j's indie/rock mayhem - 7th january 2004

[tonight was a feverishly great show. i came up in a good mood and a good handful of calls for some fantastic requests (and one really great, complimentary call) made it all the better. it makes me realize how much i miss this time slot. i would do just about anything to get back into it. but in the meanwhile.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the Shins - "So Says I" [i hate it when big hype cds actually catch up to me. grr. this is a good song.]
New York Dolls - "Chatterbox"
Ash - "Girl From Mars" [by request. i like ash quite a bit, although i prefer a lot of their songs over this one.]
X - "In This House That I Call Home" [from their classic wild gift album.]
>
Stellastar - "In the Walls" [the more tracks i play off this record, the more i like it.]
Ryan Adams - "So Alive" [by request. this is from his rock 'n' roll album. i handily prefer the love is hell EPs that came out, but this album too is slowly turning around for me.]
the Kingsbury Manx - "Fixed Bayonets" [NC's own. a great, beautiful song.]
the Gun Club - "Ghost on the Highway" [reckless, gothic-americana punk at its best.]
>
Q and Not U - "Ten Thousand Animal Calls" [from the on play patterns single. this was released right before their last album, different damage.]
Stephen Malkmus - "Jenny and the Ess-dog" [one of his best story telling songs. endlessly funny and witty.]
Teenage Fanclub - "Radio"
Mary Lou Lord - "The Throng of Blowtown" [one of the most beautiful songs to directly reference carol kaye.]
>
the Pixies - "Dig For Fire" [by request. he wanted to hear "alec eiffel" but the station's copy of tromp le monde is long gone, and mine was at home. so, i found our copy of bossanova instead. i love this song.]
the Roots - "Adrenaline" [from things fall apart.]
Morphine - "Murder for the Money" [from like swimming.]
the Darkness - "Best of Me" [wow these guys rock. heh.]
>
Guadalcanal Diary - "Always Saturday" [i heard this song on tom's diner last saturday and really loved it. i like guadalcanal diary, but only have one of their other records.]
Johnny Cash - "Solitary Man" [his cover of the neil diamond song from the american III album.]
Jurassic 5 - "What's Golden"
Wilco - "I'm the Man Who Loves You" [they're working on their new album..or so the story goes.]
>
Afghan Whigs - "Debonair" [few things rock like this song.]
Bob Dylan - "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"
The Replacements - "Color Me Impressed" [by request. but like i need prodding to play my favorite band of all time.]
the Drive-by Truckers - "Do It Yourself" [from their highly impressive decoration day.]
>
the Church - "Almost With You"
Liz Phair - "Big Tall Man" [is it unfair for me to make snide remarks about liz's new album every time i play something off one of her first three? probably. but is it untrue? not at all.]
Jesse Malin - "Wendy"
Kathleen Edwards - "Westby" [uhm, so, miss edwards...when're you recording a new album?]
>
My Bloody Valentine - "Only Shallow"
Le Tigre - "My, My Metrocard"
the Jayhawks - "Tailspin"
