j's indie/rock mayhem - 11th august 2004

[a really fun show with lots of great music out of rotation and some really fun stuff from the archives. i won't even bother waxing, poetic or otherwise. onward.]

Guided by Voices - "Everybody Thinks I'm a Raincloud (When I'm Not Looking)" [the lead single from the forth-coming swan-song album, half smiles of the decomposed.]
the Velvet Underground - "I'm Waiting for the Man" [i love this song way, way too much. it's too cool for words at times. of course, from the velvet underground and nico.]
the Roots - "Don't Say Nuthin" [from their newest, the tipping point.]
Neko Case - "If I'm Gonna Sink (I Might as Well Go to the Bottom)" [her excellent johnny paycheck cover from the touch my heart johnny paycheck tribute album.]

Trouble with Sweeney - "Evelyn Rochman" [from the fishtown briefcase EP.]
the Heartbreakers - "Pirate Love" [classic, dirty 70s NYC punk. from the heartbreakers one and only album, L.A.M.F.]
Paul Westerberg - "As Far As I Know" [from his forthcoming (sept. 7th) album folker. man, my mouth is watering. if pavlov were alive today he'd point to me and say: 'yo, that's my dog.']
Son Volt - "Sometimes" [from the excellent, double-disc por vida alejandro escovedo tribute. a brand new recording for son volt.]

Neutral Milk Hotel - "Song Against Sex" [by request. from the old enough 2 know better merge records compilation. the caller wanted to hear 'neutral milk honey,' and though i tried to correct them, they didn't believe me. whatever.]
Yo La Tengo - "I Threw It All Away" [a really low-key but lovely version of the dylan classic. from president yo la tengo.]
Spoon - "Anything You Want" [also from the merge records compilation.]
the Drive-by Truckers - "Carl Perkin's Cadillac" [woo! from the forthcoming (aug. 24th) the dirty south. i couldn't find this record and was fuming at first cos i thought it stolen. then i found it, so i celebrated by playing two tracks.]

the Drive-by Truckers - "Never Gonna Change" [one of the definite highlights of the show at ziggy's two weeks ago. also from the brand new the dirty south.]
Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminals' Starvation League - "Borrow Your Girl" [by request. an excellent song from a really lovely record.]
Verbena - "White Grrls" [from la musica negra. a fellow alabama band like the drive-by truckers.]
Squirrel Nut Zippers - "Ghost of Stephen Foster" [my favorite song from the really awesome perennial favorites.]

Elliot Smith - "A Distorted Reality is Now a Necessity to be Free" [a track off his forthcoming, posthumously released album. you can get your hands on this via barsuk records/move on.org's future soundtrack for america. an absolutely stellar compilation of artists with 100% of the profits going to progressive organizations.]
Steely Dan - "Barrytown" [from pretzel logic, my personal favorite steely dan album.]
Nicolai Dunger - "Hey, Mama" [from his most recent, tranquil isolation.]
Tom Waits - "Day After Tomorrow" [a beautiful, new song recorded specifically for the future soundtrack for america compilation. it hits disturbingly close to home for me, as it will for many. god bless you, tom.]

A.C. Newman - "On the Table" [from the slow wonder. he's playing this sunday at the last show ever at go room 4 in chapel hill.]
Jim White - "Combing My Hair in a Brand New Style" [from the absolutely amazing drill a hole in that substrate and tell me what you see. he's playing at local 506 in chapel hill on this coming tuesday, august 17th.]
Sonic Youth - "Unmade Bed" [from sonic nurse. they're playing next thursday, august 19th, at the cat's cradle. this show is long sold out.]
Mutual Admiration Society - "Windmills" [the lovely collective of glen phillips (ex-toad the wet sprocket) and nickel creek. they do a really beautiful version of this classic toad song. from their self-titled album.]

Cat Stevens - "Miles From Nowhere" [a really wonderful song from tea for the tillerman.]
Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter - "Oh, My Girl" [the title track from their latest.]
