J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 22nd June 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight's show hopefully makes up for one of the better shows of this year which those of you who listen solely to the podcast sadly missed out on: an interview and live performance with the Grand Ole Uproar. While that podcast from February was sadly lost into the ether, this show more than makes up for it as we went from the original interview with just two members playing live to a full-on five member take on a pair of the band's songs from their excellent new EP. It also marked the return of Emily Stewart to our show - we last had Emily up as a member of Matty Sheets and the Blockheads last October, but she returned this week to promote her own music as Emily Stewart and Baby Teeth. It's a great interview, three great live performances and all in all a great show. I hope you enjoy.

I'm off to Athens, Georgia this weekend for AthFest, so if any of you are Athens bound or Athens native, keep an eye out for me and say hi.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 22nd June 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Fucked Up - "Queen of Hearts" [from david comes to life. seriously going to be a contender for top ten album of the year, i think. i'm loving this.]
the Clash - "Janie Jones" [from their self-titled debut. sorry for the messed up sound through the first part of this one. some prior DJ left the CD player on "continued" play instead of "single" mode, so you got two songs instead of one for awhile.]
Battles - "Ice Cream" [from gloss drop. we'll hear more from this record, but i had to play this one again because it's too much fun.]
the Grand Ole Uproar - "Open Road" [from their self-titled EP.]

[Here's my interview with the members of the Grand Ole Uproar and Emily Stewart. GOU members Josh Watson and Derrick Kirkman returned from our original interview, but also brought along fiddle player Gracie Miller and banjo player Ian Pawlowski. Emily Stewart also sat in with them on both performances as well as playing her own solo song. The bands played together at the Blind Tiger here in Greensboro last night, so make sure you catch them out live sometime. Check out the interview and live performances as well. Too much fun, really.]

the Grand Ole Uproar with Emily Stewart - "Clumsy Tongue" (live) [a song from their self-titled EP and here done quite well. click here to take a listen.]
Emily Stewart - "Long Way Down" (live) [a song from emily's band. click here to take a listen.]
the Grand Ole Uproar with Emily Stewart - "Black Coffee" (live) [another song from their self-titled EP. click here to take a listen.]
>
the Grand Ole Uproar - "One Horse Town" [one more from the self-titled EP.]
Frank Turner - "I Am Disappeared" [from england keep my bones. so i purposefully gave lis a shoutout this week for her recommendation of the frank turner album. except i mispronounced her name, i'm fairly sure. that's what i get for only reading it and not saying it aloud often enough. thanks, lis!]
Del Amitri - "Always the Last to Know" [from change everything. heard this over the in-store stereo of a j.c. penny's and was itching to play it. one of my favorite del amitri songs.]
Five Eight - "Motorcycle" [from your god is dead to me now. they're going to be playing at athfest this week and i love the new album. we'll hear more.]
>
the Mekons - "Space in Your Face" [from the forthcoming ancient and modern. this is like, what, the fiftieth album of the mekons career? it's going to be out later this year and based on this song, honestly, i can't wait.]
Romeo Void - "Never Say Never" [from benefactor. of course you might remember the video for this, as it's the first time i remember hearing this band. just picked this up on vinyl the other week. good, new wave, post-punk times.]
the Rosebuds - "Cover Ears" [from loud planes fly low. more good stuff from the excellent new album from the rosebuds.]
the Mountain Goats - "The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton" [from all hail west texas. i hadn't played this song enough in a long time, so there you go. hail, satan, indeed.]
>
Sloan - "Unkind" [from the double cross. so how good is the new sloan album? enough so that, according to twitter, i inspired a listener to risk his life to download it. yeah, it's that good.]
that dog. - "Never Say Never" [from retreat from the sun. and the romeo void song inspired me to play my even more favorite song titled "never say never." oh, that dog. i miss you.]
Black Lips - "Go Out and Get It" [from arabia mountain. more fantastic garage rock from their latest.]
Paul Westerberg - "Postcards from Paradise" [by request. from stereo. a cover of flesh for lulu's classic originally from all hail the new flesh.]
>
the Roadside Graves - "Glory" [from we can take care of ourselves. their new record is, as i mentioned, a concept album based on s.e. hinton's the outsiders. good stuff so far. we'll hear a lot more.]
That Petrol Emotion - "Non Alignment Pact" (live) [from that petrol emotion live. a cover of the pere ubu classic originally from their album the modern dance.]
the Builders and the Butchers - "Rotten to the Core" [from dead reckoning. i'll be honest - i'm not as big on this band as others at the station are currently, but maybe i'm just not hearing the right tracks. any suggestions?]
Fountains of Wayne - "Barbara H." [from their self-titled debut. this makes three weeks in a row playing songs from this album, but you know what? i hadn't played anything from this record in quite some time and if you've never listend to all of it, you're missing out.]
>
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "Stopping By" [from here we rest. more good stuff from the latest isbell record. will hopefully be seeing him in athens this weekend as well.]
Fleet Foxes - "Helplessness Blues" [the title track from their latest. a really beautiful song if i do say so myself.]

