J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 30th March 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight, I was finally, thanks to a lack of ineptitude this month on my part, re-joined in the studio by Ryan Snyder, music editor at YES Weekly, for the Indie/Rock Roundtable. The last Wednesday of every month, we'll be reviewing two new records and talking about some random topic. Check out below to see what records we tackled and check out Ryan's excellent writing over at YES Weekly as well.

Now, while the going's good, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 30th March 2011

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
New York Dolls - "Funky but Chic" [from the new dancing backward in high heels. this song was originally recorded on david johansen's 1978 self-titled solo record, so johansen and sylvain took it for another spin. not bad.]
Dream Theatre - "Home" [from metropolis pt. 2: scenes from a memory. i'm not going to offer any defense for playing dream theatre. this is for melissa.]
Dum Dum Girls - "Wrong Feels Right" [from the he gets me high EP. meanwhile, head on over to the AV club and check out the girls covering big star's "september gurls" for their undercover series.]
P.O.S. - "Graves (We Wrote Back)" [from never better. i am officially on watch for a new record from p.o.s. i still bump this album regularly.]

[Here's where I talked with Ryan Snyder of YES Weekly for our monthly J's Indie/Rock Roundtable. We goofed a little and skipped February, but Ryan will be joining us on the last Wednesday of each month to discuss two new albums and a random topic. This month, it's the Mountain Goat's new LP, All Eternals Deck and Broken Bells' new EP, Meyrin Fields. We also talked about kickin' it live with Prince this past week. Check out the podcast to hear our verdicts on all of this.]

the Mountain Goats - "Birth of Serpents" [from all eternals deck.]
the Mountain Goats - "Estate Sale Sign" [also from all eternals deck.]
Broken Bells - "Meyrin Fields" [the title track from the new EP.]
Broken Bells - "Windows" [also from the meyrin fields EP.]
>
Prince - "3121" (live) [from indigo nights, a nice little live show recorded back in 2008. ryan said he heard someone in a car blasting this on the stereo as he left the station, so a good sign overall.]
Obits - "I Want Results" [from moody, standard and poor. this new album finally dropped this week and i'm terribly excited. we'll be hearing a lot more.]
the Suicide Commandos - "Mosquito Crucifixion" [from make a record. early minneapolis punk circa 1978. this is the lone studio record the suicide commandos made, but man, is it scorching.]
Twilight Singers - "On the Corner" [from dynamite steps. more from their excellent new album. they'll be at the cat's cradle in carborro on saturday, may 7th.]
>
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "Belong" [the title track from their latest. a lot thicker, a lot louder and more rocking than previous efforts. we're going to be hearing a lot more. they're playing this saturday, april 2nd at the cat's cradle in carborro along with twin shadow.]
the Whigs - "Right Hand on My Heart" [from mission control. one of my favorite whigs songs of all time. they'll be at the blind tiger here in greensboro next tuesday, april 5th.]
Lake Isle - "Wake Up" [from the wake up EP. local boys who got the nod to open for the whigs next tuesday at the blind tiger. tear it up.]
Jonny - "I Want to Be Around" [from their self-titled debut. new work from euros childs of gorky's zygotic mynci and norman blake of teenage fanclub. the album will be out later in april and they'll be at the cat's cradle in carborro on tuesday, june 14th.]
>
Wye Oak - "The Altar" [from civilian. one of those slow burn records that grabs you from the beginning, but doesn't truly sink in for awhile.]
Wild Wild Geese - "King Rat" [from sorry, earth. band from durham, north carolina that has some pretty raucous rock on this record. we'll hear more.]
J. Mascis - "Several Shades of Why" [the title track from his newest solo release. the record sounds like acoustic dinosaur jr. which, i suppose, is about right. i'll probably play my favorite song from the record next week, a dark and longer song.]
Futurebirds - "Wild Heart" [from the forthcoming via flemina EP out on autumn tone records. a cover of a stevie nicks song from her second solo record. there's another cover on the album, too. maybe we'll hear that next week.]
>
T. Rex - "Baby Strange" [from the slider. i first heard this song via a live cover by the replacements. i should have followed this up with a 'mats song, shouldn't i have?]
REM - "(All I Have to Do Is) Dream" [from the athens ga. inside/out soundtrack. got this on vinyl at ed mckay's this week at a stupid low price for what it is. a legendary indie-rock documentary.]

