j's indie/rock mayhem - 5th october 2005
[tonight was a really great show. tons of calls, lots of requests and some great, great music. a brief reminder: i will not be here next week as i'll be up seeing my man, josh ritter, play in carborro at the cat's cradle opening for the frames. as of right now, chuck and kim (thurs. 6p-8p and 10p-12a respectively) will be filling in for me. and, fittingly enough, i'm covering kim's show tomorrow night from 10p-12a so tune in for me being totally random and possibly playing some classic album in its entirety. we'll see. in the meantime, onward.]

Greg Dulli - "Cigarettes" ["take the wheel/let's go for a ride/if you're trouble/then i'll follow you down." oh, greg. there's something about dulli's words that make me shiver and feel like i could be as cool as him. and while that's physically impossible, one likes to dream. from his excellent new album, amber headlights.]
Pavement - "Date with Ikea" [i can only assume that this was inspired by a trip shopping for oddly shaped (and oddly comfortable) swedish furniture. but i don't know. one of the definite highlights, though, from the amazing brighten the corners.]
Michael Penn - "Seen the Doctor" [by request. caller wanted to hear something from penn's album march, but failing to have it I went with this excellent song from his free-for-all album instead. he will be playing at the carborro arts center next wednesday night, october 12th.]
the Tragically Hip - "Poets" ["don't tell me what the poets are doing." really. who cares? maybe gordon's feeling a bit competitive. he did put out that collection of his poetry back in 2000 or so. anyway, phantom power is one of my very favorite tragically hip albums and this song is an awesome lead track.]

Josh Ritter - "Kathleen" [this is the man i'm going to see next week. from his 2004 album hello starling. josh ritter is an increasingly sharp and sophisticated songwriter who really floors me. his new album will be out in the spring, so if you want a preview, the show next week is just the place. you can download a sample of his new work by clicking here.]
Eric B. and Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke" [classic, golden-age hip-hop from the legendary duo and the immaculate masterpiece paid in full.]
Liz Phair - "Big Strong Man" [from whitechocolatespaceegg. listen. i don't care how badly she wants to sell records and still be doing what she wants. when you make a handful of records like this one and exile in guyville in particular, radically shifting gears isn't the smart thing to do. maybe she's making more money with her first top 40 hit from the last album and all, but jeez, what a price to pay. her new album is out this week but frankly i couldn't give a damn.]
The The - "This Is the Day" [i'm glad i've stopped seeing that dockers commercial where this is the theme music. do i really need matt johnson selling me khaki pants? no. but it did make me laugh. from 1983's soul mining.]

Blackalicious - "Black Diamonds and Pearls" [okay. i sort of take back what i said last week. the craft is growing on me. it's a better record than my initial listen had me thinking it was. we'll see how it holds up over time. this song is right tremendous though, no matter how i feel.]
Make Believe - "Amscaredica" [by request. this band features tim kinsella (ex-cap n' jazz and the promise ring) and is okay. not a terrible song but not anything that really catches my ear. good guitar work though. there's talent in it. from their newest album, shock of being.]
Orange Juice - "Tender Object" [scottish pop of the highest order from edwin collins' ex-band. the early 80s were a heyday for sharp, jangly guitar pop on both sides of the atlantic and the scots were definitely not left out in the cold. from the excellent new early-singles collection the glasgow school.]
the New Pornographers - "Jackie, Dressed in Cobras" [from the just plain awesome twin cinema. sadly the show at the cat's cradle on sunday october 16th has sold out. who wants to be the best QFS listener ever and give me a pair of tickets? anyone? bueller?]

Supergrass - "St. Petersberg" [one of the loveliest songs i've ever heard the boys peform, even if it's twinging with melancholy the whole way through. this is off their excellent new album road to rouen.]
Bob Mould - "See a Little Light" [by request. a single we have in the station but originally from bob's first post-husker du solo album workbook. a really, really great song if you ask me.]
Brian Ritchie - "Religion Ruined My Life" [by request. from his solo album i see a noise. brian is a former member of the violent femmes and it shows in the quirky-americana-collage of his music. not bad.]
the Louvin Brothers - "There's a Higher Power" [and after that depressing song about religion ruining someone's life, i figured it best to turn to the louvins for an uplifting sing-a-long. from the quite, quite good satan is real.]

Wolf Parade - "Shine a Light" [okay, so this is the band of the moment it seems. with issac brock (modest mouse) behind the production board, we've got yet another montreal band (to join broken social scene and the arcade fire and others) to enter the fray and i have to say it's...pretty good. at least this song is. from apologies to queen mary.]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Jam" [from 1990's pale. i'll readily admit my deep love for toad and very, very, very closely behind their 1994 album dulcinea, pale is my favorite toad record. one of these days i will compose a very eloquent defense for why it should be considered one of the best college rock records of the 90s. toad was still developing as a band but they were definitely hitting on all cylinders and this record is a goldmine of powerful tunes.]
the Finks - "Heat Rises" [from their debut exit the planet. this winston band will be playing this sunday, october 9th, at a benefit show for john bumgardner, a staple of the winston music scene who has suffered some serious medical bills. the show is free but donations are welcome. it's from 2pm - 10pm at the millenium center. i hear there will be good beer as well. also a silent auction, etc.]
Autopassion - "Tim is Dead" [from their album is a tedious disguise. they will also be playing sunday at the benefit show.]

Nada Surf - "Always Love" [this song is so close to being sappy it kills me, but it's the great vocals and overall song quality that save it. god these guys are good. from their latest the weight is a gift.]
the Decemberists - "16 Military Wives" [by request. from the excellent picaresque. mark, from up on the blue ridge (i swear i want to see his radio receiver one day - it has to be bigger than our broadcast tower), wanted to here something snarkily subversive. so there we go.]
Jurassic 5 - "Freedom" [from the excellent power in numbers. jurassic 5 tore it up at wake forest last night. if you'd like to read my review of the show, scan down or click here. this song was one of the high points. fists in air. chanting for freedom.]
Steve Earle - "My Uncle" (live) [earle's dead on version of the byrds' classic skewering of the vietnam draft. "vancouver might be just my kind of town." indeed. from sidetracks.]

Iron and Wine/Calexico - "History of Lovers" [this would be the one song on the EP with any curse words in it. so i just have to pay closer attention. from the most excellent in the reins EP. would that these guys collaborate again sometime.]
Josh Rouse - "A Forest" (live) [from the radio promo cd beyond cold blue stars. that EP contains a few re-mixes of the song "under cold blue stars" from the album of the same name, plus a handful of live cuts. this cover of the cure's classic song is fantastic. and since this is a radio promo cd and not for sale anywhere, we're going to try a new feature this week and see how it goes: if you'd like to download the song, click here.]
Cat Stevens - "Miles From Nowhere" [from tea for the tillerman. it was also on the soundtrack (and in the movie) for harold and maude. great classic stevens.]

sadly, no. charlotte (which is actually more or less where i'm originally from), is about 30 or 40 miles too far south to get us. in order to pick up qfs, you more or less have to live in the triad reigion of NC (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Burlington area) which is about a 40 miles radius. sorry.
