J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 29th September 2010


Update: The podcast from this week came out, well, odd. Instead of my show, it was a repeated shimmering music sound effect and then a female DJ (possibly the one on before me?) saying our station ID. And just those things looped over and over for two hours. I didn't notice this until this weekend - I don't listen to my own shows afterward. I guess I need to change that. So, sadly, this week's show is lost. You can still read the playlist below. I'm perplexed. Sorry, y'all.

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. A whole clutch of great new music tonight and some awesome classics, as always. I had a great time tonight with some giveaways - tickets to see the awesome Dead Confederate tomorrow night, Thursday, September 30th, at the Cat's Cradle in Carborro and some copies of their new 7" single for "Giving It All Away." Thanks to the band for providing me with such great schwag and congrats to our winners.

A heads up and reminder: Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands will be live on the show next week as they prepare for their upcoming shows at the Broach Theatre here in Greensboro. Ought to be an enjoyable show, so make sure you tune in.

Gang of Four - "Never Pay for the Farm" [so this is really far ahead of schedule, but gang of four's first new album in 16 years, content, is dropping in late january of next year. they leaked this song and, really, it's quite good. let's hope they can pull something similar to what mission of burma has been doing in terms of quality reunion output.]
the Sex Pistols - "Holidays in the Sun" [from nevermind the bollocks, here's the sex pistols. i hadn't pulled out this album in quite awhile, mostly because, despite loving it, it belongs to a different era of my life. but i did slip it on in the car the other day and was reminded by how great this opening track is - so there you go.]
Burnt Ones - "Gonna Listen to T. Rex (All Night Long)" [from black tongues, golden teeth. i really enjoy this song - who doesn't enjoy a paeaen to t. rex?]
Liz Phair - "Big Tall Man" [from whitechocolatespaceegg. this song got stuck in my head the other day as well and it ranks among my favorite phair songs.]

Portugal. The Man - "The Dead Dog" [from american ghetto. so, portugal the man is going out on tour and aquarium drunkard is presenting the whole shebang. they'll be in this neck of the woods on saturday, october 16th at the orange peel in asheville. get on it.]
Aztec Camera - "Get Outta London" [from stray, my favorite aztec camera album. i hadn't thought of this record in awhile, but this song swam up into my head this week (as a lot of the classics i play do) and seemed destined to be played. it was.]
Wavves - "King of the Beach" [the title track from their latest. if you missed the WQFS sponsored free show last night at guilford college, well, you missed it. a great show, great music, great free food and just greatness all around.]
Ben Folds Five - "Jackson Cannery" (original 7" version) [from naked baby photos and by request from twitter. i listened to the interesting interview with ben folds and nick hornby on their new collaborative project - hornby writes the lyrics, folds the music - on npr this morning. i'm intrigued enough to maybe want to listen to new ben folds for the first time in years.]

Dead Confederate - "Giving It All Away" [from the new album sugar. they'll be at the cat's cradle in carborro, north carolina on thursday, september 30th. this is where i gave away my first pair of tickets to the show. exciting to give stuff away.]
Brute - "Adirondacks" [from co-balt. brute is the collaborative project of widespread panic and vic chesnutt. they put out two albums under this name and i just snagged this one at the used store this week for a dollar. best dollar i've spent in a long time. a great album.]
Gary Wilson - "In the Night" [from the forthcoming electric endicott. so, the incredibly mysterious and bizarre gary wilson is back. he's going to be appearing on late night with jimmy fallon playing with the roots on wednesday, october 27th and that's going to be a seriously weird night, no doubt. i dig this song, though.]
the Replacements - "Achin' to Be" [from don't tell a soul. i was excited about the 'mats for two reasons recently. one, my buddy matt is reigniting the skyway after a bit of a hiatus. this was the community i first glommed onto in my teenage years when i knew no one who knew the 'mats. second, via his latest email, i learned about color me obsessed, a documentary about the 'mats that is being finished up for dvd release soon. check out the website and interviews. very exciting.]

