j's indie/rock mayhem - 25th august 2004

[a great week for new releases and music in general. this fall (as this summer already did) is gearing up to be one hell of a season for album releases. the top 25 list is going to be absolutely packed come december. a pair of definite top 25'ers were released this week, so let's get to the list. onward.]

Drive-by Truckers - "Where the Devil Don't Stay" [the lead track from their latest, the dirty south. check out my review of the album.]
Q and Not U - "X-Polynation" [from the "book of flags"/"x-polynation" 7"]
Stephen Malkmus - "Jenny and the Ess-Dog" [from his self-titled album.]
Paul Westerberg - "As Far As I Know" [a leaked track from his forthcoming album folker due out september 7th.]

Rogue Wave - "Seasick on Land" [from their latest out of the shadow.]
the Dead Boys - "Sonic Reducer" [from young loud and snotty.]
the Beastie Boys - "An Open Letter to NYC" [from to the 5 boroughs. an excellent song that samples the dead boys' "sonic reducer" to excellent effect, so it sounds good to play them back to back.]
Sleater-Kinney - "Off With Your Head" [originally from the limited edition bonus disc that came with their album one beat, this is from the future soundtrack for america compilation. a really great cd for a really great cause.]

Steve Earle - "Home to Houston" [from his brand new album the revolution starts...now! this also came out this tuesday.]
the Damnwells - "I'll Be Around" [from the lovely bastards of the beat.]
the Magnetic Fields - "I Don't Believe You" [by request. caller wanted to hear "smoke and mirrors," but per usual, any decent band has had their back catalogue hijacked over the years. this is from their most recent album i.]
Bob Dylan - "She Belongs to Me" [from bringing it all back home.]

the Roots - "I Don't Care" [from thier latest, the tipping point.]
Flying Burrito Brothers - "Lazy Days" [originally from burrito deluxe, this came from the beyond nashville: the twisted heart of country music compilation that is a wonderful bounty of great music.]
Catherine Wheel - "Texture" [the lead track from their classic album ferment.]
Andrew Octopus - "Stroboscopic Robitussin Hoedown" [NC artist. from the mind-bending time travel is possible. read a review here.]

Oakley Hall - "Feel This Way" [a really great brooklyn based roots-country band that can really rev it up. from their self-titled album. read a review of it here.]
T. Rex - "Jeepster" [from electric warrior. after finally getting around to owning this album, i see why it gets the credit it so richly deserves.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Money Talks (live)" [a great cover of the AC/DC classic. from the live at the bowery ballroom EP.]
Mutual Admiration Society - "Trouble" [a jon brion song from the self-titled mutual admiration society album. MAS is glen phillips (ex-toad the wet sprocket) and all three members of nickel creek. a really great collaboration.]

Painted Saints - "Cardboard and Silence Saved Us Again" [from their miles of twine album. they sound, to me, like a more lo-fi, rustic version of some of noahjohn's earlier work. really, really good.]
Slim Dunlap - "Girlfriend" [ex-replacements' guitarist. put out two really fantastic solo albums before semi-disappearing. this is from times like this.]
Matthew Sweet - "What Matters" [from the excllent in reverse.]
Stevie Wonder - "Higher Ground" [from innervisions. man, what a song.]

the River Bends - "Are You Lonely?" [from the sweet and somber ..and flows into the sea.]
the B-52's - "6060-842" [from their self-titled album.]
the Twilight Singers - "Teenage Wristband" [from their fantastic blackberry belle. they have a covers record coming out later this fall. i'm very excited.]
Pulp - "The Trees" [from we love life.]

the Clash - "Spanish Bombs" [from london calling which will be celebrating the 25 year anniversary of its release this december. o, mi corazon!]
Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle - "Take Me Home" [from the one from the heart soundtrack.]
Travis - "Writing to Reach You" [from the unearthly good the man who.]
Neutral Milk Hotel - "King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1" [from the quite mind-boggling in the aeroplane over the sea. so very good.]

Michael Penn - "Don't Let Me Go" [from his excellent and, unfortunately, most recent album MP4: days since a lost time accident.]
