j's indie/rock mayhem - 28th july 2004

[so, after the highway debacle last week, i yet again had to take off a half hour early this week to go see jesse malin. however, next week it's a four hour indie/rock mayhem extravaganza from 6pm - 10pm on august 4th. tell the neighbors. now, onward.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Neko Case - "If I'm Gonna Sink (I Might As Well Go to the Bottom)" [a lovely rendition of the johnny paycheck classic from the forthcoming touch my heart: a tribute to johnny paycheck. a lovely tribute record to the late songwriter featuring dave alvin, hank williams III, george jones, buck owens, jeff tweedy, bobby bare and radney foster. really great stuff.]
Aimee Mann - "Pavlov's Bell" [from the gorgeous lost in space.]
Shalini - "Downed" [by request. north carolina artist doing a rousing rendition of this cheap trick song. from their latest, metal corner.]
Pulp - "My Legendary Girlfriend" [from 1992's separations.]
>
Jesse Malin - "Scars of Love" [from jesse's new album, the heat. he put on an excellent show at go room 4 on wednesday night. his new album is really sharp and lovely.]
the Damnwells - "What You Get" [they opened for jesse and put on a hell of a show. i've seen these guys three times in the last year and they just get better. this is from their latest, bastards of the beat, a luscious, power-pop/roots rock gem.]
Aztec Camera - "Good Morning Britain" [featuring joe strummer on co-vocals. a big anthem from their 1990 album stray.]
the Roots - "Somebody's Gotta Do It" [the obvious single from their newest, the tipping point. featuring devin the dude and jean grae.]
>
Son Volt - "Sometimes" [from the excellent por vida: a tribute to the songs of alejandro escovedo. this is a two disc set featuring the cream of the crop of alt-country/roots rock paying tribute to this amazing songwriter. the money raised by this set goes to benefit alejandro's medical funds as he collapsed from complications from hepititis c back in april of this year. you are getting an awesome set of music and helping out an amazing musician simultaneously. what a deal. this is also a re-united son volt recording this. they got back together just to record this song. so this is not a leftover. this is son volt now. i was excited.]
Imperial Teen - "Ivanka" [from old enough 2 know better: 15 years of merge, the new compilation featuring tracks from every band ever on chapel hill's merge records label. their anniversary series of concerts started last night, thursday july 29th, and runs through this sunday the 1st.]
the Avett Brothers - "Hard Worker" [from the outstanding mignonette.]
the Suicide Commandos - "Mosquito Crucifixion" [from 1978's make a record. old minneapolis punk rock, one of the first bands to burst forth from the soon to be burning scene up north.]
the River Bends - "All the Days and Nights" [the new band centered around the songwriting of denison witmer. a lovely, lovely record. it's so good to hear his work fleshed out.]
>
Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminals' Starvation League - "Valentine" [certainly a mouthful, but a glorious roots rock album from the son-of-a-legend/legend-in-his-own-right, bobby bare jr.]
Bruce Springsteen - "Youngstown" [from 1995's the ghost of tom joad. one of the darkest, most depressing records i think i've ever listened to, but man is the boss' storytelling on fire. an amazing album.]
the Afghan Whigs - "Honky's Ladder"
Sam Prekop - "Showrooms" [member of the sea and cake, from his one and only self-titled solo release.]
>
A.C. Newman - "On the Table" [lead songwriter for the new pornographers. he'll be at go room 4 on sunday, august 15th. from his new solo album the slow wonder.]
the Gun Club - "Ghost on the Highway" [from fire of love.]
Sheryl Crow - "No Depression In Heaven" [a lovely version of the carter family classic from a new cd featuring various artists (who are considered 'descendents,' musically, of the carter family) doing carter family tunes. a great record.]

That's all for now. Look for the concert review and pictures soon.
