j's indie/rock mayhem (extra long) - 17th/18th october 2003

[so things got really weird at the station tonight. tons of phone calls. click on that link if you're interested in that mess. otherwise this was my next to last temp schedule show. i bumped up a slot since the normal 10pm - 12am guy is gone on break. so i did an extra long, three and a half hour show tonight. i think it was mighty fun. i'll be on again tomorrow from 4pm - 6pm]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Blur - "Crazy Beat" [from their excellent new album, think tank]
the Pixies - "The Holiday Song" [i mis named this as "nimrod's son" on the air. woops. that's what i get for not having liner notes with me]
Division of Laura Lee - "You Need to Get Some"
the Lemonheads - "It's a Shame About Ray" [this song is just phenominal]
>
Q and Not U - "Book of Flags" [from their new 7" single. their new album is due out later this fall. very good]
the Flaming Lips - "Turn It On" [classic lips from transmissions from the satellite heart]
Sugar - "Favorite Thing"
Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies - "Sloop John B" [by request. for the most part i hate just about anything associated with post-1995 west coast punk, but at least they picked a great beach boys song to cover.]
Superchunk - "The Majestic"
>
Josh Ritter - "Kathleen" [with the great lyric: "all the other girls here are stars / you are the northern lights." josh, you old romancer, you]
The Replacements - "Talent Show"
The Undertones - "Teenage Kicks"
Sleater-Kinney - "Dig Me Out" [okay, so it's only been about a year but they really need to get a new record out, pronto]
>
Teenage Fanclub - "Ain't That Enough" [a gorgeous song from their new greatest hits album, originally from songs from northern britain. hint: they're scottish]
Jay Farrar - "Heart on the Ground"
Ween - "The Argus" [by request. normally i'm not a big ween fan, but this song was alright. from their new one, quebec]
Richard Buckner - "Lovin' Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)" [a fantastic cover of a fantastic kristofferson song from the nothing left to lost tribute album]
>
The Vinyl Gem - Gothic Hut - "Parasitic Twin" [the vinyl gem is something i've resurrected. the ploy is this: i go into QFS's vinyl stacks, pick out something i've never heard of and have no earthly clue what it sounds like, slap it on the air and let people vote on whether it's good for not. sometimes it's just kind of boring and mediocre. sometimes the song turns out to be really good. then there are nights like tonight, when we strike gold. this song was hilarious. intentionally or not, it was a glorious find.]
Bruce Springsteen - "Born to Run" [the boss can wipe away the awful taste of that last song]
Lucinda Williams - "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings" [man this song rocks]
Grandpaboy - "High Time" [granpaboy (aka paul westerberg) has a new record coming out on tuesday the 21st called dead man shake. this is from his last album, the double cd stereo/mono]
>
Wilco - "I Must Be High"
the Ramones - "Needles and Pins"
Ray Charles - "Bye Bye Love" [if you ever want to really fall in love with a record, buy charles' modern sounds in country and western music and be in awe]
the Jayhawks - "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me"
Tom Waits - "Hold On" [rumour has it that his new album is due out in the spring as well]
>
the B 52s - "52 Girls" [very few songs rock and roll the way this one does]
REM - "Pretty Persuasion" [this set when in chronological order. b 52s = 1979. this song = 1984]
the Housemartins - "I Smell Winter" [1986]
the Stone Roses - "Elephant Stone" [1989]
>
the Rolling Stones - "Tumbling Dice" [another decade set. 1972]
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - "Love Comes in Spurts" [1977]
New York Dolls - "Personality Crisis" [1974]
the Stooges - "TV Eye" [1970]
>
Husker Du - "Something I Learned Today"
Failure - "The Nurse Who Loved Me" [this worked exactly as planned since a guy called in and asked who did that cover of the new a perfect circle song. i got to inform him that this was the original and the a perfect circle version a cover. supposedly it's really good though. i haven't heard it yet]
Girls Against Boys - "Super-fire" [just wouldn't be a party without GvsB]
Elastica - "Car Song" [undoubtedly one of the sexiest songs ever made]
>
Verbena - "All the Saints"
the Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner" [any summer driving mix cd/tape has to have this on it. and..yes, i'm about to actually say this.."hannah jane" by hootie and the blowfish. heh]
Television - "Glory"
Idlewild - "The Modern Way of Letting Go" [these guys were awesome at south by southwest]
>
Jim White - "10 Miles to Go on a 9 Mile Road" [this set comprised artist tracks that were featured on any of the loose records compilations, new sounds of the old west volumes 1 - 3. they are superb if you can have them imported. the brits could teach us a lot about ourselves]
the Supersuckers - "Must've Been High" [not to be confused with the wilco song from earlier]
the Handsome Family - "So Much Wine" [the first song by them i ever heard. it's gorgeous]
Noahjohn - "First Communion" [a stellar band well worth hearing]
>
Talking Heads - "Take Me to the River"
Radiohead - "Like Spinning Plates" [an appropriate pairing, given that radiohead took their name from a talking heads song]
Emmy Lou Harris - "Angel Band" [a gorgeous song]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "All in All"
Bob Dylan - "Not Dark Yet" [one of my favourite dylan songs of all time. i adore time out of mind somethin' fierce]

Thanks for listening! We'll be back next week at the normal 12am - 2am time slot. Until then, take care and be good to one another.
