j's indie/rock mayhem - 24th march 2004

[good evening to you all. a plethora of delicious concerts are on their way to the greensboro/north carolina scene and that became the focus of the show tonight. i'll comment individually as we head along.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Q and Not U - "X-Polynation" [they will be here at guilford college on saturday 3rd april. they put on a hellacious show, and it's free. oh, yeah. and they're one of the best post-punk bands in america today, bar none.]
Tiger Bear Wolf - "Pens Tied Down" [greensboro's own. playing at the guilford apartments this saturday 27th march on the closing night of serendipity. show starts somewhere around 10 or 11pm.]
Dangermouse - "Change Clothes" [from the grey album.]
Pretty Girls Make Graves - "The Grandmother Wolf" [they were here tonight at ace's basement.]
>
the Nein - "Handout" [also playing this saturday night at the apartments.]
Stickboy - "Falling" [by request. local greensboro rock.]
New Bethel - "Radio Started" [an interesting instrumental piece. not bad.]
Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham - "Hear the Wind Blow (Down Moonlight Mile)" [hey guys..the 70s called. they want the velvet underground back. oh, well, these guys are quite good.]
>
the Gits - "I'm Lou" [see last week's post for a synopsis of the gits. good, dirty punk.]
the Byrds - "You're Still On My Mind" [from sweetheart of the rodeo. wow, do i love this album.]
Teenage Fanclub - "Ain't That Enough"
Butter 08 - "Butter of 69" [by request. this certainly was a night to take me back into the 90s. first off, this request. this was a super group of sorts featuring members of john spencer blues explosion and cibo matto. i remember seeing this song's video debut on 120 Minutes. then, i just turned on the game show network and saw kennedy hosting some game show. can i just say that my crush on her has not abated even if she's not hosting alternative nation anymore? totally.]
>
Twilight Singers - "Esta Noche" [they're playing next monday, 29th march, at the cat's cradle in carborro.]
Sleater-Kinney - "Get Up" [one of my all time favorite songs by them.]
Bob Dylan - "I Threw It All Away (live)" [this is the coup of coups: tickets go on sale this saturday morning at 10am to see bob dylan at the orange peel in asheville. a 1,000 person or so occupancy venue. small, very small. alas, i'm going to be out of town for the show. curses.]
Jet By Day - "Worldwide" [the third and final band to be playing this saturday night at the apartments with tiger bear wolf and the nein.]
>
Josh Ritter - "Rainslicker" [he's playing at go studios on monday 19th april.]
the Coral - "Liezah" [hot! this was the best new thing in rotation this week. a beautiful mix of sixties pop and psychedelica. i really have to hear more of this. their EP from last year did not hint at how good this is at all.]
the Rain Parade - "This Can't Be Today" [from modern 60s throwback, to 80s 60s throwback. one of the paisley underground's shining lights.]
Destroyer - "It's Gonna Take an Airplane" [the next best thing from rotation. the new destroyer album is beautiful.]
>
the Finks - "Heat Rises" [winston-salem rock. one of them will be on the rock and roll scrapbook on WQFS tomorrow afternoon, 25th march, from 2pm - 4pm. check it out.]
Blur - "Parklife"
Dilated Peoples - "Work the Angles" [dilated has a new album coming in april and is playing at duke with kanye west in april as well.]
the Emergency - "Under the Weather" [a great rock record.]
>
Little Brother - "The Get Up" [playing along with nappy roots this friday night as the big serendipity party. 9pm at ragan brown field house.]
the Replacements - "Valentine"
the Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner"
Elastica - "Stutter"
>
Tom Waits - "Rosie" [my junior year i closed every show with a tom waits song. it was a really good idea.]

Until next week, take care. Come out to see the Serendipity shows and spot me. I'll also be at the Twilight Singers show on Monday.