That'll do it for the show this week. I'll be back next week with the usual two hours of rock and roll and lots of new and classic stuff. Until then, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 23rd March 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. It was a really awesome show tonight with a pretty consistent explosive rock and roll feel to the full two hours. I think you need to save this one for an awesome, sunny early-spring weekend afternoon that will be hopefully coming all of y'all's ways soon.

Now, before we can even get distracted, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 23rd March 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
MYTY KONKEROR - "Whitewash" [from i miss the future, a really fantastic sounding record that is now available in vinyl, including a way to help raise some money for japan by purchasing some limited edition swag. check out twin lakes records' site for more details.]
the Supersuckers - "The Evil Powers of Rock and Roll" [the title track from their 1999 album. i threw this up since supersuckers frontman, eddie spaghetti, is playing at tremont music hall in charlotte on sunday, march 27th. good rock and roll.]
Oakley Hall - "Confidence Man" [the lead track from gypsum strings. because of a goofy previous dj who left the continuous play button on, i accidentally played some prince alongside this. hope it sounded decent..]
the Henry Clay People - "California Wildfire" [from their forthcoming this is a desert EP. go grab the track over at aquarium drunkard. sounds awesome.]
>
Telekinesis - "Car Crash" [from 12 desperate straight lines. another of my favorite songs from the live show the other week. this record just really came alive in that live setting. go see this band live. now.]
the Clash - "Safe European Home" [from give 'em enough rope, a record that doesn't get nearly enough credit or mention in the clash catalogue considering how ridiculously good it is. this opening track especially.]
Obits - "You Gotta Lose" [from the forthcoming moody, standard and poor. sad i missed these guys live earlier this year. come back around when the record drops, guys. please?]
Devin Davis - "Giant Spiders" [from lonely people of the world, unite, a record i never get tired of in the realm of great, unsung power pop gems. seriously awesome.]
>
Jonny - "Candyfloss" [from their forthcoming self-titled debut out on merge records next month. jonny features norman blake of teenage fanclub and euros childs of gorky's zygotic mynci and it's really quite good. we'll hear a lot more.]
Catherine Wheel - "Crank" [from their sophomore effort, chrome, a record that doesn't get quite as much credit as their awesome debut, but is still quite stunning.]
Lucinda Williams - "Convince Me" [from blessed, her latest album. i'm still enjoying it a lot - the most i have one of her albums in some time.]
Liz Phair - "Divorce Song" [from exile in guyville. found out today that a friend of mine is getting separated from their partner, so, this song lept to my mind. oh, liz. how we miss you.]
>
Sloan - "She's Slowing Down Again" [from the forthcoming the double cross which is due out in may on yep roc records. it's really solid, as most all of sloan's stuff has been in recent years. we'll hear plenty more.]
Mary Lou Lord - "Seven Sisters" [from got no shadow. i tweeted about this - is it possible to hear this record and not love it? and if you don't, do you have a soul? yeah, it's that beautiful. even, what, 15 years later?]
Sebadoh - "The Freed Pig" [from III. sebadoh is going to be at the cat's cradle this sunday, march 27th. probably going to be a pretty awesome show, all told.]
the Damnwells - "She Goes Around" [from no one listens to the band anymore, their latest and they'll be at kings in raleigh on tuesday, march 29th. get excited.]
>
the Mountain Goats - "Damn These Vampires" [from the new all eternals deck. i'm digging this record so far, but we'll see how it works out. probably going to be one of the ones ryan snyder and i look at for next week's indie/rock roundtable. meanwhile, catch them at the cat's cradle on friday, april 8th along with megafaun.]
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "Young Adult Friction" [from their self-titled 2009 album. can't wait to see them live on saturday, april 2nd at local 506 with twin shadow.]
the Joy Formidable - "Austere" [from a balloon called moaning. they'll be at duke coffeehouse in durham tomorrow night, thursday, march 24th. get on it.]
Prince - "U Got the Look" [from sign o' the times. his royal badness is in raleigh tonight, charlotte tomorrow and here in greensboro on saturday, march 26th! i can't wait! this is a ridiculous level of excitement i have, y'all.]
>
the Veils - "The Wishbone" [from troubles of the brain EP which is, honestly, really, really good. bound for some year end accolades from me, at least.]
Big Black - "The Model" [from songs about fucking, their cover of a classic kraftwerk song. one of my favorite album titles to not quite exactly say on the air.]
Wire - "Mannequin" [from pink flag. you can check out my album art piece about this album over at aquarium drunkard. love this album.]
Yuck - "Shook Down" [from their self-titled album. i'm getting more and more into this record, i don't care how much like the 90s it sounds, no one has sounded this much like the 90s and done it so well since the 90s, so there.]
>
the Rural Alberta Advantage - "Stamp" [from departing. an awesome song, and we'll definitely have to hear more off this new album. keep your ears open.]
Travis - "The Line Is Fine" [from good feeling. for mad dog, who was listening, and who has a shared love for travis' first album along with me. he was never as big on the man who though. we aren't all perfect.]
Dom - "Burn Bridges" [from sun bronzed greek gods. digging this EP quite a bit and we'll have to hear some more as i believe it's getting reissued on a label soon.]
Patti Smith - "Gloria: In Excelsis Deo / Gloria" [from horses. my obsession continues as i continue reading the amazing just kids. seriously, go pick that book up now.]

