J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 16th February 2011

Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I apologize for the lack of show last week. A real bummer considering Josh and Derrick of The Grand Old Uproar came by and laid down an awesome set of live songs and a great interview. I hate that the recording wasn't possible. Sadly, that's how it goes.

But thankfully, everything was all good this week as Caleb Caudle stopped by to talk about his band, Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets, and their upcoming show at the Green Bean this Saturday, February 19th. He played some live songs and talked for a bit. Great stuff all around. See below for details.

Now, while it's getting good, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 16th February 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Arcade Fire - "Ready to Start" [from the suburbs. i couldn't help myself and had to open with something off the winner of the album of the year grammy this past weekend. big ups to arcade fire and merge records for an awesome, unexpected victory.]
Fugazi - "Foreman's Dog" [from end hits. just got to thinking the other day how this fall will be ten years since the final fugazi album was released. retrospective time, i believe.]
Drive-by Truckers - "Everybody Needs Love" [from go-go boots, the new album which just dropped yesterday. we'll be hearing a lot more.]
Superchunk - "The Question is How Fast" [from on the mouth. since we opened with a merge records band, i figured we'd close with a merge band.]

[Here's where Caleb Caudle and I began talking. We discussed the upcoming show at the Green Bean, their new West Salem Session digital EP which goes live on Saturday, working with Caitlin Cary, adding new members to the band and Caleb graced us with three, unreleased songs played live. Check 'em out below.]

Caleb Caudle - "Hesitate" (live) [a song i've heard caleb and the band playing live for a bit, but here it is in stripped down acoustic mode. click here to listen.]
Caleb Caudle - "Lock and Key" (live) [another new song. this one will appear in full-band mode on the new EP. click here to listen.]
Caleb Caudle - "The Storm, Your Beauty and Me" (live) [another new song, this one also from the new EP and also, probably, bound for recording on the next caleb caudle and the bayonets LP. click here to listen.]
>
Caleb Caudle and the Bayonets feat. Caitlin Cary - "I Don't Think Heaven Would Take Us (If It Can't Have Us Both)" [a duet with the tres chicas/ex-whiskeytown member. pretty awesome that this happened, i must say.]
Mclusky - "To Hell With Good Intentions" [from do dallas. hey, i miss these guys. when might future of the left have another record coming out?]
Apex Manor - "The Party Line" [from the year of magical drinking. you know, i think the newly moved blind tiger would be a great spot for these guys to come play. you hear me, merge records/ross/anyone who can make that happen?]
Blur - "You're So Great" [from their self-titled album. one of these days i'm going to write an extensive piece about how my deep love for this record was thwarted for years by stupidity on my part. it's an interesting story, i swear.]
>
the Decemberists - "Cuyahoga" [yes, as in the REM song. not sure where this is from, but it popped up on twitter this week and man, i'm digging it. one of my fav REM songs and given a reverential treatment here by the decemberists.]
Lush - "500" [from lovelife. an album i've been rediscovering slowly. amazing stuff and sadly, their last.]
the Veils - "Bloom" [from troubles of the brain which i reviewed the other week at aquarium drunkard. really good.]
Supergrass - "Cheapskate" [from in it for the money, probably my favorite supergrass album. it stands up so amazingly well.]
>
Telekinesis - "You Turn Clear in the Sun" [from the excellent 12 desperate straight lines which i also reviewed at aquarium drunkard this week. can't wait to see them at local 506 on march 13th. that show is sold out, folks.]
Filthybird - "Pick Me Up" [from songs for other people. they'll be at kings in raleigh next tuesday, february 22nd along with athens, georgia's futurebirds.]
Jim White - "Bluebird" [from jim white presents: sounds of the americans. sadly, i don't have the album information on this song so i have no idea who the female singer is. i reviewed this album at aquarium drunkard as well. i'll have to ask jim tomorrow night in charlotte at the evening muse, friday at duke university in durham or saturday at SECCA in winston-salem. this is a masterful re-working of a song originally from jim's third album, drill a hole in that substrate.]
the Damnwells - "Werewolves" [from no one listens to the band anymore. thankfully, they will be at kings in raleigh on tuesday, march 29th.]
>
Hammer No More the Fingers - "Shark" [from black shark. haven't gotten all the way through the album yet, but the first three tracks are killer, especially this song, we'll be hearing more from this band from the triangle.]
Bill Fox - "Over and Away She Goes" [from shelter from the smoke, which the head drunkard was lauding this week. people love them some bill fox and i can see why.]
Lonnie Walker - "Compass Comforts" [from these times old times - another raleigh band to add to the frey. pretty good live, if i do say so myself.]
Nina Simone - "Save Me" [a take on an aretha franklin song and a pretty great way to close out the evening.]

