j's indie/rock mayhem - 7th april 2004

[so wqfs ended up registering a total of thirty new voters this weekend between the two concerts that we sponsored. a good start to our drive. i have a personal goal of registering one-hundred new voters by the end of May, but that's just the whiskey talking. not really. also we gave away two pairs of tickets to see josh ritter at go studios on april 19th tonight on the show. congrats to our two winners. there's still one more pair to be given out this friday night on the friday night rock party with mad dog from 6pm - 8pm. tune in and rock.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Dilated Peoples - "This Way" [the new single off their new album, neighborhood watch. this track features production and rapping from producer du jour, kanye west. it's an awesome song.]
the Coral - "Liezah"
the Pogues - "If I Should Fall From Grace With God"
Fountains of Wayne - "Survival Car" [a great song; a choice prompted by one of my student's discussion of how great "stacy's mom" is as a song.]
>
Dangermouse - "What More Can I Say?" [what more can i say? this album is fantastique.]
Catherine Wheel - "Texture" [stuck in my head most of the week. great, quasi-shoe gazer rock. although aeons louder.]
the Church - "Under the Milky Way" [their new album is supposed to be one of their best since the 80s. i'm going to try and track it down.]
Josh Ritter - "Snow is Gone" [probably my favorite song from his newest album hello starling.]
>
Matt Pond PA - "Closest (look out)" [a very good song from an EP that seems to be a warm up for his forthcoming full length.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Hockey Skates" [got a call from a person who enjoyed this quite a bit. that's cos kathleen edwards rules.]
Destroyer - "It's Gonna Take an Airplane"
Oasis - "Stand By Me" [i just bought a used copy of be here now earlier this week and this is my favorite song off of it so far. although talk about overkill. the first four songs on this album all hit the six minute mark at least.]
>
Bob Dylan - "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues" [from the new bootleg volume 6: live 1964 album. this is an entire concert recorded at philharmonic hall and from that golden age between another side of bob dylan and the onrushing beast that became his first judas album (bringing it all back home). a solo acoustic performance that is mesmerising.]
Ben Kweller - "Family Tree" [by request. good song.]
Death Cab for Cutie - "A Movie Script Ending" [by request. another really good song. i rather like death cab.]
They Might Be Giants - "Caroline, No" [a cover of the beach boys' classic, from their new EP.]
>
Decahedron - "Pay No Mind" [new side project for joe lally of fugazi.]
Drugstore - "I Wanna Love You Like a Man"
the Gits - "Bob (Cousin O.)"
Merle Haggard - "Always Late (With Your Kisses)" [from the roots vol. 1 album of covers. merle turned 67 this week. happy birthday, hag!]
>
For Squirrels - "The Mighty K.C." [one of the more interesting one-hit wonders of the mid-90s. a sad case: a song written about kurt cobain that slowly becomes a radio hit, suddenly derailed by a bus accident killing half the band. the album this is from, example, is not a bad piece of mid-90s alternative rock. quite good, actually.]
Nirvana - "On a Plain" [for the anniversary.]
Wilco - "Muzzle of Bees" [this is definitely NOT off the wilco record scheduled to come out june 22nd that was leaked online a few weeks ago. absolutely not.]
Afghan Whigs - "Crime Scene Part One"
>
Jay Farrar - "Damn Shame (Memphis Mix)" [the funky, more bluesy re-mix of this track from jay's first solo album, sebastopol. this is from the thirdshiftgrottoshack EP.]
Teenage Fanclub - "About You"

I will be gone next week as I will be in Germany, but Andy Weeks will be filling in for me. I'll be back on the air on April 21st for another edition of the show. Until then, take care and I'll see some of you at the Josh Ritter show on April 19th!
