j's indie/rock mayhem - 21st january 2004

[another very fun evening. i'm going to lobby hard for this wednesday evening slot. i get a lot more calls and tend to be in a lot more upbeat mood than on friday evenings when i'm dead tired. here's to great music keeping me going.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the Cash Brothers - "Sweet" [this album is slowly growing on me more and more. there are some real gems.]
the Afghan Whigs - "Gentlemen"
Jeff Buckley - "Last Goodbye (live)" [by request. from the mystery white boy live cd.]
Nada Surf - "Hyperspace" [the fantastic lead track from their 2nd album, the proximity effect.]
>
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - "Coma Girl"
Division of Laura Lee - "The Truth is Fucked" [had to do some heavy editing on this one, but it was worth it. a guy called in wanting info cos he really loved it.]
Yo La Tengo - "Cherry Chapstick" [possibly my favorite yo la tengo song.]
Bob Dylan - "I Want You" [from a sampler of the 15 newly remastered SACD bob dylan albums. this is, apparently, the first time any of his records have been remastered from the original tapes. exciting.]
>
the Kingsbury Manx - "Pelz Komet" [a great NC artist.]
Velvet Underground - "I'm Waiting for the Man" [way too cool.]
the Dave Brubeck Quartet - "Take Five" [a guy called in saying he loved our station, especially in contrast to commerical ones. he commented that he really liked jazz (having heard a jazz show on our station at some point) so i reached out a bit and played some brubeck for him.]
Hank Williams Sr. - "Ramblin' Man" [this song is just so haunting.]
>
the Flaming Lips - "She Don't Use Jelly" [by request. even their top 40 hits are stunning music. i'm serious.]
the Small Faces - "Sorry She's Mine" [something i dug out to give a shot. not a bad mod band at all.]
Fountains of Wayne - "Radiation Vibe" [speaking of great pop music.]
Fischerspooner - "The 15th" [a cover of the wire classic.]
>
My Morning Jacket - "Lowdown" [they played last night at the cat's cradle in carborro. so i thought i'd do a bit of advertising for them. a great band.]
Guided by Voices - "Glad Girls"
Kendra Smith/David Roback/Keith Mitchell - "Fell From the Sun" [this is obviously the band opal, but for whatever reason, they were listed as the group member's three names on this 12" EP. i'm a bit confused. tom, if you're reading, any ideas?]
Mansun - "Wide Open Space" [mansun is a seriously fun band. i got a great call from a friend who had only ever heard this song as a re-mix by paul oakenfold. so, now she gets to hear the band in their original glory.]
>
the Drive-by Truckers - "Something's Gotta Give (Pretty Soon)" [this was the best response. a guy called in really enthused about the song, saying he was definitely going to hunt their stuff up. i love when i sell bands to people.]
Pinback - "Offcell" [by request. i'd never heard these guys before, but they're really not that bad.]
the Darkness - "Best of Me" [hah! this song rules.]
Tiger Bear Wolf - "An Entire City of Mesh-back Hats" [greensboro rocks.]
>
Whiskeytown - "Yesterday's News" [one of their most eggregious replacements rips. but who cares. at least they're copping from the best.]
Big Star - "O, Dana"
Grandpaboy - "Vampires & Failures"
Pulp - "The Trees"
>
the Church - "Russian Autumn Heart" [from gold afternoon fix. i adore the churc.]

Thanks for listening. See you guys tomorrow night, 10pm - 12am. I'll have a trainee, but we'll be back with this week's Friday Night Jones. What will it be? Tune in to find out!
