j's indie/rock mayhem - 22nd september 2004

[a fantastic show tonight, largely thanks to the unreal amount of new music finding its way into rotation this week. i'm going to be at raleigh memorial auditorium this saturday night to see wilco and joseph arthur, so i'm sure i'll see some of you there. onward.]

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Interpol - "Evil" [yes, indeed, brand new interpol. from their forthcoming album antics. this song is quite, quite good.]
Alkaline Trio - "Blue Carolina" [by request. for a gentleman who said he was driving back into greensboro for the first time in two months. welcome back, brother.]
Black Grape - "Shake Your Money" [infectious like no one's business. from it's great when you're straight...yeah.]
Wilco - "I'm a Wheel" [from a ghost is born. playing tomorrow (friday) night at the orange peel in asheville and then saturday night in raleigh. huzzah.]
>
Paul Westerberg - "As Far As I Know" [from the excellent, now-released folker.]
Drive-by Truckers - "The Day John Henry Died" [so this album is already pretty much locked in as one of my top 5 albums of 2004. the dirty south is an unreal record.]
the Nein - "War is on the Stereo" [excellent new release from north carolina's own. this new six song EP rehashes all four songs from their self-released EP and then adds two more. it's out on sonic unyun records, a wonderful canadian label.]
the Replacements - "Alex Chilton" [by request. would i ever turn down a fan of the 'mats when they request? the answer is NO!]
>
Talib Kweli - "Broken Glass" [one of the most anticipated hip-hop releases of the year. the beautiful struggle kept getting pushed back and back. this is a hype song to be sure.]
Semisonic - "California" [from feeling strangely fine. last sunday, after the panther's beautiful victory over the chiefs, i was driving home from visiting my folks, the sun shining bright on one of the most beautiful late-summer/early-fall carolina days i've ever seen. and this album was my soundtrack. so i thought i'd share a bit with you guys.]
Pavement - "Old to Begin" [was stuck in my head all day, so why not exercise it, eh? from brighten the corners.]
the Twilight Singers - "What Makes You Think You're the One?" [a stellar fleetwood mac cover from their newest, a covers album called she loves you.]
>
Tom Waits - "Make It Rain" [brand new tom! from his forthcoming album real gone that hits stores on october 5th. this album is out there. it's the most cryptic and unsettling thing i've heard from him since the ungodly-good bone machine. i'm salivating.]
Hot Snakes - "Reflex" [wow. this song is unreal. hot snakes is former members of rocket from the crypt and drive like jehu, so you begin to get the picture: bare knuckle, speed punk. if you like the didjits, you'd love these guys. i knew hot snakes was good, but this is crazy. from their newest album audit in progress.]
Talking Heads - "Electricity (Drugs)" (live) [from the outstanding new double disc live collection, the name of this band is talking heads.]
Calexico - "Alone Again Or" [a love cover from the convict pool EP.]
>
[the untimely death of johnny ramone last week makes for the third time in five years of doing my show that i've had to do a ramones tribute due to a death. so a block of some of their best.]
the Ramones - "I Just Wanna Have Something to Do" [from road to ruin.]
the Ramones - "Howlin' at the Moon (Sha-la-la)" [from too tough to die.]
the Ramones - "The KKK Took My Baby Away" [from pleasant dreams.]
the Ramones - "Do You Remember Rock 'N' Roll Radio?" (live) [from the bonus disc of rhino's 2002 collection loud, fast, ramones: their toughest hits.]
>
Guided by Voices - "Girls of Wild Strawberries" [from their swan song, half-smiles of the decomposed. playing at the cat's cradle next week!]
Frank Zappa - "Peaches III" (live) [by request. a live reworking of the zappa classic "peaches en regalia." from the tinseltown rebellion radio clean sampler.]
Cat Stevens - "Wild World" [i guess it can now be said that we support terrorism here on j's indie/rock mayhem. from the gorgeous tea for the tillerman.]
Iron Maiden - "Running Free" [by request, sort of. one of my students called in and wanted to hear led zepplin. we do try to avoid commercial stuff, even if it's the classic rock station commercial stuff. so i went with maiden. from their self-titled album.]
My Morning Jacket - "Bermuda Highway" (live) [from the live acoustic EP. a gorgeous version of this already beautiful song.]
>
Oakley Hall - "Feel This Way" [from their quite, quite good self-titled album.]
Willie Nelson - "Always Late (With Your Kisses)" [his take on this classic, from his tribute album to lefty, from willie.]
Bob Dylan - "Corrina, Corrina" [from the freewheelin' bob dylan.]
Jurassic 5 - "Great Expectations" [from the always amazing quality control.]
>
the Ramones - "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You" (live) [one last shout out to johnny. from their 1979 live album it's alive!]

Until next week, my friends.