That'll do it for this week. My thanks again to the Grand Ole Uproar and Emily Stewart for coming by. Do try to catch them live if they come to your neck of the woods. Until next week, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 15th June 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. It's becoming a bit more random when we do this, but Ryan Snyder from YES Weekly stopped in again for this month's J's Indie/Rock Roundtable. We talked about new albums from the Rosebuds and Bon Iver and Ryan's recent trip out to Bonnaroo. All in all a good time and some great music, too.

Next week on the show we're going to be revisited by members of the Grand Ole Uproar who were with us back in early February. Sadly that show didn't record and those great live performances were lost into the ether. They'll be back next week along with members of Emily Stewart and Baby Teeth to talk about a show they have coming up next Wednesday at the Blind Tiger as well as play some live songs and give us a taste of what they're all about. Really looking forward to it as the last interview was a hoot.

Now, before the milk gets spilt, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 15th June 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Fucked Up - "Ship of Fools" [from the new david comes to life which is absolutely stunning, to be honest. we'll be hearing a lot more from what is almost certainly bound for my year-end best-of list.]
the Replacements - "Kids Don't Follow" [from stink. just got done watching the new replacements documentary color me obsessed and i'm going to talk a lot more about that soon. so expect a lot of 'mats music in the weeks to come. as if you don't already..]
Black Lips - "Modern Art" [from the new arabia mountain. we'll be hearing more. this is a band i've sat on for too long, honestly.]
the Stranglers - "No More Heroes" [by request. the title track from their 1977 album. always gotta love having people call up and request the stranglers. good call, man.]

[Here's where Ryan Snyder and I broke out the Indie/Rock Roundtable again to discuss new releases from the Rosebuds, Loud Planes Fly Low, and Bon Iver's self-titled sophomore album. We also talked about his exploits at Bonnaroo and other upcoming summer festivals of note. A great time - so take a listen and see what we thought about the new albums.]

the Rosebuds - "Go Ahead" [from loud planes fly low.]
the Rosebuds - "Woods" [from loud planes fly low.]
Bon Iver - "Calgary" [from bon iver.]
Bon Iver - "Towers" [from bon iver.]
>
Battles - "Sweetie and Shag" [from the really astounding gloss drop which I am all about after getting my ears on it. we'll be hearing a lot more.]
Frank Black - "Los Angeles" [from his self-titled solo debut. thoughts on your favorite frank black solo records? i first heard him solo when teenager of the year came out and the lovely "headache" was all over 120 minutes, but i've also, ashamedly, never picked that record up.]
the Beastie Boys - "Nonstop Disco Powerpack" [another new one from hot sauce committee part 2. i'm feeling it. it's just good to have them back.]
Track a Tiger - "Glad to be Scattered" [from woke up early the day i died. this was one of my absolutely favorite singles of 2006 and it still bowls me over listening to it. just a note perfect song.]
>
the Roadside Graves - "Double Feature" [from the forthcoming we can take care of ourselves, a vinyl release on autumn tone records which is also a concept album centered around s.e. hinton's the outsiders. i love roadside graves. so. much.]
Pulp - "Razzamatazz" [by request. from intro: the gift recordings, this song also shows up as an unlisted bonus track on the u.s. version of his 'n' hers. really one of my favorite pulp songs of all time.]
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "Alabama Pines" [from here we rest. i'll admit that i kind of slept on this album because i was so underwhelmed by the last isbell album. i'm rethinking it after giving this song a listen. we'll hear more.]
Bash and Pop - "Tiny Pieces" [from fright night is killing me, the one and only record by this band, tommy stinson's first project post-replacements. it really is one of the best post-replacements projects by any of the members and it's a really tremendous album. worth hunting down as it is way, way out of print.]
>
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - "Senator" [from the forthcoming mirror traffic which will be out in august. this lead single is, really, pretty fantastic. you can grab it over at aquarium drunkard and take a listen.]
the Dream Syndicate - "That's What You Always Say" [from the days of wine and roses. really, people. if you don't own this record, you don't really like guitar rock and roll. and if you've never heard it, get on it.]
Frank Turner - "Peggy Sang the Blues" [from england keep my bones. this was a twitter recommendation from long-time listener lis over in glasgow, scotland. we'll be hearing a lot more as i'm quite digging it. thanks, lis!]
Fountains of Wayne - "Survival Car" [from their self-titled debut. told you i'd play "survival car" this week! love it.]
Jellyfish - "All I Want is Everything" [from their 1990 debut bellybutton. i was drawn into this band by listening so some of member jason falkner's solo work and it's pretty amazing psych-influenced early 90s, major label pop music. ah, the time when all manner of odd people could get major label deals. those were the days. well worth hearing.]

