J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 28th July 2010

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. A bold plethora of new music tonight, so I hope you enjoy the show. I got a really nice email about last week's show just saying that they enjoyed the summer rock goodness. I'm glad the shows are coming across that way - the weather is certainly an inspiration right now.

I occasionally get up here in the main mast of the post and encourage you to go see a show and this is one of those times. This Friday, July 30th, at Snug Harbor in Charlotte, Athens, Georgia's Futurebirds are playing. You've heard me play them quite a bit on the show of late and having seen them a couple of times live, I really can't recommend this show enough. Make an evening of it, go down and enjoy the great Plaza Midwood area of Charlotte and take in a great show of rock and roll. And say hi to me!

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 28th July 2010 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the Joy Formidable - "Austere" [from their a balloon called moaning. this record actually got its UK release last year and i think i might have played something off of it on the show last year as well. it got its US release earlier this year and here we go. good caustic rock and roll. no better way to open the show.]
Jim White - "Handcuffed to a Fence in Mississippi" [from no such place. i know he only put out a new record a year or so ago, but i keep jonesin' for new jim white music. or at least for him to tour through here again. been too long since i've seen him live.]
Frightened Rabbit - "Swim Until You Can't See Land" [from the winter of mixed drinks. i know i keep cycling back and forth between two songs from this record for singles, but the record is a low key one and these two are among its highest points energy wise.]
the New York Dolls - "Looking for a Kiss" [aw, i haven't played anything off of their self-titled record in awhile. next week it'll probably be something off of too much, too soon. hey, chatterbox.]
>
the Roots - "The Fire" [from the new how i got over. this track features a great chorus sung by john legend and the video for this song is pretty amazing in its own right. check it out.]
Julie Ocean - "My Revenge" [from long gone and nearly there. sadly, their only album. this band created such a perfect blast of power pop, it was really sad to see them wrap it up so quickly. but maybe that's completely appropriate also.]
Delta Spirit - "911" [from history from below. bound for my end of the year list. i'm digging this album a lot.]
the Stone Roses - "Love Spreads" [from second coming. it could be because this was the first stone roses album i ever heard and that i wouldn't hear the first one for some time after, but i am a great defender of this album. and i'll put this song up against just about anything on the debut. it's seriously that good.]
>
Menomena - "TAOS" [from the new mines. glad to hear this band back finally and check out the review at aquarium drunkard where you can download this song. haven't heard the rest of the album yet, but really want to.]
the Cure - "In Between Days" [from the head on the door. i love this song, but you should definitely check out superchunk's cover of it for the a.v. club undercover series. they knock it out of the park. i hope they start playing it live.]