That'll do it for this week. Ryan Snyder from Yes! Weekly will be back with us next week for the Indie/Rock Roundtable discussing new records from Scritti Politti and the Mountain Goats, so make sure you tune in for that. Until then, Go Heels!, and take care.

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 16th March 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Telekinesis - "50 Ways" [from 12 desperate straight lines. these guys put on a whale of a show on sunday night at local 506. if you can catch michael lerner and company live, do so with a quickness.]
the Darkness - "Best of Me" [from the get your hands off my woman single. word is that the darkness is getting back together? is it so? i'll tell you that that debut album is still just a great slice of big, dumb rock and roll. clever to boot.]
Hammer No More the Fingers - "Shark" [from black shark. great music from more north carolina bands. we'll be hearing more of this as well.]
Teenage Fanclub - "The Concept" [from bandwagonesque. on sunday night, michael lerner pulled out the acoustic and did a cover of this teenage fanclub classic. pretty awesome to say the least.]
>
the Decemberists - "This is Why We Fight" [from the king is dead. one of my favorites from the new album. this record is really, really solid, people.]
Sloan - "Follow the Leader" / "The Answer Was You" [from the upcoming the double cross. i'm at a bit of a loss and i talk about this on the podcast: the opening three tracks on this album are a masterful collision of songs that just run into each other. love it as a listener, hate it as a DJ. so i decided to at least play the first two together.]
Adam Thorn and the Top Buttons - "Through That Hallway" [from their self-titled sophomore album. genuinely good stuff.]

[Here's where I did my interview with Butterflies. We talked about their history as a band, bringing Patrick into the fold for their recent record, Residual Child, getting on with Trekky Records and heard a few live songs as well. Enjoy.]

Butterflies - "Goodbye (Like a Stranger)" (live) [the first single off of their latest record. a great little song. click here to listen.]
Butterflies - "Serious Fun" (live) [the lead track off of the new album - great li'l weezer reference in it as well. click here to listen.]

