J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 29th April 2009

[Seriously, people. Tonight was one of the most enjoyable episodes of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem in ages. I have a blast every week, but every so often, a truly amazing show happens and tonight was one of those. I had the pleasure of having both Filthybird and Albina Savoy live in the studio. They're both playing tomorrow night, Thursday, April 30th, at the Green Burro for this month's Dotmatrix Project show. It's DMP's one year anniversary! It was last April when the first DMP show happened and one year later, look at 'em now! The live performances by both are fantastic, as are the interviews. Can't wait to see them both tomorrow.

Now, while I can, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 29th April 2009 Show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the New York Dolls - "'Cause I Sez So" [the title track from their forthcoming album. their second since reuniting and it sounds like it could be just as good as the first. they also re-did the classic "trash" for this one. we'll probably hear that next week.]
the Clash - "Safe European Home" [from give 'em enough rope. god, i love this song. one of my favorite 'ramp up the mood' songs for the show.]
PJ Harvey and John Parish - "Black Hearted Love" [from a woman a man walked by. my mom, apparently, didn't like this song much when i played it the other week. sorry, mom.]
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "The Tenure Itch" [from their self-titled record. they'll be at local 506 in chapel hill next monday, may 4th, and you better believe i'll be there, too.]
>
Patterson Hood - "Pollyanna" [from the forthcoming album murdering oscar. this is different from hood's previous solo record, killers and stars, in that there is a full band on board here. i'm liking it so far.]
Tommy Keene - "Realize Your Mind" [from in the late bright. there are a handful of great songs on this record and this sounds like another.]
the Felice Brothers - "Penn Station" [from yonder is the clock. the felice brothers are up at the berkeley cafe in raleigh this saturday night, may 2nd. i'll be at prom, but you should go see them as they put on a rip roaring show.]
Citified - "Founded" [from absence. citified is having their EP release show on saturday, may 9th at the flat iron here in greensboro and i will be doing a DJ set for all you people to come dance. so, come dance!]

[First interview of the night was with the excellent Albina Savoy. Jon McLean, Crystal Bright and Barry Cantrell make up the band and I wish I had pictures as I doubt I've ever had a stand-up bass, accordion, saw and guitar in the studio at once. We talked about their musical origins, the meaning of community in music, where the name of the band came from and lots of other great stuff. And then there was the music. Enjoy.]

Albina Savoy - "Especially Your Mother" (live) [i let the band open by introducing themselves via song. i do so love accordion. click here to listen.]
Albina Savoy - "Too Afraid" (live) [here's where crystal picked up the saw and went at it. this was a great song. click here to listen.]
Albina Savoy - "Still Believe" (live) [another fantastic song to close the interview. click here to listen.]

Art Brut - "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes" [from art brut vs. satan. another highly amusing, ribald dash across the rock landscape with one of my favorite pithy bands.]
Lake Inferior - "Spiders" [from their self-titled EP. they will be at local 506 in chapel hill on thursday, may 7th, so a chance to check out this spectacular band in action.]

[The second interview was with another fantastic Greensboro band, Filthybird. Renee and Brian, one half of the band, joined us. They're the second act playing Thursday night. They're in the midst of recording their sophomore full length, the follow up to the excellent Southern Skies. We talked about the album, learning about recording, what community means to them and Renee played us a couple of songs and we heard another recorded one.]

Filthybird - "Portraits" (live) [renee's voice is just an amazing instrument all its own. click here to listen.]
Filthybird - "Leaving Trail" (live) [another performance preview of tomorrow night's setlist, though certainly the overall sound. click here to listen.]
Filthybird - "Mostly of Waves" [from the new compulation volume 3 compilation that pulls together a huge amount of NC artists. filthybird are on it, naturally.]

the Crocodiles - "I Wanna Kill" [from summer of hate. this album has been getting mad attention and it's certainly well focused. we'll be hearing more.]
the Smithereens - "House We Used to Live In" [from their sophomore album green thoughts. i did a post about this song over at aquarium drunkard, so go check it out.]
El Michels Affair - "C.R.E.A.M." [from enter the 37th chamber, a collection of instrumental wu-tang clan covers by el michels affair. really interesting and remarkably true to the original sound. well done, live band.]
Lyle Lovett - "Pontiac" [the title track from the album. well, with the brand name going under, i figured, why not? rest in peace, father of the firebird.]
>
the Replacements - "Swingin' Party" [by request. from tim. a nice way to go out, no doubt.]

