j's indie/rock mayhem - 28th april 2004

[i had a blast with this evening's show. i thought the music i lucked into was a great kaleidoscope of material and it certainly came together well. congrats to eric, the wqfs listener who snagged the free pair of tickets to the free texas festival this weekend over in winston-salem. onward.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Camper Van Beethoven - "Take the Skinheads Bowling" [from a sampler of the upcoming re-release of all four camper van albums. very exciting that they're getting the royal treatment finally.]
Frank Black - "Los Angeles"
Big Star - "When My Baby's Beside Me" [one of my favorite big star songs. if only for the tasty solo.]
Happy Mondays - "24 Hour Party People" [from the "wrote for luck" single. this song (in a different form) eventually became the title piece for the movie of the same name about the english 'madchester' scene and factory records.]
>
the Fever - "Labor of Love" [not a bad entry into the dance/DFA/garage revival of the past four or five years.]
Uncle Tupelo - "Factory Belt" [classic alt-country from their debut, no depression.]
Lucinda Williams - "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings" [oh, miss lucinda, how you doth rock.]
the Gun Club - "She's Like Heroin to Me" [this song is unreal. the gun club are like no one else.]
>
Eugene Chadbourne and Noahjohn - "Coward" [brazen politico-country. gotta love it.]
Bob Dylan - "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues (live)" [from the live 1964 bootleg series release.]
Johnny Cash - "The Ballad of Ira Hayes"
Noahjohn - "First Communion" [since i've been playing that eugene chadbourne collaboration so much, i went and dug up noahjohn's last album, the absolutely lovely water hymns.]
Willie Nelson - "Stardust" [this song always makes me think of woody allen, obviously. stardust memories is one of my favorite allen films.]
>
[the following set of bands are all playing at the free texas festival this weekend. go check 'em out.]
Hope for a Golden Summer - "Malt Liquor" [this is the money band, along with all astronauts, on friday during the festival. their vocalist is amazing.]
the Corndawg - "Rigo" [a great short song that sounds like 'jonathan richman' and 'joe strummer,' at least, according to kelly.]
All Astronauts - "Glassening" [another great band from winston-salem.]
Cantwell, Gomez and Jordan - "Circus of Despair" [a great NC collective.]
>
Matt Pond PA - "Lily One" [this is quite the infectious EP.]
Casper and the Cookies - "Every Brown Haired Girl" [by request. this is one of the members of of montreal and his wife. i was kind of bored by this song, but i'm the one taking requests. so so be it.]
R.E.M. - "Pretty Persuasion"
the Human League - "Seconds" [i love this song. just like i love gary numan. i could hear him having done this song.]
>
Big Black - "Colombian Necktie" [this song has been in my head for a few days, so i took this chance to exercise it. from the rather brilliant and caustic, songs about fucking.]
Andrew Octopus - "Stroboscopic Robitussin Hoedown" [from his self-released time travel is possible. a bizarre mix of things that remind me of what john darnielle of the mountaingoats would sound like had he done hip-hop - as in, very low-fi. parts remind me of primal scream's vanishing point-era work. others of just the sound of the future calling home on a thin connection. ]
Brian Eno - "Blank Frank" [from here come the warm jets.]
Hank Williams Sr. - "Ramblin' Man" [god, i love this song.]
>
the Afghan Whigs - "Turn on the Water"
Jeff Buckley - "Lover, You Should Have Come Over"
Guided By Voices - "Glad Girls" [GBV announced they are finally calling it quits after the release of and tour for their next album that drops in august. a toast to an indie-rock institution going out in style.]