That'll do it for this week. We should be doing the Indie/Rock Roundtable next week, though I've been behind on getting in touch with our friend Ryan, so we'll see how it goes. Either way, I'll see you next week. Until then, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 2nd February 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. It was a really solid night - the first just two hours of music in a few weeks. The next couple of weeks will see us with guests each week. On February 9th, Cold Water Shave will be joining us in studio. On February 16th, tentatively, Caleb Caudle will be joining us again for what has become a yearly visit from the Winston-Salem musician and on February 23rd, Ryan Snyder from YES Weekly will be joining us for our monthly Indie/Rock Roundtable discussion of new albums. It's going to be an awesome February here on the show.

Now, while we can, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 2nd February 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Birds of Avalon - "Xarardheere" [from their new self-titled album. this is some seriously good stuff and we'll be hearing a lot more.]
Girls Against Boys - "Cruise Your New Baby Fly Self" [the title track (sort of) from their 1995 album cruise yourself. i rarely hear people discuss this band anymore, but it's a shame, because this and the two records that flank it chronologically, are some of the best heavy indie-rock of the 90s.]
Abe Vigoda - "Crush" [the title track from last year's stellar album. they'll be playing at legitimate business here in greensboro, courtesy of WQFS, next wednesday along with the similarly awesome wild nothing. going to be a great night.]
the Clash - "Janie Jones" [from the clash. there's a reason john cusack's character in high fidelity checks this as one of the top five side one-track ones of all time. cos it is.]
>
Lucinda Williams - "Buttercup" [from the forthcoming blessed due out in early march. have a phone interview with her set up for early next week. stay tuned.]
the Stone Roses - "She Bangs the Drums" [from their self-titled debut. been hearing this stuff a lot lately, so i figured i ought to dig it out.]
Black Pistol Fire - "Silent Blue" [from their self-titled record. we dug into these guys last week on the show as part of the inaugural Indie/Rock Roundtable feature. pretty good stuff.]
the White Stripes - "Icky Thump" [the title track from what, apparently, is going to be their final studio album of new material. the band announced today, via their website, that the band is now officially no more.]
>
Apex Manor - "The Party Line" [from the year of magical drinking. bound, surely, for my best singles of 2011 show in december.]
the dB's - "A Spy in the House of Love" [from like this. a long time listener requested this once and i was really blown away, having not heard it before at the time.]
Jim White - "Rambler" [from jim white presents: sounds of the americans. jim is going to be at SECCA in winston-salem on saturday, february 19th. cannot wait.]
Pulp - "Babies" [from his 'n' hers. a friend specifically requested some pulp this week, so i went with one of my favorite jarivs songs of voyuerism, shagging and borderline anti-social behavior.]
>
Telekinesis - "Please Ask for Help" [from the forthcoming 12 desperate straight lines. seriously. does this song not sound like "just like heaven" to you? i mean, in a completely good way. but still. the new record drops february 15th.]
Dinosaur Jr. - "Just Like Heaven" [from the fossils 12" EP. now, i wasn't paying attention and this 12" record was 45 RPM. since it was a 12", i assumed it was 33 RPM and played it as such. you should enjoy the results. i did.]
the Smith Westerns - "Weekend" [the lead track from dye it blonde. this is bound for the best singles show, too.]
Echo and the Bunnymen - "Heaven Up Here" [the title track from their 1981 album. the band is coming stateside later this year to play a series of shows where they play crocodiles and heaven up here in their entirety. ought to be awesome.]
>
the Veils - "The Wishbone" [from troubles of the brain. check out my review of it over at aquarium drunkard. a really great EP from this awesome band.]
Slint - "Good Morning Captain" [from spiderland. over at aquarium drunkard there was also a piece on this album's cover art. slint is a handy name to remember for 'name a band from this state' games. the answer is kentucky.]
the Love Language - "Heart to Tell" [from libraries. the band will be at the new blind tiger here in greensboro on friday, february 4th. put on your dancing shoes.]
the Staple Singers - "Masters of War" [from how many roads: black america sings bob dylan, a really awesome collection of black artists covering dylan. aquarium drunkard did a post about it and you can hear this song plus one other over there.]
>
Fleet Foxes - "Helplessness Blues" [the title track from their sophomore LP which will be out in may. start salivating now, folks.]
Futurebirds - "APO" [from hampton's lullabye. they'll be at king's in raleigh on tuesday, february 22nd along with..]
Filthybird - "Leaving Trail" [from songs for other people. this has to be one of the most joni mitchell sounding things on this album and i mean that in all the best ways possible. lead singer, renee, played this song live on the show back in april of 2009. check it out.]
T. Rex - "Planet Queen" [from electric warrior. can this record really get any better? any opinions on how this album stacks up against other t. rex albums? i'm a bit ignorant.]
>
Greater Pacific - "Distance" [from their forthcoming EP rainfall. the band contains two members of the excellent travel by sea, so we'll hear more.]
Blur - "There's No Other Way" [from leisure because, well, it's awesome.]
Josh Ritter - "Wolves" (acoustic) [this is from the forthcoming expanded edition of the animal years. ritter re-recorded the entire album as a solo acoustic record and is including that on a bonus disc, along with four b-sides from the era, with a new edition of his breakthrough album.]

That'll do it for this week. Be safe on Super Bowl Sunday and until next week, take care.
