j's indie/rock mayhem - 9th january 2004

[i had a nice night living it up in the station earlier on with the friday night wrecking crew of maddog (6pm - 8pm), eugene (8pm - 10pm) and myself along with tom of tom's diner fame. discussing music around any of us is a dangerous proposition. but i would take any of you readers on in a game of pop-culture trivial pursuit with those guys as my partners. hmm..i smell a QFS fundraising event. on with the show.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Lucinda Williams - "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings"
the Housemartins - "I Smell Winter" [this song was perfect with the snow we'd been receiving all day. greensboro looks gorgeous in white; even if it is after labor day.]
the Jayhawks - "Waiting for the Sun"
the Stooges - "No Fun" [back when i resided in london, there was the (still somewhat ongoing) fad of mixing two totally unrelated songs together and getting some odd, but catchy hybrid, such as the admittedly jaw-dropping blend of the strokes and christina aguilara. one of my favorite others was a mix of salt 'n' peppa's "push it" and "no fun" by the stooges. heh.]
>
Portastatic - "Autumn Got Dark" [portastatic put out two really great cds last year. this is from the latest, autumn was a lark.]
Television - "Glory"
the Pixies - "Levitate Me" [listened to the album this is from, come on pilgrim, today at work and was reminded of this gem.]
Jen Trynin - "Good" [i got a quasi-theme going for the night: moderate radio hits. does anyone remember this trynin song? it's actually, pardon the awful joke, quite good.]
>
Teenage Fanclub - "Sparky's Dream" [i mentioned that i play this song too much, and i do. but whatever.]
Wax - "California" [speaking of moderate radio hits. the video made this song.]
Sparklehorse - "Someday I'll Treat You Good" [from vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot.]
the Mekons - "Empire of the Senseless"
>
Stellastar - "My Coco" [people talk about the lead singer of interpol sounding like ian curtis...forget it. stellastar's frontman has the warble down like the real mccoy.]
Sleater-Kinney - "Step Aside"
Wire - "Men 2nd" [which i mistakenly called "women and children 1st" on the air. that's what i get for not having the liner notes.]
the Cure - "Friday I'm in Love"
>
Green on Red - "Keith Can't Read" [this marked a set of paisley underground related bands. this green on red track was more stones than psychadelic however.]
Game Theory - "She'll be a Verb" [a lovely little upbeat gem.]
Mazzy Star - "Fade into You" [mazzy star's guitarist used to be in a band called opal with the former bass player of the dream syndicate, and before that he was in the rain parade, one of the paisley underground bands. thus, why i played a song from the 90s to represent an 80s genre.]
the Dream Syndicate - "The Days of Wine and Roses" [man this song floors me, relentlessly.]
>
Belle and Sebastian - "Step Into My Office, Baby" [by request. this song is quite catchy and witty and good.]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Way Away" [early toad from 1989's bread and circus.]
Rangeboy - "Can't Can't Stop" [a great, unsigned band from virginia. this song is very reminiscent of everything that was wonderful about early cure records.]
Lyle Lovett - "Flyswatter/Ice Water Blues (Monty Trenckmann's Blues)" [i'm not sure why lyle felt that the song needed that long of a title, but it's easily one of his most beautiful compositions. so i'll let it slide.]
>
Bash and Pop - "Friday Night is Killing Me"
Afghan Whigs - "Turn on the Water" [damn they rule.]
Ryan Adams - "Wonderwall" [from the love is hell pt. 1 EP. really, quite a nice cover.]

Thanks for listening. I'll be back next week for two shows:

Wednesday 14th January - 6pm - 8pm
Friday 16th January - 10pm - 12am

Talk to you then.