That's going to do it for this week. Join me next week for live talk and music from the Grand Ole Uproar and Emily Stewart and Baby Teeth. Until then, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 8th June 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I'm back in my normal 6pm - 8pm on Wednesday slot, though I will also be sitting in for the 5 o'clock Democracy Now slow during the summer as well. You won't hear me on the air during that time, but I'll be at the station all the same getting stuff set up for the regular show.

This week's show was a lot of fun and is a pretty great slab of things, both new and old, so let's get to it. Onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 8th June 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Battles - "Ice Cream" [from gloss drop, their latest which dropped this week. the video for this song is, well, pretty unique. well worth watching. and i'm digging the song.]
Hammer No More the Fingers - "Shark" [from black shark. i guess it might be about time to retire this record for now, but i'm telling you, keep an ear out for this on my end-of-the-year list for sure.]
Wye Oak - "Civilian" [the title track from their latest. another album bound for the best-of year end list.]
the Didjits - "Gold Eldorado" [from hornet pinata. if you have never listened to the didjits, you should. if you did and didn't like them, try again. if you did and do like them, good job.]
>
My Morning Jacket - "Holdin on to Black Metal" [from circuital. i'll be honest. i've been kind of lukewarm on MMJ for awhile. at dawn is my favorite album of theirs and nothing since, especially the last two albums, have grabbed me as well. this song, however, may go a long way to changing my mind. we'll hear more.]
the Beastie Boys - "Tadlock's Glasses" [from hot sauce committee part two. we're going to hear more from the first new non-instrumental beasties record in..what..7 years? but this is a nice beginning.]
the Clash - "Rudy Can't Fail" [by request. from london calling. a couple of requests from the twitter and this one specifically requested in order to be a pick-me-up. understandable.]
the Plimsouls - "Everyday Things" [by request. from their 1981 self-titled debut. i need to dig into some more plimsouls as i've only ever listened to everywhere at once, but this is a good start.]
>
Fucked Up - "Running on Nothing" [from their new david comes to life. so the reviews of this new record have been nothing short of glowing and my initial (shallow) listens have been really good. we'll hear a lot more i'm sure.]
Super Deluxe - "She Came On" [from famous. one of my favorite 90s one-hit wonders. just a great power-pop song.]
Kurt Vile - "Baby's Arms" [from smoke rings for my halo. an album i still need to spend a lot more time with, for sure, but really good.]
the Mountain Goats - "This Year" [by request from the sunset tree. sadly i didn't have my copy of the new album with me, but at least i could put on one of my favorite old mountain goats songs to give the caller a taste of the band.]
>
the Raveonettes - "Forget That You're Young" [from raven in the grave. i've enjoyed the raveonettes from their first album, but i also sort of checked-out on them for awhile. 2009's in and out of control changed that, though, as it was packed with awesome songs and damn if this new one isn't the same.]
Vic Chesnutt - "Degenerate" [from about to choke. this song was one of the first to truly draw me into chesnutt's work.]