Cold Water Shave - "Black Coffee" [josh from cold water shave was nice enough to send me these rough mixes of the band's recent recordings with snüzz. they sound excellent and i can't wait to hear more. the band is playing this saturday at the flatiron here in greensboro.]
Callers - "Heartbeat" [a cover of the classic by wire. this landed in my inbox last week and it's a pretty intriguing cover to say the least. wonder if the band's original material is as good? we'll see.]
Superchunk - "Digging for Something" [from majesty shredding. love this record. love this song. love this band.]
Adam Thorn and the Top Buttons - "Where's the Freedom?" [the title track from his last album. adam's got a new record due out later this year, quite different from this album, but adam's an excellent chameleon if nothing else and i can't wait to hear it.]

the Walkmen - "Victory" [from lisbon, their excellent new record that is truly one of the best minimalist rock records i've heard in awhile.]
Versus - "Into Blue" [from their album on the ones and threes. great rock album. i'm enjoying every track i play off of this thing.]
Dead Confederate - "Start Me Laughing" [from their previous album, wrecking ball. slipped this on before giving away the other pair of tickets to their show tomorrow night. it'll be a loud, loud, raucous good time.]
Madeline - "I Waited All Day" [from the tour EP. madeline is playing a house show in raleigh at 1004 parker street. it's open to the public and she'll be playing there on sunday, october 10th at 8pm and again at 9:30pm. check her out.]

Megafaun - "Carolina Days" [from the heretofore EP. i may ease off on playing this EP for a little while - i've been pushing it so heavily for so long. that or i'll take one more week to play the awesome twelve minute "comprovisation" song. brilliant stuff.]
Matthew Sweet - "Faith In You" [from in reverse, sweet's stylistic homage to the wall of sound. it shows up in a lot of the earlier songs on the record, but you can't resists a good ol' fashioned barn burner like this from sweet.]
Steve Wynn and Miracle 3 - "Consider the Source" [from the forthcoming northern aggression. you won't hear more of this for a bit since the album doesn't drop until late november, but it's good, people. seriously.]
J. Tillman - "Albequerque" [from an aquarium drunkard exclusive - j. tillman of fleet foxes recorded a song by song cover of neil young's tonight's the night. it got a blisteringly divisive set of comments over at the AD blog, but i like it.]
Television - "Call Mr. Lee" [from their self-titled reunion record from 1992. not the band's finest moment - i think the production is a bit weak and dated - but a solid set of songs that make it pretty essential for dedicated fans of the band.]
Son Volt - "No More Parades" [from straightaways. i love this album and will defend its honor forever. seriously.]

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 22nd September 2010


[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight's show marks the first of the official fall semester schedule and, as a result, my 11th anniversary as a DJ at WQFS. And I could think of no better way to celebrate 11 years than by doing a great interview with Jonathan Moore of Romancer as a kick off to the annual GreensboroFest weekend which starts tomorrow. More information about that below.

WQFS is bringing you the fantastic Wavves next Tuesday night, 8 PM, at the Guilford College cafeteria. The show also features Christmas Island and Greensboro's own Mutant League. It's a free show with, get this, free pizza and soda for all concert goers as well. It's a must-see show with a must-eat incentive, so make sure you come down and hang with us next Tuesday, September 28th, at the Guilford College cafeteria.

Mansun - "Negative" [from six. one of the weirder bands of the britpop era - way more influenced by prog-rock and trad-rock, but their first two albums - this one and its predecessor, attack of the grey lantern, are simply fantastic.]

[Here's where I spoke with Jonathan Moore of Romancer, one of a whole slew of bands playing at the annual GreensboroFest which kicks off tomorrow night. Jonathan and his music are no stranger to my show - he's been interviewed before in addition to being a member of two mainstays of local music on my show, Tiger Bear Wolf and Health. We talked about Romancer, what all that project is about, the legacy of Tiger Bear Wolf, GreensboroFest, Greensboro music and a lot more. Enjoy.]

Megafaun - "Heretofore" [the title track from their new EP. well, this piece of perfection is finally out. i really can't say enough good things about it, so let me rave about their show this past weekend as part of the duke performances series. i knew i was in for something special when it was announced that megafaun, fight the big bull, sharon van etten and justin vernon would be doing reinterpretations of songs from alan lomax's sounds of the south collection, but i truly wasn't prepared for how amazing it was. can't wait to hear the live recordings that are going to be released of it in the near future.]
Dr. Dog - "Shadow People" [from shame, shame. a record that i haven't spent as much time with as i'd like, but a great band and a very good song.]
Twin Sister - "Lady Daydream" [from color your life. i hadn't played any twin sister in awhile, but then i got an email about them appearing on the shaking through webseries and was reminded how much i love this band. song of the year? maybe.]
the Kingsbury Manx - "And What Fallout!" [from the fast rise and fall of the south. another great north carolina band i saw at the hopscotch festival the other weekend. love this song.]