That'll do it for this week. Thanks again to Filthybird and Albina Savoy for coming by. Also, I will be playing a set this Friday night at the Lyndon St. Art Galleries in Greensboro as part of First Fridays with the Arts. This will be a set of my acoustic music around 7pm. It's a free show and part of a set of short films and other musicians running between 6pm - 9pm this Friday evening. Stop by and say howdy. Until then, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 22nd April 2009

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight's show is jam packed with 30 songs! Always excited to pack that much into one two hour show.

Don't forget that next week, Greensboro's Filthybird will be joining us live in-studio for some chatter about next week's Dotmatrix Project show and playing some live music. We also might be joined by the opener band, Greensboro's Albina Savoy. Here's hoping.

Don't forget that I'm Twittering! Come follow along!

Now, while I can still tweet, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 22nd April 2009

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
P.O.S. - "Low Life Low Light" [from never better. i received a recommendation for the title track off this record, but didn't get it until after the show. i should check facebook more often. never thought i'd say that. so in the meantime, here's one of the best single songs i've heard this year.]
Drive-by Truckers - "Let There Be Rock" [from southern rock opera. patterson hood has a new solo record due out shortly. we'll probably be hearing some of that soon, so in the meantime, here's some classic truckers. this song is always a highlight of the live shows.]
Superchunk - "Knock Knock Knock" [from the leaves in the gutter EP which i reviewed over at aquarium drunkard. can't wait to see these guys at the merge anniversary fest this summer.]
Radiohead - "The Trickster" [from the my iron lung EP which has been included on the bonus disc of the new expanded edition of the bends. well worth picking up, even if you already own it, from what i've heard.]
>
Sonic Youth - "Sacred Trixter" [new sonic youth! from the forthcoming the eternal, their first album for matador records, due out june 9th. i say something about july in the podcast, so just ignore that. in the meantime, if you want to snag this song, go check out aquarium drunkard for the hookup.]
Filthybird - "Fightsong" [from southern skies. filthybird, as mentioned, will be live with us next week talking about their upcoming dotmatrix project show. ought to be some great stuff, so tune in.]
PJ Harvey and John Parish - "Sixteen, Fifteen, Fourteen" [from a woman a man walked by. the main criticism levelled at this record has been its scattered feeling, but i like how it feels almost like an overview of a lot of the styles harvey has channeled over the years. i think that works for it.]
Television - "Carried Away" [from 1978's adventure. this album rarely gets mentioned when talking about television's legacy, but i think it works so well as a more subdued and nuanced refinement of the sound television crafted on marquee moon. in a lot of ways, it's every bit as visionary and engaging.]
>
Art Brut - "Alcoholics Unanimous" [aw, get excited. art brut vs. satan is finally here. and it's quite good. i might be writing a review in the coming week or so, but if not, you'll hear plenty of it here. i have my qualms about art brut, but they are heavily outweighed by everything else. what a band.]
the Twilight Singers - "What Makes You Think You're the One?" [from she loves you. dulli and company's take on the fleetwood mac classic.]
Citified - "Landlocked" [from the forthcoming absence EP. the CD release show is on saturday, may 9th at the flat iron here in greensboro. yours truly will be doing a DJ set, so bring your dancing shoes.]
Warren Zevon - "Carmelita" (1974 demo) [a bonus track from the remastered edition of his self-title album. i like this version more than the eventual album track, i must say.]
>