J. Tillman - "Three Sisters" [from singing ax. tillman is one of the main songwriters behind fleet foxes and he's been more busy with his solo work in the past years, it seems, than he has with fleet foxes. his stuff is right gorgeous.]
Superchunk - "Beat My Guest" [from cup of sand. while we're talking about superchunk doing covers, here's their awesome version of the adam and the ants classic.]
>
Stornoway - "Zorbing" [from beachcomber's windowsill which i can't get enough of. seriously. what a great, great album.]
Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets - "DLMG" [from snake river canyon. saw the new, upgraded version of the band last saturday over at the werehouse with their new pedal steel player. just a dynamite set and if you get a chance to see caleb and co. live, do it.]
Casual Curious - "Body & Air" [from their new self-titled record. saw these guys open for lake inferior last thursday and what a great night of music that was. enjoying their new album.]
Paul Westerberg - "33rd of July" [a bonus track from the japanese version of suicaine gratifaction. i've always really enjoyed this song - most of all because the 33rd of july (august 2nd, i guess) is my parents' wedding anniversary. also the anniversary of the date the constitution was actually signed by the continental congress in 1787. just sayin'.]
>
Futurebirds - "Johnny Utah" [from the excellent hampton's lullabye which finally dropped this week on autumn tone records. you can read the review over at aquarium drunkard. they're playing this friday at snug harbor in charlotte. i'll be there. you should be, too.]
Jens Lekman - "The Opposite of Hallelujah" [from night falls over kortedala, one of my favorite records of 2007. i saw on pitchfork that he dropped a new track today. it's about time, jens. jeez.]
the Rosebuds - "Stayin' Alive" [yeah, that's right. a bee gees cover. and it's brilliant. one of two new songs the rosebuds put up for download over at the hopscotch music festival sight as a promo for what is undoubtedly going to be the best musical experience in north carolina this year.]
Afghan Whigs - "John the Baptist" [from 1965. only greg dulli could get away with titling a song this and going on to sing about what he does. love that man. he's going on solo tour this fall, sadly no north carolina dates. see him if you can.]
>
Twin Sister - "Lady Daydream" [from the color your life EP. i can't tell you how amazing i thought this band was when i saw them up in chicago the other week. i'm really entranced. we're going to hear a lot more.]
Oakley Hall - "Rue the Blues" [from i'll follow you. here's another band that needs a new album out, post-haste. love these guys.]
Conrad Plymouth - "Metamora" [from their self-titled EP which is going to be out on vinyl on the new label run by muzzle of bees. this EP is gorgeous and very, very worth picking up.]
Hum - "I'd Like Your Hair Long" [from you'd prefer an astronaut. i did a piece on the big single from this album, "stars," over at aquarium drunkard including a partial interview with album producer keith cleversley. it's a good read, i think.]
Ryan Adams - "Revelator" [from the sessions that would eventually begat heartbreaker, this is adams, backed by gillian welch and david rawlings, going through gillian's classic title track from her own album time (the revelator). love this version, too. go grab it over at aquarium drunkard.]