Art Brut - "Is Dog Eared" [from brilliant! tragic! a little long for radio play, but one of the best from the new album, for sure.]
Daniel Hutchens - "Underground Cafe, 1923" [from love songs for losers. this was the first record released on aquarium drunkard's autumn tone record label and it still holds up as a great set of songs from the bloodkin frontman.]
>
Bon Iver - "Perth" [from the self-titled sophomore album that dropped this week. check out my review over at aquarium drunkard.]
Beth Orton - "She Cries Your Name" [from trailer park. my mind wanders all over the place with my music knowledge sometime and my tweet during this song is reflective of that, though i was somewhat off. i thought i remembered william orbit working on this album - electronic flourishes and all - but really he just worked with beth orton on some one-off things around the same time. still - electronic music as the 'next big thing' in the 90s still seems odd.]
Steve Earle - "Meet Me in the Alleyway" [from i'll never get out of this world alive. i know i played this last week, but since the podcast didn't work, i thought i'd fire it up again.]
Fountains of Wayne - "Radiation Vibe" [from their self-titled debut. hadn't played anything off this record in awhile. next week, "survival car!" they have a new album dropping in august. exciting.]
>
the Felice Brothers - "Fire at the Pageant" [from celebration, florida. the lead track and probably the best radio single, but i'm digging this album. i like new directions.]
the Emergency - "Hey Whoopy Cat" [from doo-lang doo-lang. oh, power-pop west virginians, how i do miss thee.]
the Damnwells - "Kiss Catastrophe" [from bastards of the beat. going back to their debut for a bit of power-pop delight. okay. i've used the phrase power-pop too much tonight. i'm done.]
the Rosebuds - "Second Bird of Paradise" [from loud planes fly low. enjoying the new record. my review of it will be up at aquarium drunkard next week along with an interview with the band.]
>
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "Belong" [the title track from their latest. man. i loved their debut a lot, but this new one is tremendous. we'll keep hearing more.]
Slim Dunlap - "Girlfriend" [from times like this, his second solo record. i need to write these up for aquarium drunkard sometime. great albums both.]
Fleet Foxes - "Lorelai" [from helplessness blues. one of the bands i'm most looking forward to seeing at the pitchfork festival in july. can't even imagine what this stuff is like live.]
Greater Pacific - "Your History" [from rainfall. lovely stuff from members of the excellent travel by sea.]
Thurston Moore - "Illuminine" [from demolished thoughts. another great song from a great album which i reviewed last week.]

That'll do it for J's Indie/Rock Mayhem this week. I'll be back next week with Ryan Snyder of YES Weekly, freshly returned from the trenches of Bonnaroo, to talk about a couple of new albums and his experiences at the fest. Until then, take care.

J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 1st June 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Sadly, my USB did a number on me tonight and so there is no podcast. A bummer as this was a pretty righteous show, if I do say so myself. Hopefully things will be sorted out for next week. Apologies.

We'll be starting the summer semester schedule next week and though I should have my normal slot, there's always a chance, so be on the lookout here for any changes. If you don't hear anything, everything is normal.