the Thermals - "When I Was Afraid" [from now we can see. hook after hook on this album. seriously, people. this is a good, good record.]
Big Star - "September Gurls" [from radio city. another goof on my part. on the podcast i'm fairly sure i claimed this was off of #1 record. that's what you get for buying the single disc collection that pulled the two albums together. you never really quite understand a separation between the two.]
the Streets - "David Hassles" [mike skinner has been releasing new songs via twitter this past week and this was the best of the lot. you can still go grab the download over here. this song actually has some of the nuanced wit of early streets. hmm.]
Tommy Keene - "Goodbye Jane" [from in the late bright. another sharp song from this power pop legend. i'm starting to ponder a 'jane' themed song set. suggestions?]
>
the Breeders - "The Last Time" [from the new fate to fatal EP. we'll be hearing more next week, but this song. oh, my. it's the breeders fronted by mark lanegan. and yes, it's as good as it sounds. on paper. sounds better in the song.]
Pulp - "A Little Soul" [from this is hardcore. potentially one of my favorite pulp songs of all time. i have to pull it out with some regularity.]
Lake Inferior - "(I Have) Night Terrors" [from their excellent self-titled EP. the fine folks with good taste who read aquarium drunkard really latched onto the EP when i wrote about it the other week.]
Beck - "Girl Dreams" [from one foot in the grave which got a HUGE reissue this week with an expanded edition that has unearthed 16 bonus tracks, 13 of which are previously unreleased. simply put, if you're as big a fan of this album as i am, go get it.]
>
Steve Earle - "To Live is to Fly" [from the forthcoming townes, earle's tribute to the late townes van zandt. a whole album of earle covering van zandt's work. this is good and i imagine the rest is too. right up steve's alley.]
the Only Ones - "Another Girl Another Planet" [from their self-titled debut. a classic of the post-punk/new wave mess that was the late 70s/early 80s. i learned of this, naturally, through the replacements.]
the Felice Brothers - "Chicken Wire" [from yonder is the clock. this is the second week in a row i've played a felice brothers song with the word 'chicken' in the title. i think i read that this album was recorded in an old chicken shack. whether it belonged to jimmie, i don't know. j's indie/rock mayhem apologizes for the lameness of that joke.]
John Doe and the Sadies - "I Still Miss Someone" [from country club. here doe and the sadies take a good shot at this johnny cash classic.]
>
the Damnwells - "Like It Is" [from one last century, still, i believe available for download for free over at paste magazine's site. but as of my typing, i can't get paste's website to work. we'll see.]
Ryan Adams - "Firecracker" [from gold. this album always tended ot underwhelm me a bit, but this song is forever in my top five favorite adams songs list. seriously, it's just a really well written and catchy song.]
the Monks - "Monk Time" [from the new reissue of their debut album black monk time. if you head over to aquarium drunkard, you can still get your name in the drawing to win a copy of the reissues on CD and vinyl.]
Akron/Family - "River" [from the new set 'em high, set 'em free. gorgeous music. this akron/family is going places. wow, it's getting late.]
Josh Ritter - "Golden Age of Radio" (acoustic) [this is from the bonus disc of the new deluxe edition of ritter's second album, the golden age of radio. the second disc includes some b-sides from the "come and find me" single, but it also includes a complete re-recording of the album with just josh and an acoustic guitar. this is from that part of the bonus material.]
Matthew Sweet - "Devil with the Green Eyes" [from altered beast. aside from being named after (with no fact checking on this by me) one of the best games for sega genesis ever, this album really is one of sweet's overlooked masterpieces. it's the dark album, to be sure. that said, this song has been in my head for days. now it's exercised.]