>
Butterflies - "Sunday Afternoon" [from residual child. another great song from their new album. don't forget to catch them saturday night at the green bean along with matty sheets and the blockheads starting at 8pm.]
Prince - "When You Were Mine" [from dirty mind. so, i totally got tickets to see his royal badness in less than two weeks here in greensboro. i am suitably excited.]
the Twilight Singers - "When Doves Cry" [a pretty solid cover of this prince classic by greg dulli and company.]
Smith Westerns - "Weekend" [from dye it blonde. lead track from their latest. hope i get a chance to see them live again and re-evaluate my thoughts.]
>
tUnE-yArDs - "Bizness" [from w h o k i l l. they have a new record coming out in april on 4AD and this is the first single - i'm digging it. we'll hear more.]
Dirty Gold - "California Sunrise" [the first single from this san diego band for the autumn tone label. available on iTunes now with the EP on its way.]

the Whigs - "In the Dark" [the title track from their latest. still really excited that these guys are playing at the blind tiger on april 5th. going to be an awesome night of rock.]
>
New York Dolls - "Fool For You Baby" [from dancing backwards in high heels. so who knew the new york dolls were putting out another record? i do find the production on this not nearly as good as on the first two reunion records, but it's got some great songs. plus, check out this interview with david johansen over at the AV club.]
Beastie Boys - "An Open Letter to NYC" [from to the 5 boroughs. so a release date for the new beasties album, hot sauce committee part 2 was finally announced this week for early may. cannot wait.]
the Streets - "Going through Hell" [from computers and blues. where i will still go to bat for the first two streets albums, checking out mike skinner's work has turned increasingly into a chore rather than pleasure. we'll see when i get done actually listening to this album all the way through, but in the meantime, here's the first single.]
Patti Smith - "Break It Up" [from horses. i've finally begun reading smith's just kids this week and it is brilliant. just absolutely awesome. so here's some patti in tribute.]

That'll do it for this week. Tune in next week for more great music, but until then, Go Heels!, and take care.

Now, while we can, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 9th March 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
R.E.M. - "Discoverer" [from the new album collapse into now which i definitely called by the wrong name on the actual show. my bad, michael. hey, you know, this new record ain't bad and i've kinda tuned out on REM records since..well..pretty much since bill berry left, so this is pretty interesting.]
the Happy Mondays - "Kinky Afro" [from pills 'n' thrills and bellyaches. probably, in a lot of ways, the greatest one-off record of all time. yes, i know they made other albums, but are they really much to shout about compared to this one? nope.]
Cut Copy - "Alisa" [from zonoscope. i'm really enjoying this record. anyone with me?]
Television - "Friction" [from marquee moon. the bass line that punctuates the end of the bridge on this song is one of my favorite musical moments ever. i don't know why.]

[Here's where the interview with Eric and Maria from Illicitizen begins. We talked about their history as a band, influences, what it's like to relentlessly self-promote and took a listen to a few live performances.]

