j's indie/rock mayhem - 23rd june 2004

[had some great new music debuting tonight, along with some classic oldies and a brief birthday nod to a noted songsmith, so let's get to the business. onward.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
Wilco - "Theologians" [i always try to start out the show on a rockin' note, but it was made somewhat difficult by my wishes to also start off with the new wilco album. a ghost is born is not a.m. to be sure, but that's not bad and it is one hell of an album.]
Mclusky - "1956 and all that" [i should really pick a new track off this album to play, but damn if this isn't one of the punchiest numbers i've heard in awhile.]
the Pogues - "Sally Maclennane"
Tiger Bear Wolf - "Wrong Lens, Wrong Film" [the blistering, newest cut from greensboro's own.]
Jesse Malin - "Scars of Love" [i was very disappointed to find the new jesse malin album buried in the 'new release' section of rotation. (meaning, it's not being charted.) his last album, the excellent the fine art of self-destruction, did quite well for us in 2002/03. this record seems softer on the whole, but very satisfying.]
Eric B and Rakim - "I Know You Got Soul" [from the classic paid in full. golden-age hip-hop at its finest.]
Patti Smith - "Cash" [from her newest, trampin'.]
Ryan Adams - "Wonderwall" [the two love is hell EPs have finally been released as one, whole cd. why he didn't do this in the first place (and not force me to buy two cds, which i did) is beyond me, but this is easily ryan's finest work since heartbreaker, so savour it.]
Josh Rouse - "Kentucky Flood" [from the rarities half of the upcoming the smooth sounds of josh rouse live DVD and rarities set.]
Hayden - "Robbed Blind"
Afghan Whigs - "Going to Town" [few songs rock like this. thank goodness. i'd die.]
Sonic Youth - "Unmade Bed" [from the quite, quite brilliant sonic nurse.]
A.C. Newman - "Miracle Drug" [debut solo set from the main songwriter for the new pornographers. this is a stellar record of big pop hooks and infections melodies.]
Johnny Darrell - "Why You Been Gone So Long?" [well, i was wrong. not that the guy who called in will be reading this necessarily, but this is originally a mickey newberry song. my bad. the version we heard is by johnny darrell though. great song.]
Hank Williams III - "I'm a Long Gone Daddy" [from the timeless hank williams sr. tribute.]
Morrissey - "Irish Blood, English Heart" [from the remarkably good new album you are the quarry.]
Kris Kristofferson - "Me and Bobby McGee" [yesterday (22nd june) was kristofferson's birthday, so i thought i'd offer up a set of some of his best as recorded by him and some other artists. the two kristofferson performances are from the 1999 the austin sessions which had him re-recording a handful of his signature songs along with some star duets. this version of "me and bobby mcgee" had jackson browne on backing vocals.]
the Handsome Family - "Sunday Morning Coming Down" [from the nothing left to lose: a tribute to kris kristofferson album which has 17 covers of kristofferson's classics. a really great collection.]
Kris Kristofferson - "Help Me Make it Through the Night"
Richard Buckner - "Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)" [my personal favorite from the kristofferson tribute album.]
Jay Farrar - "Make It Alright (live)" [how appropriate that the son volt album in my cd player kicked in just as i got to this part of the entry. this is from jay's new live album that was recorded entirely on the recent tour for his terroir blues album. great stuff.]
Beastie Boys - "Right Right Now Now" [the new beasties album is getting a bit of a beating critically, but based on my initial few spins, i think it may become an underrated classic. they've had nary a mistake in their 15+ year career (album wise, at least) and i don't expect them to start dropping disasters now.]
Lucinda Williams - "World Without Tears"
PJ Harvey - "You Come Through" [from the quite excellent album uh huh her. miss harvey is in a league of her own.]
RJD2 - "Ring Finger" [from the jaw-dropping new album since we last spoke. dj instrumental records are rarely this exciting and inspiring.]
Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter - "Tell the Boys"
Gift of Gab - "The Writz"
Devendra Banhart - "Todo Los Dolores" [devendra is playing this sunday at PS 211 in winston-salem along with vetiver and joanna newsome. should be a really fantastic show.]
the Darkness - "Love is Only a Feeling" [one of my very favorites from the brilliant and fun permission to land.]
Bob Dylan - "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues (live)" [from the new live 1964 bootleg series release. a classic protest/satire song from dylan's political golden-age.]

Talk to you guys next week! Thanks for listening!