Steve Wynn and Miracle 3 - "Resolution" [from the forthcoming northern aggression which will be out in november. i haven't had a chance to go through the album yet, but this opening track is dynamic and really, really good. we'll be hearing more.]
Drive-by Truckers - "Drag the Lake Charlie" [from the big to-do. one of the great songs from the new album that the truckers played up in raleigh this past sunday. if you've never seen the truckers live, do yourself a favor and go do it. even if you're only passingly familiar with them, they are a sight to behold.]
Stornoway - "I Saw You Blink" [from beachcomber's windowsill. one of my favorite albums of this year. this song reminds me, especially, of the stone roses and that's a very, very good thing.]
Fountains of Wayne - "New Routine" [from traffic and weather. got an email last week announcing that fountains of wayne are doing a mini-tour and putting the finishing touches on their new album. can't wait to hear it.]

Superchunk - "Everything at Once" [from majesty shredding. i find this a little hard to believe, but i guess it's true. superchunk were on jimmy fallon's late night show the other night and it was the first time the band made a network tv appearance in sixteen years. so to add a special touch to their performance of "digging for something" from the new album, they did a web-only exclusive performance of on the mouth's "precision auto." yes, they still rock that hard. check it out.]
Wavves - "Mickey Mouse" [from king of the beach. like i mentioned above (and as the PSA before this song announces), we're hosting this band live next tuesday at the guilford cafeteria. make sure to be there.]
Anika - "Yang Yang" [from her new self-titled album. got this mp3 in email today and was drawn in by the fact that a) stones throw records was distributing it, b) this woman had worked with a member of portishead and c) something about her being a political writer. sold! we'll be hearing more, hopefully.]
Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets - "Honest Eyed Woman" [from snake river canyon. another band you might have missed last friday night at the green bean and should regret it. make up for it. they'll be at nightlight in chapel hill tomorrow, thursday, september 23rd and at the garage in winston-salem on friday, september 24th.]

the Walkmen - "Juveniles" [from lisbon. their new album is fantastic and we'll be hearing a lot more from this record over the next few weeks.]
Nanci Griffith - "I Would Bring You Ireland" (live) [from the one fair summer's evening live record. i've always loved this rendition of this song and this record is one of my favorite griffith albums in general. beautiful stuff.]

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 15th September 2010


[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. This was the second week of training schedule, so I was joined by Elizabeth and Kate, new DJs who will have their own wonderful shows this coming year, I'm sure. They were very good at playing exactly what I told them to play, but you'll get to hear some of the live training going on when they do on-air reads. So, pardon the spottiness of those.

Couple of awesome shows coming up. WQFS is featuring a free show this Friday, September 17th outside of the Hege-Cox building on Guilford campus featuring the awesome Lower Dens, Secret Message Machine and Chaud Lapin. Show starts at 8 PM and is, you know, free. We also have Wavves coming to Guilford on Tuesday, September 28th, so get ready for that free show as well. They'll have the awesome Mutant League and Christmas Island joining them on the bill.

Public Enemy - "War at 33 1/3" [from fear of a black planet. if you follow me on twitter or read my piece about the hopscotch festival over at aquarium drunkard, you know that public enemy put on an amazing show saturday night in which they performed this album in its entirety. yeah. simply incredible.]
Burnt Ones - "Sunset Hill" [from black teeth and golden tongues. i'm digging on this record more and more, the first album released on roaring colonel, the new record label from the folks over at my old kentucky blog. it's really good.]
Lower Dens - "Completely Golden" [from twin-hand movement. they're going to be here at guilford this friday, september 17th, as i mentioned above, and i'm quite excited. hadn't heard of this band before hearing we had them coming and, well, the record is excellent. be there on friday.]

Blonde Readhead - "Here Sometimes" [from the new album penny sparkle which finally saw its release this week. perhaps we'll hear more. they'll be at the cat's cradle in carborro on saturday, october 30th.]
Depeche Mode - "Policy of Truth" [from violator. i hadn't played any depeche mode in awhile, so why not. this album holds up pretty well - it's an interesting bridge between the sonic 80s and 90s.]
Delta Spirit - "St. Francis" [from history from below. endlessly great, though it may be time to retire this record until the year end show.]
Jarvis Cocker - "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time" [from his self-titled first solo record. in case you'd forgotten, the video for this is really fantastic.]

