j's indie/rock mayhem - 14th january 2004

[a really fun show tonight, just like last wendesday. i have more energy on these evenings than i tend to have on the late friday night slot. alas. it was bouyed by the inordinant amount of requests. way above average calls. it made my heart tingle. it's a pleasure having people call with good requests, and every one was fantastic. onward.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Stellastar - "In the Walls" [i've talked about these guys several times already. so no need to repeat how good they are.]
Fugazi - "Turnover" [by request. a fantastic request to start off the night.]
Fountains of Wayne - "No Better Place" [one of the best from their latest, welcome interstate managers.]
Grandpaboy - "MPLS" [paul westerberg's nome de rock.]
>
The Bens - "Bruised" [a great li'l ep from the bens: ben kweller, ben lee and ben folds. quite the supergroup.]
Talking Heads - "I Zimbra"
Girls Against Boys - "Tucked In" [classic gvsb from cruise yourself.]
Wire - "Three Girl Rhumba" [you know. the song elastica ripped off for "connection." yeah, that one.]
>
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - "Get Down Moses" [a great song from their last studio album.]
Elliot Smith - "Junk Bond Trade" [by request. since i was playing 'artists that died' last year, i got a request for messr. smith. so i tried to comply on the rest of the set.]
Johnny Cash - "I Hung My Head" [from american IV.]
the Ramones - "Howling at the Moon (Sha-La-La)" [i think dee dee ramone died in 2003, but i could be wrong. it might have been 2002. either way.]
>
Q and Not U - "X-Polynation"
New Order - "Love Vigilantes" [gosh, new order is fantastic.]
Built to Spill - "The Plan (live)" [by email request. see? email requests do work! this is from their live album.]
New York Dolls - "Babylon" [i started teaching mesopotamian literature to my classes today. so naturally, "babylon" was stuck in my head.]
>
Superchunk - "Detroit Has a Skyline" [by email request. NC's own.]
Tom Waits - "Get Behind the Mule" [this might have killed the pace a little bit with its nearly seven minute running time, but honestly, it's a breathtaking blues romp. i adore tom waits.]
Husker Du - "Something I Learned Today" [so, the pace immediately went back up.]
Joy Division - "She's Lost Control (live)" [by request. this is from the preston 28 february 1980 live album. a great document of a great, great band.]
>
the Flaming Lips - "Unconsciously Screamin'" [by request. from in a priest driven ambulance. often considered their first truly great record.]
The The - "Love is Stronger Than Death" [this is such a beautiful song.]
REM - "Driver 8"
the Jam - "All Mod Cons" [by request. kinda shorter than i expected. oops. but quite good.]
>
Neko Case - "Deep Red Bells" [from blacklisted.]
Pulp - "Mis-shapes"
the Replacements - "Can't Hardly Wait"
Television - "See No Evil"

See you guys Friday night, 10pm - 12am. Cheers.
