j's indie/rock mayhem - 11th february 2004

[tonight was a hoot. some great requests and some great comments from listeners. it's always nice to hear from you guys. onward.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Tiger Bear Wolf - "An Entire City of Mesh-back Hats" [gate city rock.]
Hank Williams III - "I'm a Long Gone Daddy" [from the timeless hank williams sr. tribute album.]
the Dead Boys - "What Love Is" [classic 70s punk.]
Lookwell - "Resurrection" [by request. a north carolina artist. this was from a 1999 ep. very good, actually.]
>
Kingsbury Manx - "Fixed Bayonets" [more NC rock. a beautiful song off their latest, aztec discipline.]
Teenage Fanclub - "Did I Say"
Willie Nelson - "Columbus Stockade Blues" [the jazz influence in this song is unavoidable, but then again, willie has never shied away from that element.]
Camera Obscura - "Number One Son"
>
the Bens - "Just Pretend"
Lucinda Williams - "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten" [by request. a fabulous song from one of america's finest songsmiths.]
Fizzle Like a Flood - "Nothing Much" [an interesting instrumental piece from their self-titled ep.]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Don't Go Away" [from their 1990 album, pale.]
>
Rangeboy - "Sounds Like Summer"
All Astronauts - "Glassening" [from winston-salem. quite the rock.]
Sonic Youth - "Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style" [from their quite brilliant murray street album.]
Sleater-Kinney - "Funeral Song" [so, when are you guys putting out a new album?]
>
Dizee Rascal - "Seems 2 Be" [the mercury prize winner of 2003. crazy uk hip hop. i can't decide what i make of it. but it's damn entertaining.]
the Rain Parade - "This Can't Be Today" [from their debut lp. great paisley underground rock.]
the Streets - "Sharp Darts" [more great uk hip hop.]
Bob Dylan - "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues"
>
Olivia Tremor Control - "Jumping Fences" [from the recently re-issued album, dusk at cubist castle. this may be one of the best OTC songs i've ever heard. it's beautiful.]
the Frames - "Rent Day Blues (live)" [ireland's own.]
22-20s - "22 Days"
Josh Ritter - "Kathleen" [i was quite excited cos someone called in really digging this song. so, naturally, i gushed on the phone about josh ritter. he's quite superb.]
>
Robbers on High Street - "Debonair" [not a bad song, but easily the funniest song title on their ep is "hot sluts (say i love you)." hilarious.]
Afghan Whigs - "Turn on the Water" [if i had my copy of gentlemen with me, i would've played the whigs' "debonaire" right after that last song. but i settled for the obscure irony of just playing them afterwards instead.]
Squirrel Nut Zippers - "Suits Are Picking Up the Bill"
the Planet The - "Man Called Wife" [from a rather odd and unexplained collection called the last thing we ever did: a comp.]
the Undertones - "Jimmy Jimmy"
Jenny Toomey - "Patsy Cline" [by request. unfortunately i was distracted and didn't hear much of it.]
>
Elastica - "Car Song"

Next Wednesday marks the 9 year anniversary of the passing of Bob Stinson, the original lead guitarist for the Replacements. As a tribute to that sad day, the last hour of the show next week will be dedicated to Bob Stinson-era Replacements' songs and snippets, including some wonderful live material. I hope you all will tune in. Until then, have a great week.