Conrad Plymouth - "Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway (again)" [from wisco: a tribute to wilco's summerteeth. this compilation is made up entirely of wisconsin bands and was put together by the awesome people at muzzle of bees. you can download the entire thing for free, but they are asking you to throw a few bones at the wisconsin humane society as well. great music for a great cause.]
the Walkmen - "Blue As Your Blood" [from the new album lisbon which just dropped this week. this album is really, really good and has been getting universally rave reviews. for very good reason.]
Woods - "Time Fading Lines" [from at echo lake. they were at the hopscotch festival and i wish i'd caught them, but the festival lineup was so overwhelming. sacrifices had to be made.]
Superchunk - "Fractures in Plaster" [from the awesome new majesty shredding which i reviewed over at aquarium drunkard this week. it's a truly fantastic record.]

Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets - "So Gone" [the lead track from this year's snake river canyon. caleb and the 'nets will be playing this friday night, september 17th, at the green bean in downtown greensboro opening for the lake isle. ought to be a great show. i'm going to be there to catch caleb before scampering back to guilford for lower dens.]
Samantha Crain - "Lions" [from the new album you (understood). i am not sure why the midnight shivers band name has been dropped from after hers for this album, but this song is definitely up there with some of the best stuff on her excellent last album. we'll hear more.]
Arcade Fire - "The Suburbs" [the title track from their latest. at this point i reckon i don't need to say anything else about this album.]
the Alcazar Hotel - "Suicide King" [the a side of their new 7" single that was released the other week. well worth checking out. chapel hill rock.]

Megafaun - "Bonnie's Song" [from the truly amazing heretofore EP which was released this week. i really can't say enough good things about this record and, honestly, the more i listen to it, the better it gets.]
Ben Lee - "Ketchum" [from something to remember me by. this is the song that taught me not only how hemingway died, but what city he was in when it happened. history through song.]
the Love Language - "This Blood is Our Own" [from libraries. another amazing performer from the hopscotch festival. the people who put that fest together are owed an endless amount of thanks by the state.]
Bear in Heaven - "You Do You" [from beast rest forth mouth. they played an awesome show at hopscotch as well, and now that it's over, we can announce that WQFS will be having bear in heaven in greensboro in november. stay tuned for details.]

Teenage Fanclub - "Shock and Awe" [from the awesome shadows. they'll be at the 930 club in washington, d.c. on saturday, october 2nd.]
the Old 97s - "Lonely Holiday" [by request. from fight songs. this is a band i've never spent a lot of time with, but i dug this song, so maybe it's time to start digging.]
Belle and Sebastian - "Another Sunny Day" [from the life pursuit. word on the street is that they have a new album coming our way. hopefully it'll be as good as this last one.]

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 8th September 2010


[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. This week and next are training weeks for our new DJs. I had the pleasure of being joined by long-time listener Frank and a former student of mine, Anthony, who are both going to become new members of the QFS family. They did a good job tonight and will do a fine job on their respective shows in the future.

Tomorrow kicks off the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh and yours truly will be there for each of the three nights. Follow me on Twitter for my live tweeting and I should be doing some coverage over at Aquarium Drunkard as well. It will be a blast. Can't wait to get there.

Superchunk - "My Gap Feels Weird" [from the forthcoming majesty shredding. i have not stopped listening to this record over the past week, and honestly it takes quite a record to make me do that these days. granted, i'm biased because i love this band, but this album is really, really good.]
Marah - "It's Only Money, Tyrone" [from kids in philly. one of my favorite albums of the past decade and it only gets better with age.]
Autolux - "Supertoys" [from transit transit. accidentally played this again, but you know, hey, i'm excited about their forthcoming sophomore album and you should be, too.]
Nine Inch Nails - "Ruiner" [from the downward spiral. got this in my head earlier today and i so rarely..well..really hardly ever play nine inch nails on my show. so why not? this is another album that, honestly, has aged pretty well considering. doesn't sound dated to me.]

the Love Language - "Heart to Tell" [from libraries. it might be time to retire this record until later in the year, but this is certainly important since the band is playing at hopscotch. so is former love language members in the light pines.]
Cornershop - "Sleep on the Left Side" [from when i was born for the 7th time. cornershop is coming to the cat's cradle in carborro in november. yeah, you heard that. i think i want to go.]
the Rosebuds - "Stayin' Alive" [one of the two songs recorded to help promote the hopscotch festival, this cover of the bee gee's classic is really good. gutsy, i say.]
Josh Ritter - "The Curse" [from so runs the world away. one of the lovelier songs from his latest. this record is starting to grow on me a bit, but it's a slow one.]

the Thermals - "I Don't Believe You" [from the new album personal life. their latest dropped yesterday and the reviews so far have been middling. hard to believe considering how great this song is, but apparently it's an outlier on the album. thoughts, anyone who's heard the whole thing?]
the Didjits - "Gold Eldorado" [from the fantastic hornet pinata. a band i wish i could've seen in their prime. these records are so ridiculously awesome.]