That'll do it for this week. Until next week, I'll see you at Snug Harbor this Friday night for Futurebirds and then again next time on the show. Take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 21st July 2010

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I had a blast in Chicago at the Pitchfork Music Festival this past week. Saw some amazing shows and a few mediocre ones, but on the whole, it is, quite possibly, the best music festival going in the States right now. Priced low, lots of variety of music, a great environment and just good things all in all. Can't wait to go back next year.

Now, while I'm still enthused, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 21st July 2010 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the Henry Clay People - "Glory" [from the l'aventure tribute album to television's adventure - a free download over at aquarium drunkard, though we're encouraging people to throw some money to the silver lake conservatory of music, a noble cause for some free music, don't you think? plus, people covering one of the masterpieces of television's brief career.]
PJ Harvey - "C'Mon Billy" [from to bring you my love. this album was my first exposure to ms. harvey and quite an exposure it was. i need to revisit her white chalk record sometime soon.]
Frightened Rabbit - "Nothing Like You" [from the winter of mixed drinks. i keep saying this, but it truly is one of my favorite songs of this year, without question. so good.]
the Vaselines - "Molly's Lips" [from enter the vaselines. they'll be putting out their first new album in like, i don't know. a bajillion years this fall. and they'll be on tour! coming to the cat's cradle on monday, october 11th. but they are also playing a show in D.C. at the 9:30 club on saturday, october 2nd with teenage fanclub!]
>
Teenage Fanclub - "Baby Lee" [from shadows. sadly they aren't coming to north carolina (what's up, merge? what's the deal?) for this tour, but they will be at the aforementioned D.C. show with the vaselines, so there's some goodness in the world.]
Ryan Adams - "Firecracker" [from gold. one of the handful of redeeming values of this album. but, hey, this album's nowhere near as bad as his last two. just saying.]
Delta Spirit - "Golden State" [from history from below. hate that i didn't have time to catch these guys while they were in town, but i'm still loving this album.]
Bear in Heaven - "You Do You" [from beast rest forth mouth. saw these guys twice while i was in chicago this past week and it was amazing both times. a truly stellar live act.]
>
Wavves - "Post Acid" [from the new king of the beach album. wavves is one of the bands that falls into this neo-garage genre that i haven't been sold on quite as much, but this is a really good song. we'll see how i feel about the rest of it.]
Pere Ubu - "Caligari's Mirror" [from dub housing. seriously one of the best post-punk albums ever made. and that's a pretty long list all in all.]
Blonde Redhead - "Here Sometimes" [from the forthcoming penny sparkle. they're going to be playing at the cat's cradle in carborro, north carolina on saturday, october 30th, so another chance to catch this great band.]
Luna - "Sideshow by the Seashore" [from penthouse. on the show i called this one of the best records of the 90s and i say that without any reservation. truly gorgeous.]
>
the Roots - "Radio Daze" [from how i got over. this is going to be one of the albums up for discussion at record club on sunday. this was my pick. just saying. it's awesome.]