That'll do it for this week. Tune in next week for my interview with Filthybird and hopefully Albina Savoy and until then, Go Panthers (in the draft!), and take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 15th April 2009

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Another jam packed night of good music ahead. So pile on, me mates.

First, a reminder of what I posted below: J's Indie/Rock is Twittering away. Just come follow me at http://twitter.com/jneas81. It'll be largely music related, but probably a lot of nonsense as well. But that's the fun of Twitter, eh?

Now, while I'm recovering from a day of watching people teabagging on television, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 15th April 2009 Show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "Seven-Mile Island" [from their self-titled album. i'll be honest. i've been pretty underwhelmed by this record. a shame considering how good a songwriter isbell can be. but this record has left me pretty cold. there are some good songs, but it really falls flat compared to his first solo record.]
the Jayhawks - "Waiting for the Sun" [from hollywood town hall. i worked up a cover of this and played it at open mic night last night. a kind of minor-key version of the classic. so i thought i'd play the original. such a great song.]
PJ Harvey and John Parish - "Pig Will Not" [from a woman a man walked by. raucous, shouty harvey at her best. i've honestly still never heard the early, pre-to bring you my love albums and i would really like to at some point. unfortunately eMusic pulled dry from download in the u.s. right before i was able to grab it.]
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - "Love Comes in Spurts" [from blank generation. has anyone ever heard the second voidoids record, destiny street? i've never took the time to track down a copy - it takes a bit of work to do so.]
>
Superchunk - "Learned to Surf" [the lead track from the new leaves in the gutter EP which i reviewed this week over at aquarium drunkard. it's a solid piece of work. and this song in particular.]
Midnight Oil - "Stars of Warburton" [from blue sky mining. when i bought my copy of this album through BMG many moons ago, i opened the case and three copies of the CD fell out. i forget, honestly, what i did with them. but this album is still quite good. i'm a sucker for midnight oil.]
P.O.S. - "Graves (We Wrote the Book)" [from never better. i need to get a hold of this album. badly.]
Foreign Exchange - "Take off the Blues" [from leave it all behind. they'll be at the cat's cradle this friday night in carborro, but also at the double door inn in charlotte on sunday night for a free show sponsored by myspace. i pick one weekend to leave town and everything happens. c'est la vie. i love this song.]
>
Lake Inferior - "How the Wars Are Won" [from their self-titled EP that i reviewed this week over at aquarium drunkard. people are responding really positively to this band. they're bound for good things if they keep this kind up with this kind of music.]
the Vaselines - "Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam" [from enter the vaselines, the new 2-disc retrospective being put out by sub pop due out in early may. all of my knowledge of this band is through nirvana's many covers, but that's about to change.]
the Decemberists - "The Hazards of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won't Wrestle the Thistles Undone)" [from the new the hazards of love. i still haven't listened to this album through yet, so bear with me, but i like this song.]
Tubeway Army - "Down in the Park" [from replicas. the last album before gary numan ditched the tubeway army moniker and became a new man. (hah! get it?) the foo fighters covered this song (really?), but my favorite cover was done by marilyn manson as a b-side to the "lunchbox" single. manson knew how to do this song justice.]
>
John Doe and the Sadies - "Night Life" [from the new country club album. a great collection of country classics done right by john doe with the sadies as his backing band. john doe's side project, X, will be at the cat's cradle on tuesday, june 9th, as part of the total request live tour, playing requests from ticket holders.]
Paul Westerberg - "Whatever Makes You Happy" [from suicaine gratifaction. i love this song. "i'm fallin' down the stairwell / callin' farewell, anyone.."]
Her Space Holiday - "The New Kid Revival" [from xoxo, panda and the new kid revival, their new LP. i like this song. we'll hear more.]
Bob Dylan - "Queen Jane Approximately" [by request. from highway 61 revisited. no lie. a dude called me from a payphone to make this request. i know because he told me and because our caller ID read "payphone." that's some dedicated request making. i actually didn't answer the first time he called because i was on voice break. then he called back from inside a lowe's home improvement store. i know that from the caller ID also. i assume lowe's is playing WQFS over the loudspeakers now?]
>
J's Indie/Rock First Times - Jason Lytle - Click to Listen [i spoke on the phone today with jason lytle, former frontman of grandaddy, about his forthcoming solo album. that interview will be up on aquarium drunkard later this week. but here jason talks about the first concert he ever went to - cheap trick! a good story about reckless youth.]
Jason Lytle - "Rollin' Home Alone" [from yours truly, the commuter. i didn't remember that this was the song i played last week. sorry for the repeat. good song, though.]
Filthybird - "Sunshine" [from southern skies. filthybird will be live in-studio on the show in two weeks in prep of their dotmatrix project show this month. also, just in time, are some videos of the band over at monkeywhale. very good stuff. go check it out.]
the Veils - "The Letter" [from sun gangs. this may be my favorite song on this album. it's going to get a good bit of play from me this year, that's for sure.]
Son Volt - "Mystifies Me" [from trace. their cover of a ron wood song. next week we'll hear the original because, well, it's quite good too. i as re-obsessed with trace earlier this week and for good reason. i've never been anything less than in love with this record since i first heard it 14 years ago. meanwhile, here's my post at aquarium drunkard comparing this cover to the original.]
>
the Felice Brothers - "Run Chicken Run" [from yonder is the clock and i'll go ahead and tell you guys to look for this record on the year-end list. it's an amazing record. and i thought their self-titled was a piece of work. this one's even better.]
Califone - "Trout Silk" [from roomsound. i was late on the califone bandwagon, but i'm really getting into them now. i like what i've heard of red red meat, too. any thoughts?]
Tommy Keene - "Hide Your Eyes" [from in the late bright. this song could be on my year-end singles list because, well, it's really, really good.]
the Thermals - "How We Fade" [from now we can see. more great music. i could run through this whole record, playing a different track each week, and be pretty satisfied. truly.]
Yo La Tengo - "Cherry Chapstick" [from my personal favorite yo la tengo album, and then nothing turned itself inside out. there's something about this song. please tell me they'll play it at the 'write the night' thing at the pitchfork festival. pleeeaasseee.]

