j's indie/rock mayhem - 26th may 2004

[so, tonight i had a fantastic set of training djs with me. two of them were the age of my students! crazy. we don't have many <18 year olds up there. but it'll be great to have their input in the station. i enjoyed their picks quite a bit (and can illuminate them a bit more than i could beyond's picks last week), so i'm posting the entire play list tonight. the meeting to determine summer schedule is on sunday, so hopefully i will be staying right here in the wednesday night slot. that's what i'd prefer, at least. onward.]

ADDENDUM - Shazam! This blog has been linked to by the venerable Mr. Sun! Now that's what I call a blinding endorsement.

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Sonic Youth - "Unmade Bed" [from the new album sonic nurse which will be in stores june 8th. this album is sounding gooooooooooood.]
Beastie Boys - "So What'cha Want" [in preparation for their forthcoming to the 5 boroughs, i was rocking their classic check your head in my car the other day. and i've always loved how delightfully heavy this song is.]
the Coral - "Talkin' Gypsy Market Blues"
Woody Guthrie - "Along in the Sun and the Rain" [from the asch recordings: volume 4. this is very unlike a lot of woody's music and it's a beautiful song.]
>
Division of Laura Lee - "Dirty Love" [from their newest, das not compute.]
the Streets - "Dry Your Eyes" [i had a listener who really dug this song, and this album is growing on me incessently. it's fantastic.]
Matt Pond PA - "Claire" [from his new full length, emblems.]
Hayden - "Hollywood Ending" [huzzah for QFS putting this in rotation! huzzah!]
>
Mission of Burma - "The Setup" [from their latest, ONoffON.]
Jay Farrar - "Damn Shame (live)" [from the new live album which is very good.]
Rufus Wainwright - "Pretty Things"
Sorry About Dresden - "The Cults of the Famous and the Dead" [older SAD from an early EP. their lead singer has a new solo cd out.]
>
Calexico - "Alone Again Or" [this song features nicolai dunger and his band and wow is it nice.]
the Mountain Goats - "First Few Desperate Hours"
Cantwell, Gomez and Jordan - "Horizontal, Corazon"
Dawn Chorus - "Blue" [andrew, owner du jour of gate city noise, is in this band and their full length is blowing my mind.]
>
Moonbabies - "Forever Changes Everything Now" [i didn't select this but it really caught my ears. and apparently the ears of a listener as well. great stuff.]
Nicolai Dunger - "Something New" [from his soul rush album. since the calexico song earlier had a listener calling in, i thought i'd throw on some of dunger's own work for display.]
We Ragazzi - "Pretty Little Grave"
Bad Religion - "God's Love" [from the brand new album, the empire strikes first.]
>
Kathleen Edwards - "Hockey Skates (live)" [from the live at the bowery ballroom EP.]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Windmills" [from their dulcinea album. monday was the 10 year anniversary of the release of that record, an album which has meant a lot to me over the past ten years.]
Ryan Adams - "Come Pick Me Up" [this song tears me apart. for real.]
A Thousand Times Yes - "The Well Dressed Culprit" [snazzy title. good song.]
>
the Pogues - "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" [i used this to demonstrate cueing up vinyl records for the trainees. but what a song!]
Yonder Mountain String Band - "Raleigh and Spencer"
the Dismemberment Plan - "A Life of Possibilities" [i've always been kind of 'meh' about the dismemberment plan. but they're not bad.]
Jet By Day - "Let You Down"
>
Koufax - "Move Out, Move On"

So, I will be back this time next week, hopefully. Check back here at the website next Monday or Tuesday to learn my fate. Or, if you don't hear me next Wednesday, check the website and see where I ended up! Thanks for listening!