Sixteen Horsepower - "Outlaw Song" [from folklore. i revisited this album this week - the final album of their tenure as a band - and forgot how eerily low key it is at times versus the rest of their oeuvre. but in a really, really good way.]

Wavves - "Mickey Mouse" [from king of the beach. hadn't played this track off the album yet, but really dug it. does disney go crazy when you use names of licensed characters in songs? like when they go threaten to carpet bomb elementary schools that paint pictures of characters on cafeteria walls?]
Bad Religion - "Frogger" [from the 80-85 compilation of their early work that collects their debut album how could hell be any worse? along with various singles and so forth. a pretty good look at the earlier, more lo-fi version of the band.]
Avi Buffalo - "What's In It For?" [from their self-titled major-indie debut. a great song that is about a minute and a half too long. boy, you could make a killer edit of this thing.]
the Handsome Family - "Weightless Again" [from through the trees. one of my all time favorite songs, period. not just for its reference to moby dick, but the killer chorus. perfection in writing and tone.]

Megafaun - "Heretofore" [the title track from their forthcoming new EP. by request from sara who wanted to hear new megafaun last week. i'm a week late, but here you go. they'll be playing saturday night at hopscotch. excitement.]
Public Image Ltd. - "Poptones" [from second edition. one of those albums that defies explanation and time and description. it's not something you'd throw on every day, but sometimes it's the best thing in the world. and on some distant world, this was a major radio hit.]

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 1st September 2010


[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight's show was, to say the least, bonkers. I was joined by the members of the Alcazar Hotel who proceeded to give me one of the most energetic interviews I've had in a long time. I hope y'all enjoy it. They're playing at the Flatiron this Saturday, September 4th as a celebration show for the release of their new 7" single. Check it out and I'll see you at the show.

the Posies - "Love Letter Boxes" [from frosting on the beater. the band has a new record coming out this month and will be at the cat's cradle in carborro with brendan benson on thursday, november 18th. a prodigious evening of power pop.]
Carissa's Wierd - "Die" [from the new they'll only miss you when you leave compilation collecting a lot of the work of this seattle band that was a precursor for band of horses and sera cahoone's solo work. really great song. i need to hear more.]
Avett Brothers - "Pretty Girl at the Airport" [by request. from mignonette. this is probably my all time favorite avett's song and it still just gets me.]

Lower Dens - "Completely Golden" [from twin-hand movement. this band will be playing on guilford college campus on friday, september 17th in front of the hege-cox art building. going to be a great show, for sure.]
XTC - "The Mayor of Simpleton" [from oranges and lemons. a fun, poppy song in the vein of everything great XTC ever did. yeah.]
Futurebirds - "APO" [from hampton's lullabye. i love this song and cannot wait to see these guys live again. west coast, get ready, they're on their way out your way now.]
Secret Message Machine - "Cover the Cross" [from orphanville. they're going to be opening for lower dens at our WQFS show here at guilford. can't wait.]
Prince - "The Cross" [from sign o' the times. when i knew i was playing the secret message machine song, this was the natural fit to follow it. what can i say?]

Superchunk - "Rosemarie" [from the forthcoming majesty shredding and oh, my, god, this album is ridiculously good. this is one of my favorites, but we'll hear a ton more.]
Nanci Griffith - "I'll Move Along" [by request. from blue roses from the moon. this was my introduction to nanci and, man, i love it.]
Mynabirds - "The Numbers Don't Lie" (live) [from their session over at daytrotter which is, seriously, awesome. love this band.]
Girls Against Boys - "Rockets are Red" [from venus luxure no. 1 baby. is it time to revisit this band and decide how awesome they are again? critics? hello?]

They're playing this Saturday at the Flatiron with the Old One Two and Matty Sheets and the Blockheads as a premiere for their new 7" single which you really ought to come pick up. Why not?