Illicitizen - "Needle" (live) [another new song that isn't on any currently released records. click here to listen.]
Illicitizen - "It Ends" (live) [a song from their self-titled debut. usually their set closer, as eric notes in the beginning. click here to listen.]
>
Illicitizen - "To Arms" [from their self-titled record. they just had a friend shoot a video for the song and you can check it out here.]
Drive-by Truckers - "Everybody Needs Love" [from the excellent new go-go boots album. hope i can get a chance to see them live on this tour.]
Beady Eye - "The Roller" [from different gear, still speeding, the new record from what is, essentially, oasis-minus-noel. i'm not sold on this album, but i like this song quite a bit, so i thought i'd give it a spin.]
Dum Dum Girls - "Wrong Feels Right" [the lead track from the he gets me high EP. did anyone catch them in chapel hill on tuesday night?]
>
Twilight Singers - "She Was Stolen" [from dynamite steps. one of the interesting things about this album is the run of about three short (read: sub-three minutes) songs that come in the middle of the record. this is one of them and it hits hard, but i could've stood for this track to hang around a little longer.]
Butterflies - "Guitarist" [from residual child. we'll have josh kimbrough from butterflies on the show next week and he'll be playing some live music for us as well. looking forward to it.]
the Beastie Boys - "Shadrach" [from paul's boutique. i wrote a piece that went up on aquarium drunkard about this song that the numerous songs sampled within it. plus a bit of biblical talk as well. check it out.]
Sly and the Family Stone - "Loose Booty" [from small talk. this is the primary song sampled for "shadrach" and is quite an awesome song in its own right.]
>
the Decemberists - "Down by the Water" [from the king is dead. this record is continuing to grow on me. i think i'm definitely going to have to go see them on saturday, june 11th at the raleigh amphitheatre.]
the Damnwells - "Werewolves" [from no one listens to the band anymore. they'll be at kings in raleigh on tuesday, march 29th. they're great live if you've never seen them, so get on out there.]
the Joy Formidable - "Austere" [from last year's a balloon called moaning. they're going to be at duke coffeehouse on thursday, march 24th and i'm really excited to see that show. welsh band!]
Wye Oak - "Civilian" [the title track from their latest and they'll be at local 506 in chapel hill this saturday, march 12th.]
>
Telekinesis - "Please Ask for Help" [from the excellent 12 desperate straight lines. michael lerner and his power-trio version of telekinesis will be at local 506 this sunday, march 13th along with the love language. the show is sold out, but if you can get in, i'd advise it. it's going to be an awesome night of power pop.]
Marah - "It's Only Money, Tyrone" [from kids in philly. i think this album is going to get a write-up from me pretty soon. i never stop being amazed by the songwriting on this record.]
Greater Pacific - "Your History" [from the rainfall EP. i did a write up on this record over at aquarium drunkard. it's a gorgeous piece of songwriting, that's for sure.]
Paul Westerberg - "Whatever Makes You Happy" [from suicaine gratifaction. i did a long piece about this record over at aquarium drunkard this week and got a pretty positive response from it. i do really enjoy this album and think the story behind it is pretty interesting as well. take a read and let me know what you think.]
the Los Angeles Gospel Choir - "I Shall Be Released" [from the gospel according to dylan, a 1969 album of strictly gospel interpretations of the bard's music. this is one of my favorites, without question.]

That'll do it for this week. Tune in next week for my interview with Josh Kimbrough from Butterflies and more great new music. Until then, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 2nd March 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Sorry for the unexpected absence last week - a trip that was supposed to begin Thursday became a sudden Wednesday departure. Thanks to the able Steve-O of the Bits 'n' Pieces Show (Fridays, 8pm - 10pm) for filling in for me and making me receive several text messages where people praised what I was playing because they didn't know I wasn't there. Good call on playing some Thunderclap Newman, Steve.

Next week, we'll be joined by the fantastic Illicitizen from Charlotte on the show and, pending final confirmation, in two weeks, we'll be joined by Butterflies from Chapel Hill. I'm loving the interviews on the show this year. It's been such a treat to have so many great and diverse bands up.