That'll do it for this week. Don't forget to come follow me on Twitter and absorb the asinine things I tweet about. I've done it at least once while I've been sitting here typing this. Until next week, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 8th April 2009

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Had a blast with a ton of new music tonight and a bunch of classic older stuff. The year is turning up a lot of promising releases, especially this month, and the future's looking better as well. 2009 is a good year so far.

Now, before I wax nostalgic about two minutes ago, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 8th April 2009 Show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
PJ Harvey and John Parish - "Black Hearted Love" [from a woman a man walked by. their first co-headlining collaboration since 1996, though they've worked together as recently as harvey's 2007 album white chalk. the av club nailed this in calling it a pretty interesting hodge podge of harvey's sounds from over the years. i'm liking this record and i bet most fans of polly jean will as well.]
Verbena - "Six White Horses" [from the ..is the alabama boys choir EP. this EP - i don't even know if it was ever in stores. i think this was a radio promo EP that was sent out as a precursor to their final album, la musica negra. it's a shame, too, as "six white horses" rivals anything on any of their albums. it's a masterful rock song that is verbena at its very essence.]
P.O.S. - "Low Light Low Life" [from never better. i'm really into this song. right now i could see it easily hanging around for the year-end best singles show. now we need to hear more of the album. viva minneapolis hip-hop!]
Public Image Ltd. - "This is Not a Love Song" [by request. from this is what you want..this is what you get! am i imagining things, or have i heard a version of this without horns somewhere before? i feel like this version was a bit weak compared to others i've heard.]
>
the Thermals - "Now We Can See" [the title track from their latest. get ready because you're going to be hearing a lot of this record in the coming weeks. seriously catchy, seriously rockin', seriously good.]
Liz Phair - "Big Tall Man" [from whitechocolatespaceegg. anyone hear anything else about her forthcoming album? the one where she apparently atones for her last two records? she's got another good album in her. they were all quality until she decided to make a grab for the brass ring.]
Lake Inferior - "Spiders" [from their self-titled EP. i want these guys to come play in greensboro so i can see them. hey, guys, if you're reading - let's get you down here!]
the Twilight Singers - "Bonnie Brae" [from powder burns. afghan whigs last week, twilight singers this week. maybe greg dulli solo next?[
>
Tommy Keene - "A Secret Life of Stories" [from in the late bright. more power-pop goodness from one of its finest practitioners. i want to hear this whole record.]
Whiskeytown - "Nervous Breakdown" [from rural free delivery. aquarium drunkard did a post about this in comparison to the black flag original the other week. a fun revamp of a classic keith morris-era black flag song.]
Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 - "Goodnight Oslo" [the title track from his latest. he's playing right now up a the cat's cradle in carborro. a good show, i don't doubt.]
the Wedding Present - "This Boy Can Wait (A Bit Longer!)" [from the famous NME C86 compilation. there will be a post up on aquarium drunkard about this very soon. keep looking.]
>
Superchunk - "Knock Knock Knock" [from leaves in the gutter their first new release since 2001. i'm really liking the songs on this EP a lot. meanwhile, go read my thoughts about their 1994 classic, foolish.]
the Delta Spirit - "Trashcan" [from ode to sunshine. the j's indie/rock # 1 single of 2008. awesome stuff.]
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "Come Saturday" [from their self-titled LP. speaking of C86 and its disciples, this band is the main reason people have been talking C86 this year. seriously good. they'll be at local 506 in chapel hill on monday, may 4th.]
Destroyer - "European Oils" [from destroyer's rubies. its the wicked guitar solo that bursts out of nowhere on this song that always got me. there's a reason this was my # 1 album of 2006.]
>
Akron/Family - "Everyone is Guilty" [from the forthcoming set 'em wild set 'em free which is due out may 5th. these guys were one of the most challenging and engaging shows at the monolith festival last fall. see them live. please.]
Nicolai Dunger - "Something New" [from soul rush. i was going to play something off of his tranquil isolation album since we'd talked about it this week over at drunkard. but of course our copy was missing. curses. not loud, but deep.]
the Veils - "Sit Down by the Fire" [from sun gangs which came out yesterday. note to veils: come back to north carolina. at least so elizabeth can actually see you this time.]
the Church - "Metropolis" [from gold afternoon fix. i know someone out there tonight heard that opening mandolin line and said, "yes! he's playing 'metropolis!'" i just know it.]
>
Jason Lytle - "Rollin' Home Alone" [from his forthcoming debut solo album, yours truly, the commuter. jason is the former frontman of grandaddy. i know a lot of people are happy to see him back. i'm doing a phone interview with him next week. stay tuned for details about that.]
the Shop Assistants - "It's Up to You" [probably my favorite song from the C86 compilation and by a band that put out one album and then was off into the ether. seriously gorgeous stuff, but god, it reminds me of the beginning of smashing pumpkins' "mayonaise." this song predates the pumpkins' song, naturally.]
the Odds - "Cloud Full of Rocks" [from cheerleader. more canadian power-pop goodness.]
the Seahorses - "Love is the Law" [from do it yourself. excessive? absolutely. really awesome? strangely, yes. have to love the post-megagroup projects of the other members of the band beside the lead singer.]
Justin Townes Earle - "Midnight at the Movies" [the title track from his latest solo album. i like this song a lot, even if the sticky sweetness of this is a bit cloying. nanci griffith can sing about love at the five and dime 'cos she's old enough. i'm older than earle and i think that makes some of the lines ring a bit false. but it's a good song.]

