J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 6th March 2013

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Sorry to say that due to technical mishaps, last week's episode with Caleb Caudle and Haley Dreis is lost to the ether. Bummed, as their live performances were great.

Thankfully that did not happen this week as I was joined by the legendary Chris Stamey. Chris has a new album, Lovesick Blues, out on Yep Roc and is playing the 7th installment of the Crossroads series at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem this Saturday, March 9th. He'll be playing along with his band, the Fellow Travelers, a 20 piece orchestra and rock band, and performing Lovesick Blues in its entirety along with some extra bits. We talk about that and a lot more - and have Chris play some live songs - all in the show below, so check it out and enjoy.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 6th March 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Josh Ritter - "New Lover" [from his latest, the beast in its tracks which just came out this week. i am very much digging this record so far, so we'll be hearing more. can't wait to see him at the cat's cradle in may, either.]
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - "Blank Generation" [the title track from their 1978 debut. still just killer. and only the first of two songs featuring the late, great robert quine on guitar in the show tonight.]
the Men - "Half Angel Half Light" [from their third album, new moon, which just dropped this week. kind of a bit of a different sonic tack for the men. i like it. we'll hear more.]
Chris Stamey - "You n Me n XTC" [from his new album lovesick blues.]

[Here is where the interview begins and Chris and I talk about all manner of things including the new record, the show at SECCA, the Big Star Third tributes he helped plan, working with Megafaun, letting us here some of the standalone string tracks from the title track and playing a couple of songs live for us. Enjoy.]

Chris Stamey - "Astronomy" (live) [a live performance of one of the tracks off the new album. click here to check it out on its own.]
Chris Stamey - "Occasional Shivers" (live) [another live performance of a track from the new album. click here to check it out on its own.]
>
Chris Stamey - "Lovesick Blues" [the title track from his new album.]
Mount Moriah - "Eureka Springs" [from miracle temple, which we reviewed over on the show a few weeks back. i'm enjoying the album. is it going to grow on me? we'll see.]
Lou Reed - "Waves of Fear" [from the blue mask. hey! it's the other robert quine song. see. and you thought i was lying.]
Frightened Rabbit - "State Hospital" [from their excellent new album pedestrian verse. very, very good stuff.]
>
Estrangers - "Love's Pure Light" [from the as-yet-untitled estrangers album which will be out in may. you can grab this track for free right now off their bandcamp page however.]
the Posies - "Dream All Day" [from frosting on the beater which is still just too absurdly great an album. just sayin'.]
Night Beds - "Ramona" [from country sleep. i can't keep this song out of my head. it's so ridiculously good. best-singles show bound for 2013, for sure.]
Del Amitri - "The Return of Maggie Brown" [from lousy with love, their b-sides collection. this is an early track, but one of their more fun ones on this collection. the rest of the album is loaded with great songs, but mostly maudlin, down tempo songs.]
>
Son Volt - "Bakersfield" [from the new album honky tonk which is really quite excellent. if you threw away son volt some time ago...might be time to re-engage.]
School of Fish - "King of the Dollar" [from their self-titled debut. the little "satisfaction" call out in this song is so obvious, it's brilliant.]
Birds and Arrows - "Safety" [from coyotes off the north carolina band's newest album. pretty good.]
Youth Lagoon - "Third Dystopia" [from their new album wondrous bughouse. i had to stretch a little to find singles on this album, but it's a great listen as a whole. really worth seeking out if you like this track.]

That'll do it for this week. My thanks again to Chris Stamey for stopping in and talking with us. Next week, I promise, just two solid hours of music - three weeks in a row with guests is a bit overwhelming - awesome, but overwhelming. So until then, take care.

Digging the Mount Moriah. To me it sounded like the Velvets covering one of the albums from Dylan's Christian trilogy with Dolly Parton subbing for Nico on vox.

When you teased a second song with Robert Quine, I thought for sure it was going to be from Girlfriend. You missed out on giving us three.

Really enjoyed the interview with Chris Stamey.

I'm really digging "Ramona" as well. It's right up there with Josh Ritter's "Joy To You Baby," Phosphorescent's "Song For Zula," and Villagers' "Nothing Arrived" for my favorite songs this year.

I'm sure you've played School of Fish before but it really hit me this time out. Going to have to check out that album.

The sound is better than it was but still has bursts of static and at times feels like the radio dial is off slightly, as if we were listening at 91.0 instead of 90.9.