Now, while the goin's good, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 2nd March 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Apex Manor - "Teenage Blood" [from the year of magical drinking. seriously, if this isn't bound for numerous summer mix tapes, what else could be?]
the Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner" [from their self-titled debut. mr. richman was in chapel hill at the end of last week and, sadly, i missed him.]
Smith Westerns - "All Die Young" [from dye it blonde. more off this awesome album. they'll be at kings in raleigh on friday, april 29th.]
Matthew Sweet - "Sick of Myself" [from 100% fun. the song that made me fall in love with this man's excelleng songcraft. ah, 8th grade.]
>
Yuck - "Get Away" [from their self-titled debut. i can't speak to the whole record yet, but this song tears me up. we'll hear more.]
Blur - "For Tomorrow" [from modern life is rubbish. i've been thinking a lot about blur lately. trying to suss out what their legacy as a band truly is and i'm not sure. i'm thinking maybe the lyrical comparisons to the kinks from this record and parklife maybe have been more broadly accurate in terms of their impact on music also. except, who was actually influenced by blur? who would we point to as being disciples of their style?]
David Lowry - "Baby, All Those Girls Meant Nothing To Me" [from the palace guards. cracker/camper van beethoven member lays on his new solo project. we'll undoubtedly hear some more.]
the Ramones - "Needles and Pins" [from road to ruin. a song written by none other than sonny bono. and of course it sounds perfectly at home with the ramones.]
>
the Twilight Singers - "On the Corner" [from dynamite steps. i'm still figuring out how i feel about this new album, but this is definitely one of the highlights. can't wait to see them at the cat's cradle on may 7th.]
Guadalcanal Diary - "Always Saturday" [from flip flop. had an impromptu theme come together tonight. love to pull this song out every now and then.]
Butterflies - "Sunday Afternoon" [from residual child. so here's what started it all. from their new album - hopefully singer josh kimbrough is going to be up on the show in two weeks. here's hoping.]
Wilco - "Monday" [from being there. so stonesy you should just let it bleed. har. but still, a great song. one of these days i'm going to do a whole show of days of the week songs.]
>
Cut Copy - "Take Me Over" [from zonoscope. i'm a bit infatuated with this record. so dancey and fun and just a lovely, lovely album. if you don't like infectious music, i'd stay away from this at all costs.]
the Minus 5 - "I'm Not Bitter" [from down with wilco. a classic from some classics. this record hasn't aged as well for me as i might have expected, but it's still quite excellent.]
Illicitizen - "To Arms" [from their self-titled record. the band that'll be on the show next week from down in the queen city.]
Deerhunter - "Memory Boy" [from halcyon digest. so they played this on letterman, apparently? not a bad job, guys. keep reppin' the south.]
>
Telekinesis - "Gotta Get It Right Now" [from 12 desperate straight lines. love this record and in case you didn't know, they'll be playing, along with the love language, at local 506 in chapel hill on sunday, may 13th. that show is sold. out.]
Dum Dum Girls - "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" [from he gets me high. a cover of the smiths' classic from the new EP. they'll be at local 506 on tuesday, march 8th.]
Wye Oak - "The Altar" [from civilian. haven't gotten a chance to soak this album up yet either, but the initial reviews are solid. they'll be at local 506 on saturday, march 12th. love this band.]
Lonnie Walker - "Wider than White" [from these times old times. they're one of the opening bands for future island's friday night show at kings in raleigh this week.]
>
Birds of Avalon - "Xarardhere" [from their self-titled album. love this song and this record. we'll continue to hear more. rock and roll is alive and kicking this year.]
Hammer No More the Fingers - "The Agency" [from black shark. more proof of rock being alive. especially here in north carolina.]
Lucinda Williams - "Cophenhagen" [from blessed. if you haven't already caught it, i did an interview with ms. williams the other week over at aquarium drunkard that is well worth reading. i'm loving the new album as well.]
the Damnwells - "She Goes Around" [from no one listens to the band anymore. they're going to be at kings in raleigh on tuesday, march 29th. i'm enjoying the new album a lot. i'm repeating myself a lot tonight. a lot.]
>
Drive-by Truckers - "I Do Believe" [from go-go boots. i'm behind on listening to things as i suppose this is about the hundredth album i've commented that i haven't given a full listen to yet. but yet, there i am again. patterson's singing sounds really off until the music comes in on this one. then it makes perfect sense.]
the Replacements - "Skyway" [from pleased to meet me. by request from long time listener and now fellow DJ frank. we bonded over the replacements a long time ago and it's still an easy request for me to fulfill.]
the Decemberists - "June Hymn" [from the king is dead.. i think this might just be one of the most beautiful songs i've heard in forever. i thought the chorus was sappy at first, but the song slowly reveals itself as one of beautiful vignettes, images and small odes. in short, it's perfect.]

That's going to do it for this week. We'll be back next week with the fine folks in Illicitizen live in-studio and lots more great new music. Until then, Go Heels!, and take care.