the Lover Speaks - "No More 'I Love You's'" [from their self-titled 1986 album. while i take issue with the punctuation of the song's title, this is the original version. i will admit, my ignorance had me thinking this was an annie lennox original. but i was lead to think about it today after hearing the new nicki minaj song that samples the lennox version and when doing research, i found out it was a cover. so i sought out the original and there you go. that's how a day in my mind works.]
Stornoway - "The Coldharbour Road" [from beachcomber's windowsill, their forthcoming album here in the states. amazing, amazing stuff and i can't get enough of it really.]
Big Star - "Way Out West" (live) [from big star live. one of the handful of songs that andy hummel wrote for the band. andy passed away this past monday at the age of 59. he had been fighting cancer for a couple of years, but it still hits hard following the death of alex chilton back in march. this leaves jody stephens as the only founding member of the band still with us. you can check out my interview with stephens from last fall over at aquarium drunkard.]
>
Megafaun - "Heretofore" [the title track from their forthcoming EP out in september. this band can do no wrong in my ears. they just get better and better.]
Pixies - "Dig For Fire" [from bossanova. always one of my favorite pixies singles and a traditional song to pull out every now and then on the show.]
Black Mountain - "Old Fangs" [from their forthcoming album wilderness heart. so excited to hear they have a new one coming. i love that they and the black angels tend to release albums in the same year. good timing.]
Lake Inferior - "How the Wars Are Won" [from their self-titled EP. they'll be playing tomorrow night, thursday, july 22nd at the nightlight in chapel hill. oh, i will be there.]
>
Futurebirds - "Yur Not Dead" [from the excellent hampton's lullabye which will be out soon. they'll be at snug harbor in charlotte next friday, july 30th. i'll be there as well. definitely.]
Pavement - "Range Life" [from crooked rain, crooked rain. one of the absolute highlights of their set at the pitchfork festival this weekend. i was entranced the entire time.]
Girls - "Lust for Life" [from their album. another highlight performer from the pitchfork festival. truly excellent show.]
Son Volt - "No Turning Back" [by request from twitter. the other week i had a request for some son volt from american central dust, so here you go. lyrically one of my favorites from the album.]
>
the Love Language - "Brittany's Back" [from libraries. one of my favorite songs from the new album. did anyone go catch their CD release show at the cradle last saturday?]
Guided By Voices - "Tractor Rape Chain" [from bee thousand. so, GBV reunion tour dates were announced one day, went on sale the next, and now the chapel hill show is sold out. thankfully i grabbed a pair.]
the Shop Assistants - "Train From Kansas City" [from anthology: 1985-1986. didn't superchunk also cover this song on their throwing seeds collection? ]
Tom Waits - "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" [from bone machine. just felt appropriate for some reason. can never get enough of the tom.]

That'll do it for this week. Until next week, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 14th July 2010

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I'm heading to the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this weekend and this show has a bevy of some of the acts I'm most looking forward to catching. While I'm at the festival I'll be live Tweeting performances and posting daily recaps at Aquarium Drunkard so make sure you stay up to date and get in on what's going on. If you're at the fest, say hi!

