J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 9th November 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I had the 3/4ths of the fantastic Bombadil stop by and play some songs and talk about their new record, All That the Rain Promises. It was a fantastic show and I greatly appreciated them coming by.

Surfer Blood - "Miranda" [from tarot classics. got to see these guys open for the pixies this past week here in greensboro. good show, though the big auditorium atmosphere didn't compliment their sound well. catch these guys in a club, i'd say.]
Morphine - "Murder for the Money" [from like swimming. ah, morphine. one of the more truly unique sounding bands of the 90s. we miss you, sandman.]
Fountains of Wayne - "Someone's Gonna Break Your Heart" [from sky full of holes. i had sworn off this song until the end of the year, but i had to as i just found out that the band will be playing at the cat's cradle in carborro on saturday, february 11th. very excited.]
Silver Jews - "Strange Victory, Strange Defeat" [from lookout mountain, lookout sea. a shame that this guy hung it up.]

M83 - "Reunion" [from the excellent hurry up, we're dreaming. this is what i call great pop music. we'll hear more.]
Elastica - "Car Song" [from their self-titled debut. still, far and away, one of my favorite records of the 90s.]
Tom Waits - "Satisfied" [from bad as me. check out the fantastic video for this song. really one of the best from the new album.]
Paul Chastain - "Halo" [the title track from this 1985 EP. paul chastain is, of course, best known as a member of the velvet crush, another favorite band of this show's.]

Big Troubles - "She Smiles For Pictures" [from romantic comedy. i should probably hang up this record for awhile. bound for year-end best-of.]
John Prine - "Paradise" [from his self-titled debut. prine has a new collection of early demos from this time period, the singing mailman delivers, that is a nice collection of work from this time period as well.]
P.G. Six - "Palace" [from starry mind. this is a record i've been struggling with a bit. it doesn't quite take off enough, but i'm telling you, the last 2 or 3 minutes of this song are worth the slow pace of the beginning.]
the Flying Burrito Brothers - "Sin City" [from the gilded palace of sin. my parsons kick continues.]

Beirut - "East Harlem" [from their latest, the rip tide. beirut will be at the cat's cradle on thursday, december 8th, and man, they are seriously one of the best live shows i've ever seen, so get on it.]
the Clean - "Big Soft Punch" [originally from 1990's vehicle it's also from merge records' excellent 2003 anthology. a new zealand band you definitely need to hear if you have not.]
Dum Dum Girls - "Coming Down" [from the excellent only in dreams. get this album.]
X - "Soul Kitchen" [from los angeles, their cover of the doors. helped that ray manzarek was producing the album. i have another doors cover up for next week and it's a doozy.]

Future Islands - "The Great Fire" [from on the water. really enjoying this record the more i listen to it.]
Midnight Oil - "My Country" [from earth and sun and moon. i miss midnight oil. wish i'd gotten to see them live at some point.]
Male Bonding - "Tame the Sun" [from endless now. probably one of my favorite singles of this year. no doubt.]

They have a new record out called All That the Rain Promises and we talked about that, their unexpected hiatus the other year, working on Ramseur Records and they played a few great songs for us as well. [Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. A fantastic show, chock full of good stuff, so I hope you enjoy. Next week, I should be graced by the presence of Durham, North Carolina's Bombadil. They'll be stopping in to play a few tunes from their new album, All That the Rain Promises, which is out next week. It'll be great to finally have them stop in and should be a good time.

Crooked Fingers - "Typhoon" [by request. from the new breaks in the armor. a pretty solid outing from bachmann and company.]
the Darkness - "Black Shuck" [from permission to land. i pulled this album out for the first time in awhile this week and couldn't help myself. it's a really, thoroughly enjoyable rock and roll album.]
St. Vincent - "Cheerleader" [from strange mercy. really enjoying this album and over at the av club's new one track mind feature this week, annie clark performs "surgeon" also from the new album. check it out.]
the International Submarine Band - "Luxury Liner" [from safe at home. i told you to expect a full-blown assault of parsons. so here you go. more and there will be more, no doubt.]

Real Estate - "Younger than Yesterday" [from days. a perfect follow up to parsons considering he had a stint in the byrds and this song shares its name with a byrds album. not one parsons played on, but come on, allow me to stretch a bit.]
Pulp - "A Little Soul" [from this is hardcore. seriously one of the best songs jarvis has written and i love it. pulp (and jarvis solo) were always good at grabbing bits of songs and making them something different. this one uses "tracks of my tears" to great effect.]
Richmond Fontaine - "The Chainsaw Sea" [from the high country. we should hear more off of this as it sounds pretty good.]
Jurassic 5 - "Day at the Races" [from power in numbers. i always really enjoyed this song. any song usually benefits from big daddy kane and percy p guest spots anyway.]

the King Khan Experience - "Hammer Ich Vermisse Dich" [from the new self-titled EP. this is a cover of the late jay reatard's "hammer i miss you." a tribute to khan's late friend.]
Lou Reed - "Vicious" [from transformer. in the wake of the release of reed and metallica's lulu this week (which chuck klosterman took on in epic fashion), i wanted to remind us of reasons we like lou reed. i think we need reminding.]
Sandro Perri - "Changes" [from the really excellent invisible spaces. this is an album you seriously need to track down. not much makes me eager to play 7+ minute songs on the show, so there you go.]
XTC - "Respectable Street" [the lead track from black sea. xtc is a music geeks band, isn't it? shouldn't they be more well known than they are? just a question.]

Frightened Rabbit - "Scottish Winds" [from the new a frightened rabbit EP which you can download for free online. go get it.]
the B-52's - "Planet Claire" [from their self-titled debut. kate pierson of the band did an interview with the av club this week where she talked about a litany of classic 52's tracks. go take a read.]
Dare Dukes - "Meet You at the Bus" [from the forthcoming thugs and china dolls. dare is hopefully coming our way early next year and we'll be hearing more on the show in the coming months leading up to the album release.]
Josh Ritter - "Lawrence, KS" [from the golden age of radio. it's so amazing to go back and listen to this album now and hear how ritter has progressed as a singer. and for the better. he's still a bit wobbly and over-emotive on this and his self-titled debut, but starting with the next record, he hit his marks and never looked back.]

Tom Waits - "Kiss Me" [from the excellent bad as me. reminds me of blue valentines-era waits and that is never a bad thing.]
Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise - "Once Upon a Time" [from their self-titled record. this was a buzz bin video on mtv back in the day and i'm still totally entranced by this song. the record isn't as amazing, though it has its high points, but this song is still an awesome part of my growing up.]
Bombadil - "Laundromat" [from the forthcoming all that the rain promises. looking forward to having these guys on next week.]
Track a Tiger - "Glad to Be Scattered" [from woke up early the day i died. i believe this was my number one single track of 2006. still just an incredible song.]

Class Actress - "Weekend" [from rapproacher. enjoying this record quite a bit so far and this is a great friday song.]
Phonte - "Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" [from charity starts at home. not one of the songs that ryan and i played in reviewing this record last week, but it's one of my favorites from the album.]
Portishead - "Magic Doors" [from my number one album of 2008, third. hate that their recent u.s. tour didn't bring them anywhere around here, but that's living in the south for you.]