That'll do it for this week. Back next week with some more new music (I already have some - can anyone say the new Felice Brothers?) and more classic goodness. And thankfully, most of you will say, for the last time this year I get to say - GO HEELS! NATIONAL CHAMPS! Until next time, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 1st April 2009

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Sorry for the delay in posting this week as a whole set of things colluded to prevent it from happening in a timely manner. That said, it was an awesome show that I definitely think you'll enjoy. In fact, let's get to it. Onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 1st April 2009 Show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the Veils - "Killed by the Boom" [from the forthcoming sun gangs which is due out next week, i believe. it's taking me a bit, but this record is growing on me. it's not quite as immediate as the stellar nux vomica, but it's good.]
Drive-by Truckers - "(Something's Got To) Give Pretty Soon" [from decoration day. one of the drawbacks to being a radio dj is that you really begin to perceive music from the perspective of singles. would it make a good radio song? you sometimes forget the hidden gems on albums that aren't always as immediate - this song is pretty single-ready, but it's not one of this album's more widely revered songs, so it sometimes slips past me. thankfully, this week, i remembered.]
the Odds - "Getting My Attention" [from cheerleader, the first new odds album in thirteen years. it sounds like they never left. do you like your power-pop canadian? well, look no further.]
The The - "Dogs of Lust" [from dusk. this song got lodged in my head the other day and begged for play this week. so i did. the video was a bit of an MTV hit back in the day. we've come a long, weird way since then. not really for the best.]
>
Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 - "Hurry for the Sky" [from goodnight oslo, hitchcock's latest. they're going to be playing at the cat's cradle in carborro next wednesday night, april 8th, so why not go celebrate the impending tar heels' national championship with some robyn hitchcock?]
Hot Snakes - "This Mystic Decade" [from audit in progress, the band's final studio album. there's something really sinister and awesome about this song. it's long been a favorite of mine, largely based on first hearing it on their peel sessions EP.]
Liz Durrett - "Wild As Them" [from out side our gates. i've become rather interested in this record. it's really growing on me, though i'm not sure why just yet. durrett is a solid songwriter.]
the Afghan Whigs - "Fountain and Fairfax" [from gentlemen. my favorite whigs song of all time (which is no simple choice, mind you), it's one of the most cathartic and foaming songs i've ever heard. i would probably put this album in my top ten records of the 90s. but that's just me.]
>
Superchunk - "Misfits and Mistakes" [from the forthcoming leaves in the gutter EP, superchunk's first new music in seven and a half years. there's a tentative agreement with the folks at merge for us at aquarium drunkard to do a series of interviews with merge artists this spring as a lead-up to the big merge 20th anniversary party this summer. stay tuned for details as they actually solidify.]
Talking Heads - "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" [from remain in light. ridiculously infectious music. one of the truly unique bands in popular music, then, now and always.]
Katy Mae - "Falls Down" [from you may already be a winner. i had a blast with these guys on the show a couple of months ago and i really enjoy their music. good roots rock from brooklyn.]
Michael Penn - "Try" [from resigned. the video for this song was the first i ever heard of michael penn and revisiting it now really does show off the penchant for classic hollywood motifs that penn has used off and on in his lyrics over the years. this is still one of my favorite songs of his.]