Now, while the going's good, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 14th July 2010

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Decoration Ghost - "Repay the Spark" [from the haze of wine and age. this band tore it up last saturday at legitimate business here in greensboro and this was the barnstorming set closer. great greensboro rock.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Summerlong" [from back to me. it's a classic summer jam and quite possibly my favorite edwards song. sigh. so good.]
M.I.A. - "Born Free" [from her new album maya. the song samples suicide's "ghost rider" so it's appropriate that sucide's martin rev would appear to help play the song live on letterman. killer.]
Tubeway Army - "Me! I Disconnect From You" [from replicas. an acquaintance of mine (whom i'll mention later) lead me to this advertisement using numan's "cars" to great effect. awesome commercial.]
>
the Love Language - "This Blood is Our Own" [from libraries. excellent new album that you can read my review of over at aquarium drunkard. they're playing their album release show this saturday, july 17th, at the cat's cradle in carborro.]
El-P - "Drive" [from i'll sleep when you're dead. one of the artists i'm most looking forward to seeing at the pitchfork music festival this weekend. when i saw this guy live back in 2007, it was a beast of a show.]
Free Energy - "Dream City" [from stuck on nothing. this is out on DFA records and is being hyped as DFA’s first true “rock band” release or some such. either way, it’s good.]
Bear in Heaven - "Lovesick Teenagers" [from beast rest forth mouth. another of the pitchfork bands i'm dying to see.]
>
the Mynabirds - "Let the Record Go" [by request. from what we lost in the fire we gained in the flood. this album is a year-end best-of without question.]
Jews and Catholics - "Thank God I Don't Live In Your Eyes" [from who are? we think we are! great winston-salem, north carolina rock and roll. it was eddie from j&c that tipped me off to that gary numan commercial. awesome.]
Local Natives - "Shape Shifter" [from gorilla manor. another pitchfork band for me to finally see. woo!]
Superchunk - "Rainy Streets" [from here's to shutting up, their most recent new full length LP from 2001. that is until majesty shredding drops this fall! yay for new superchunk!]
>
Best Coast - "Boyfriend" [from crazy for you. i can't get over this song. i can't wait to see them do it live this weekend at pitchfork so i can exorcise it. check out aquarium drunkard’s review.]
the Beastie Boys - "Hey Ladies" [from paul's boutique. there was a beasties question at trivia last night, so i thought i'd throw on a classic.]
Beach House - "Used to Be" [from teen dream. another pitchfork band. sorry for the short descriptions on these bands, but hey, this is the purpose of this week's show.]
Track a Tiger - "Glad to Be Scattered" [from woke up early the day i died. a band from chicago that i wish was playing at pitchfork. love this band.]
>
Titus Andronicus - "A More Perfect Union" [from the monitor. another pitchfork band i'm excited to see live.]
Tommy Keene - "Long Time Missing" [from isolation party from 1998. a long time member of the power pop community in the united states. great stuff.]
Megafaun - "Volunteers" [from the excellent new heretofore EP. get it if you haven't. seriously.]
Pavement - "Grounded" [from wowee zowee. this is THE band i'm most excited to see at pitchfork. i never saw the band when they were originally together, so this is going to be awesome.]
>
Futurebirds - "APO" [from the forthcoming hampton's lullaby which is super, super good. they're playing on friday, july 30th at snug harbor in charlotte.]
Dwight Yoakam - "I Played Dixie" (1981 demo) [from guitars, cadillacs, etc. etc. deluxe edition. by the time dwight put this on a proper album, he'd removed the snippet of "dixie" guitar line that i think adds so much to the song here. a shame, but glad this demo exists.]
Stornoway - "The End of the Movie" [from beachcomber's windowsill. one of my favorite records of this year, without question.]
Wilco - "Via Chicago" [from summerteeth. felt it important to throw on this song since i'll be going home via chicago. sort of. i mean, i'm leaving home, to go to chicago, to come back home. so, yeah.]
Ben Gibbard/Jay Farrar - "These Roads Don't Move" [by request. from one fast move and i'm gone. i didn't give this much of a fair listen when it came out, but this song is pretty nice.]
>
the National - "England" [from high violet. really dig this song and it will probably end up on my year-end singles list. this album is a slow grower for me. i haven't been in the right somber mood.]
Randy Newman - "Marie" [from good ol' boys. one of my favorite randy newman songs and, really, the first one i consciously heard by him. i'd heard stuff before, but hadn't paid him any mind. when i heard this, i knew i'd been mistaken.]