Now, while we can, onward.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Apex Manor - "Under the Gun" [from the year of magical drinking. can not wait to see these guys opening for jonny at the cat's cradle on june 14th. they're also playing at the hopscotch festival in september, so two awesome chances to catch this awesome band.]
Paul Westerberg - "Who You Gonna Marry?" [from 49:00. this record really does stand alongside stereo/mono in my opinion. great late period westerberg.]
Dum Dum Girls - "Wrong Feels Right" [from the he gets me high EP. i'm enjoying this band more and more with each release.]
Johnny Darrell - "Why You Been Gone So Long" [the title track from his 1969 album. a track i picked up off of an oxford american sampler about six or seven years ago. really awesome rock and roll.]
>
Art Brut - "Clever Clever Jazz" [from their latest, brilliant! tragic! this record, like their last, was produced by frank black. i'm already a bit higher on this one than the last, but eddie argos singing? something i'll have to get used to.]
the Plimsouls - "A Million Miles Away" [by request. from everywhere at once. julie wanted to hear another track by the band and maybe we'll dig that up for next week, but at least i was able to put them on at all.]
Butterflies - "Sunday Afternoon" [from residual child. they'll be playing this friday at the garage in winston-salem along with fellow mayhem guest alumns caleb caudle and the bayonets and jon lindsay.]
the B-52's - "52 Girls" [from their self-titled debut. this is what post punk sounded like in a lot of ways. still one of the best albums of the era.]
>
Fleet Foxes - "Sim Sala Bim" [from helplessness blues. this record, like most of fleet foxes stuff for me, is a slow grower. but only because radio singles don't jump out at me. the album is gorgeous though.]
Dave Edmunds - "Readers Wives" [from tracks on wax 4. picked this up at the nice price books in raleigh yesterday and, needless to say, i'm excited.]
Lucinda Williams - "Convince Me" [from blessed. i'm big on this record still. i don't know if it'll end up on my top 25 list, but this track will probably make the best singles show.]
that dog. - "Minneapolis" [from retreat from the sun. one of my favorite that dog songs. there's really not a bad album in this group's oeuvre. seriously.]
>
Okkervil River - "Rider" [from i am very far. one of the standout radio tracks from this album no doubt.]
Jarvis Cocker - "Further Complications" [from his sophomore solo record. pulp played their first show together in nearly a decade last week. here's hoping for an american tour, eh, jarvis?]
Thurston Moore - "Circulation" [from demolished thoughts which you can read my review of over at aquarium drunkard. really solid album.]
R.E.M. - "Begin the Begin" [from life's rich pageant. dug this album out this week thinking of "swan swan h" and ended up listening to the whole thing again.]
>
the Rosebuds - "Come Visit Me" [from loud planes fly low, their latest, which will be dropping next week on merge records. if you're a rosebuds fan, there's a lot to enjoy.]
Josh Rouse - "Feeling No Pain" [from under cold blue stars. i've been wearing my old shirt for this album a lot lately and got to thinking about how much i still love it. sadly, my opinion about josh's most recent records haven't followed suit.]
Hammer No More the Fingers - "It's About Caring" [from black shark. saw these guys tear it up last friday night at the garage in winston-salem along with jews and catholics. seriously one of the tightest live shows i've seen in some time. this song was my standout fave.]
Dwight Yoakam - "Streets of Bakersfield" [from buenos noches from a lonely room. this duet with buck owens is pretty awesome - of course yoakam is a big bakersfield country devotee.]
>
the Felice Brothers - "Refrain" [from celebration, florida. the new felice brothers is a piece of work for old fans. very different, but really rewarding, i think.]
Spacehog - "Mungo City" [from the chinese album. few people seem to remember spacehog anymore, but i'm telling you, their first two albums are dynamite.]
Ty Segall - "The Slider" [a cover of the t. rex classic from his record store day 12" record. you can take a listen over at aquarium drunkard.]
the Fabulous Thunderbirds - "My Babe" [from their 1982 album t-bird rhythm. this was chosen by my trainee for the evening, ann, who ought to have a show this summer. great job tonight, ann.]
>
Phil Cook and his Feat - "Ballad of a Hungry Mother" [the title track from the debut solo album by phil cook of megafaun. really gorgeous instrumental stuff.]
Steve Earle - "Meet Me in the Alleyway" [from i'll never get out of this world alive. very tom waits sounding, if you ask me. i dig it.]
the Streets - "Sharp Darts" [from original pirate material. you can always tell when i need an awesome sub-2 minute song. this one comes out and kills it.]
Gil Scott-Heron - "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" [from pieces of a man. the closing part of the show was a tribute to the late gil scott-heron who passed away last week at the age of 62. a giant in music and spoken-word poetry, it's impossible to truly measure the influence the man had, especially on socially conscious hip-hop. this first piece is from his second album from 1971.]
Gil Scott-Heron - "Me and the Devil" [from i'm new here, release in 2010. this is a remake of robert johnson's "me and the devil blues" and it smokes. this was a tremendous record and though it pains me to have lost him, scott-heron went out on a massively high artistic note. rest in peace, gil, and thank you.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next week with more new and classic music. Thanks for listening and until then, take care.
