j's indie/rock mayhem - 28th january 2004

[we were off the air for a few days due to the winter storm, but luckily we came back on just before my show tonight. luck smiles sometimes, even though i've spent most of the last four days trapped in my own apartment due to being unable to move my car. ice is a slippery beast. thankfully, we've had nothing but optional workdays this week. otherwise i'd be in some serious trouble.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Josh Ritter - "Snow is Gone" [appropriate. something i wished was true at the moment.]
Johnny Darrell - "Why You Been Gone So Long" [a very cool song. i got my copy from the oxford american compilation cd from last spring.]
Elliot Smith - "In the Lost and Found (Honky Bach)" [by request.]
Bob Dylan - "Summer Days"
>
Ryan Adams - "This Is It" [rock 'n' roll isn't as bad as i once thought it. but it's still making me wonder.]
Merle Haggard - "If You've Got the Money (I've Got the Time)" [hag's version of the classic lefty frizzell number. from his roots vol. 1 album.]
Johnny Cash - "The Mercy Seat" [by request. a friend, who couldn't think what to ask for, said she'd been listening to nick cave a good bit. so, why not the man in black's version of one of cave's finest songs?]
Elvis Costello - "Watching the Detectives"
>
the Clean - "Big Soft Punch" [the clean are quite fantastic.]
Josh Rouse - "Sunshine (Come On Lady)" [from his excellent album 1972.]
Pedro the Lion - "Simple Economics"
the Who - "Behind Blue Eyes" [i played this since there is that cover version by limp bizkit making the rounds on modern rock radio. gives me the shivers.]
Jay Farrar - "Clear Day Thunder" [from his first solo album, sebastopol.]
>
Archers of Loaf - "Web in Front"
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - "Vanessa from Queens"
the Afghan Whigs - "Fountain and Fairfax" [a stunning song.]
the Cash Brothers - "You're It"
>
Rangeboy - "Sounds Like Summer" [a fantastic, unsigned band from virginia. you can listen to some other mp3s of their work over at their site. if you go and dig it, let them know i sent you.]
Buzz of Delight - "Southern" [a very early matthew sweet project that tom (of tom's diner) informed me about. where as i'm not always a huge fan of sweet's first two solo albums, this ep is quite dandy.]
the Nitty Gritty Dirty Band feat. Matraca Berg and Emmylou Harris - "Oh Cumberland" [from the lovely will the circle be unbroken vol. 3 that came out back in 2002.]
the Undertones - "Teenage Kicks" [a nearly flawless pop song. john peel knew greatness when he heard it too.]
>
the Church - "Spark"
Girls Against Boys - "Rockets are Red" [early gvsb. from venus luxure no. 1 baby.]
the Heartbreakers - "Born to Lose/Born too Loose" [your pick on the actual title. it says one on the record, another on the sleeve. a classic song from the late 70s new york punk scene.]
the Drive-by Truckers - "Sink Hole"
>
REM - "Pale Blue Eyes" [a cover of the velvet underground classic. a b-side to the "so. central rain" 12" single.]
New Riders of the Purple Sage - "Glendale Train" [from their debut record. this is the only album on which jerry garcia and other members of the grateful dead were members of the band. accordingly, it's also their best.]
Grandpaboy - "Silent Film Star" [from the grandpaboy/paul westerberg double album stereo/mono.]
the Pogues - "Sally MacLennane"
>
Tiger Bear Wolf - "An Entire City Full of Mesh-back Hats" [playing at corndale house on the corner of lawndale and cornwallis this friday night with des ark and others. they rock.]

Thanks for listening. We'll see you guys Friday night from 10pm - 12am for the Friday Night Jones. Take care.