That'll do it for this week. Don't for get to follow me on Twitter while I'm at the Pitchfork Music Festival and check for daily recaps of the fest at Aquarium Drunkard. Until next week, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 7th July 2010

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I'm really excited about this week's show - some great pairings, some great new stuff, some great requests. Next week's show ought to be a humdinger also as I do a large chunk of preview stuff for the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. I'll be traveling to the fest again this year to cover it for Aquarium Drunkard and you can follow me on Twitter while I'm there and also see daily updates over at AD. More about that next week.

A reminder that WQFS is now, finally, streaming live on the web. So, if you're outside of the area and want to catch all the goodness WQFS has to offer, then go check it out. I have my own personal favorite shows, but all are worth listening to if you haven't before.

Now, since we've survived when the sevens clash, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 7th July 2010

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Teenage Fanclub - "When I Still Have Thee" [from shadows. this is probably my favorite song on the new album - it's wistful and harmonious and gorgeous.]
Michael Penn - "Try" [from resigned. i'd love to hear some new michael penn music, even though i was a touch underwhelmed by his last record. but he's hit far more often than missed, so i still await more.]
Arcade Fire - "The Suburbs" [the title track from their forthcoming album. this song is growing on me. i wasn't quite sure what to make of it at first - and admittedly i'm still really curious as to what the whole album is going to sound like - but i'm liking it more and more.]
Neutral Milk Hotel - "Holland 1945" [from in the aeroplane over the sea. i've shied away, i think, from playing things from this record in the past number of years. in a way it's such a well known (and yet, unknown) album that it just seemed well worn. but that doesn't keep it from being amazing.]
>
Megafaun - "Carolina Days" [from the new heretofore EP. this release is amazing. i'm just constantly overwhelmed by this band.]
Egyptian Lover - "I Cry (Night After Night)" [from on the nile. i'll be forever in debt to my friend jay for introducing me to this guy. "like prince meets kraftwerk" indeed.]
Burnt Ones - "Sunset Hill" [from the forthcoming album black teeth, golden tongues which is being released on the roaring colonel record label run by the founder of my old kentucky blog. good stuff and we'll be hearing more.]
the Tragically Hip - "Fireworks" [from phantom power. for sara, who mentioned it on twitter earlier this week, and as a late ode to the 4th of july. one of my favorite hip songs.]
>
the Love Language - "Wilmont" [from libraries. lead singer stu mclamb told me that he felt this song was his attempt to create something like beach house and i can hear what he means. still, it's very much the love language. this record is so solid it hurts.]
Yo La Tengo - "Tom Courtenay" [from electr-o-pura. this song got stuck in my head earlier this week and simply would not leave. i'd never seen the video before, so i found it on you tube and man, it's awesome.]
the National - "Afraid of Everyone" [from their latest, high violet. this went out as a birthday dedication for danielle, but afterwards i thought of what a dreary birthday song it was. so..]
Lou Reed - "Andy's Chest" [from transformer. this is a little better. enjoy a song about andy warhol's chest.]
>
John Grant - "Sigourney Weaver" [from queen of denmark. john grant is the former lead man of the czars and here, backed by midlake, he releases his first solo record. this song is full of some mildly silly lyrics played dead straight. interesting stuff and we'll hear more.]
the Streets - "Sharp Darts" [from original pirate material. one of my favorite short songs to pull out and play every now and again.]
Futurebirds - "Ski Chalet" [from hampton's lullaby. both times i've seen futurebirds recently they used this song to excellent effect as a closer for the show. it's a totally awesome song live and here in this version from their forthcoming album.]
Supergrass - "St. Petersburg" [from road to rouen. i was bummed to hear that the band called it quits earlier this year, but they left us with quite a bit of amazing music. this song, for instance, from a gorgeous album.]
>
Stornoway - "Watching Birds" [from beachcomber's windowsill. i probably won't stop until i've played every song on this record over the coming weeks. you wait and see.]
the Stone Roses - "Sally Cinnamon" [from the sally cinnamon single. one of the absolute best stone roses songs that was never on a proper album.]
Avi Buffalo - "Remember Last Time" [by request from their self-titled album. a great, long, loping affair with some great guitar work.]
Wild Nothing - "Rabbit Feet" [from gemini. this is all i've heard so far, but i've been told the rest of this record is excellent as well. we'll be hearing more.]
>
Johnny Dowd - "Yolanda" [from his latest, wake up the snakes. dowd is a master of gothic murder ballads and dark country, so this is just par for the course from this excellent writer.]
Tyrone Davis - "I Keep Coming Back" [from turn back the hands of time. a classic soul song from one of chicago's finest.]
Best Coast - "When I'm With You" [the title track from their 2009 single. by request. this band can really do no wrong and they just seem to be getting better.]
Afghan Whigs - "I Keep Coming Back" [from gentlemen. their cover of the tyrone davis song. so, so dulli-esque. it's perfect.]
>
Decoration Ghost - "Camera Bag and a Back Pack" [from the haze of wine and age. they'll be playing this saturday, along with midtown dickens and filthybird, at legitimate business here in greensboro. show starts at 7pm.]
the Hold Steady - "Hurricane J" [from heaven is whenever. i don't know what it is about the storm metaphors this year, but they keep coming in really well-written ways. this was the first i heard and still one of the best.]
Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets - "Heat Lightnin' Heat" [from snake river canyon. one of my favorite songs from the new album.]
Prince and the Revolution - "Computer Blue" [from purple rain. since prince announced this week that the internet is over, i thought this song would be fitting.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next week with more great music. Until then, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 30th June 2010