Bob Dylan - "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'" [from the forthcoming together through life which is out later this month. if this first single is to be believed, i think we're in for something good. i was a bit underwhelmed by modern times, even though it was a good record. it lacked the heft of either of its two immediate predecessors. here's hoping this one comes out swingin'.]
Wire - "Map Ref. 41°N 93°W" [from 154, an album i will be revisiting soon on aquarium drunkard. i've admittedly been away from wire for a good while. after my initial discovery of their first three albums' goodness, i took off except for occasional plays of single songs. but while working recently, i slid 154 in and was amazed at it all over again. the end trajectory of wire's initial run of albums, it's certainly one of the true classics of post-punk.]
the Damnwells - "55 Pictures" [from the excellent new one last century. go download it for free from the paste magazine website. great power-pop.]
Iron and Wine - "Freedom Hangs Like Heaven" [from the woman king EP. this is the release that made me sit back up and re-pay attention to iron and wine. i had heard their debut and then completely slept on our endless numbered days. this, however, was like a needed slap to the face. it's still among my favorite of the band's output.]
the Buzzcocks - "Ever Fallen in Love?" [by request. from singles going steady. the guy who called and requested this called back while i was playing it to request more. i don't think he knows we have caller ID. he called back again later. this is the only request he got.]

Justin Townes Earle - "Can't Hardly Wait" [from midnight at the movies. i think i missed this album when it came out originally, but i downloaded it this week and was surprised to find this sturdy little replacements cover tucked within its folds. and inspired, as all good things do, a theme set.]
Blair - "Androgynous" [one of my favorite newer artists and her cover of the 'mats classic originally from let it be. i forget, however, where her version of this is from or available through. i'll remedy that.]
the Replacements - "Left of the Dial" [from tim. sigh. does this song ever get not amazing? the answer is no. never not amazing.]
Tommy Womack - "The Replacements" [from circus town. an over eight minute ode to the greatest and worst band in the world depending on when you saw them. tommy lays out his own experiences with seeing the band live, including witnessing one of the revelatory 'greatest band on earth' nights. "i had to look twice to make sure it was the same guys...like pupa to butterfly, like saul to paul, like cougar to mellancamp.."]

Tommy Keene - "Hide Your Eyes" [from the new in the late bright. tommy is one of america's overlooked power-pop masters and if this song is anything to judge by, this new record really could be one of his best. we'll be hearing more.]
the New Pornographers - "Sing Me Spanish Techno" [from twin cinema. as if i didn't play this song often enough when this album came out originally. but here it is again, in all its glory.]
Wilco - "I'm Always In Love" [from summerteeth, another album i've been re-discovering lately. when i first heard this album, i recoiled a bit from it as i had been (and still continue to be, to some extent) lost in the majesty of being there and this album was such a shift from that album's perfection of roots-rock. it was a turning point for the band - one that allowed things like yankee hotel foxtrot and even the recent sky blue sky to happen, even if they were off in their own worlds as well.]
the Vaselines - "Son of a Gun" [from the way of the vaselines. although they will be coming nowhere near here (natch), the vaselines will be touring north america later this spring. pitchfork has the details and for those of you who can catch them, i'd say do so.]
Yo La Tengo - "Deeper Into Movies" [from i can hear the heart beating as one. i need to do some digging back into their catalogue as well in prep for hopefully seeing them this summer at the pitchfork festival. i listened to this song while prepping a mix cd the other week and it found its way in this week.]

That'll do it for this week. More new stuff coming your way next week. One of the benefits of waiting this long is to be able to celebrate the Heels' victory over Villanova. Onward to Monday night! Until next time, Go Heels!, and take care.