[Welcome to a, seriously, fantastic week of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight's show is jam packed full of great new stuff, classic older stuff and not one, but two sets of thematically linked songs. It was a great week, to say the least.

After nearly eleven years of hearing about it, WQFS has begun webcasting. I got the official email over this past weekend, and I couldn't be happier. So, those of you outside of our broadcast area can finally listen to the show live and even interact live! Just head on over to our streaming page and get it going and listen in to all our great shows, not just mine! I look forward to hearing more from you. This might cause me to relax a bit and actually push the upload of the podcast back to Thursday nights rather than Wednesday, but we'll see.

And speaking of the podcast, I had a bit of technical trouble with the recording machine, so the theme song, introduction and the first part of the Frightened Rabbit's song is missing from the podcast. Terribly sorry about that.

Now, while it's still great, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 30th June 2010

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Frightened Rabbit - "Swim Until You Can't See Land" [from their latest, the winter of mixed drinks. the band stopped by the AV club studios to record a cover for their undercover series. the band did the lemonheads' "confetti" and it's gorgeous.]
R.E.M. - "Drive" [from automatic for the people. if you follow me on twitter, then you saw when i visited this album's namesake in athens, georgia this weekend. very exciting.]
the Henry Clay People - "End of an Empire" [from somewhere on the golden coast, their second full length. we've heard a live version of this song on the show for the past year, but finally the finished album version. great rock and roll.]
Pulp - "Party Hard" [from this is hardcore. i pretty much have felt this was my favorite pulp album from the moment i bought it well over a decade ago. it's such a tremendous album - so dark and delving and ultimately greater than its parts.]
>
the Thermals - "I Don't Believe You" [from the forthcoming personal life which will be out in september. i'm intrigued by the past few years and the tendency for bands and labels to officially leak singles months before an album's release. i guess it keeps an interest in the band going during the downtime, but why not go back to releasing between album singles that aren't album tracks like back in the day? awesome song, though.]
XTC - "Dear God" [from skylarking. a little run of heathenistic songs in this set, all with varying takes on things. this song is a vitriolic declaration of non belief.]
the Roots - "Dear God 2.0" (feat. Monsters of Folk) [from their new album how i got over. this song immediately, title wise, made me think of the XTC song, so i obviously paired them up. this song is more of a sorrowful expression of doubt.]
Meat Puppets - "Lake of Fire" [from II. this is just a blast of noise about people burning in hell. so, you know, take your pick of the three.]
>
Deadly Syndrome - "Carried Away" [from the aquarium drunkard tribute album to television's 1978 album adventure. the album, l'aventure, is available for download for free at the website, though they encourage people to donate money to the silverlake conservatory of music. it's a great fundraiser and a great covers album of a classic album. last week i played the first half of the album, so this week we got the second.]
Imaad Wasif with Lykke Li - "The Fire" [another great cover from the l'aventure album.]
Dirt Dress - "Ain't That Nothin'" [from l'aventure.]
Growler - "The Dream's Dream" [from l'aventure.]
>
Megafaun - "Heretofore" [the title track from their new EP. do these guys slow down? after putting out the awesome gather, form and fly last year and touring the hell out of it, now a new EP. and this song and the EP are gorgeous.]
the Replacements - "Sixteen Blue" [from let it be. i've been on a replacements kick of late. probably aggravated by the paul westerbot on twitter.]
Oasis - "Falling Down" [originally from 2008's dig out your soul. i'll be honest, aside from the "lyla" single from their 2005 album, i haven't paid much attention to oasis post-be here now, but this song is fantastic and i may have to revisit their more recent albums in light of their breakup.]
the Delays - "Hey Girl" [from 2003's faded seaside glamour. i remember mad dog raving about this album and its singles and for every right reason. this music is just perfection pop.]
>
Best Coast - "Boyfriend" [from their forthcoming debut LP crazy for you. you can grab this track for free over at pitchfork and you should because it's amazing. no joke.]
Drive-by Truckers - "Birthday Boy" [from the big to-do. the beginning of a run of songs about strippers. why not, right?]
Kathleen Edwards - "Money Talks" (live) [from the out-of-print live at the bowery. a cover of the ac/dc classic. and what else did ac/dc ever sing about except strippers?]
Five Eight - "She's Dropping the Bomb" [from i learned shut up, their debut album. saw this classic band playing down in athens this past weekend and man, they're still as fierce as ever.]
>
Stornoway - "I Saw You Blink" [from the forthcoming beachcomber's windowsill. this album is simply gorgeous and it will, without question, be on the end-of-year list for best albums. more to come.]
Nanci Griffith - "These Days in an Open Book" [from flyer. i haven't listened to nanci in awhile, but i stuck one of my older cassettes into the car this weekend and forgot what a great singer she is. so, one of my favorite, poppier songs of hers.]
Delta Spirit - "Bushwick Blues" [from the excellent new history from below. they'll be at the cat's cradle next monday, july 5th. i probably will be too.]
Teenage Fanclub - "Sweet Days Waiting" [from shadows. one of the more sweet, softer songs on the new album and one of its most gorgeous as well.]
>
Avi Buffalo - "Summer Cum" [from their self-titled album. had a request for some of this stuff, but a different song. we'll get to that request next week, but in the meantime, here's another awesome track from this record.]
Bob Dylan - "She Belongs to Me" [from bringing it all back home. this is one of my all-time favorite dylan songs and it never ceases to make me sing along.]
PJ Harvey - "Rid of Me" [the title track from her 1993 album. a mildly low-key way to close out the night, but then the song ramps up toward the end. great stuff.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next Wednesday with more great stuff. Until then, take care.
