j's indie/rock mayhem - 8th august 2007

[i want to apologize for the lack of a post for sunday night's j's extra mayhem. it's been a rather oppressive week, and though i don't have a real excuse, i hope you'll accept my apology anyway. i tried to make up for it with a great show tonight, lots of great new music and, i think, one of the rockin'est closing sets i've done in ages. let's get to it! onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 8th August 2007 Show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Dizzee Rascal - "Sirens" [from the new album maths + english. i love this single. one of the best videos i've seen in ages. just a stellar song.]
Fretblanket - "Into the Ocean" [from their second album, home truths from abroad. you might remember their video for this song cleaning house on mtv's defunct 12 angry viewers show, but now you can't even find it on youtube. a shame.]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Brother" [by request. i was just out buying a poster frame for a new toad poster i got on ebay yesterday, and then someone calls and requests them tonight. pure serendipity. from their b-sides and soundtrack collection, in light syrup.]
the Veils - "Calliope!" [from the j's top 25 albums of 2007 contending nux vomica. seriously, this is easily one of the best records i've heard all year.]
>
Oakley Hall - "No Dreams" [from their forthcoming album i'll follow you. you might remember i did an interview with these guys last november when they were in town. they're coming to local 506 in chapel hill on saturday, september 9th. this new song is fantastic, so i imagine the rest of the record is as well.]
LCD Soundsystem - "Daft Punk is Playing at my House" [by request. from their self-titled debut. a pretty awesome little song, i must say.]
Spoon - "The Ghost of You Lingers" [from the excellent ga ga ga ga ga. more deconstructed pop music from britt daniels. i had someone call me up, ask who this was, then yell "yeah, well spoon sucks!" and then hang up. i didn't say anything on air, but you, sir, are a serious douchebag if you have nothing better to do than call up college stations and mock what they're playing. also, your taste obviously sucks. end of story.]
Tommygun - "Thirteen in the End" [from their latest, flames in winter. great rock and roll from winston-salem, nc.]
>
Okkervil River - "Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe" [the lead track from the new album the stage names which came out yesterday. i really like this track, though does it totally remind anyone else of something they've heard before but just can't pin down? it's been bothering me.]
the Replacements - "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" [from let it be. this was my called-in request, from my hospital bed, to ben when he was covering my show the week of my surgery. sadly we don't have the full version of let it be, so he found "take me down to the hospital" from hootenanny instead. good lad.]
Morphine - "Honey White" [from yes, one of my favorite morphine records. god, i love this band. no one is this cool. and sadly, mark sandman isn't here anymore to still be that damn cool. keep resting in peace.]
Bill Callahan - "Diamond Dancer" [from the woke on a whaleheart album, his first as bill callahan as opposed to his traditional (smog) moniker. i've enjoyed this record quite a bit.]
>
Josh Rouse - "Hollywood Bass Player" [another of the songs i'm actually grooving on from country mouse, city house. the first time i heard this song (and saw its admittedly kinda obnoxious fan-done video) i didn't care for it at all. but now it's growing on me.]
the White Stripes - "Conquest" [by request. from icky thump.]
the Ladybug Transistor - "Always on the Telephone" [i really need to get off this song and play others from can't wait another day. it's first-track syndrome all over again. i'll start reaching deeper next week.]
Bad Religion - "Frogger" [from the 80-85 compilation (which has recently been replaced by the 2004 re-issue/compilation of how could hell be any worse?). i love the timeliness of this song. "playing frogger with my mind."]
>
Thurston Moore - "The Shape is in a Trance" [from his forthcoming second solo album, trees outside the academy. this is a gorgeous song and reportedly most of the record is done with acoustic guitar, bass, drums and violin. i'm really looking forward to it.]
John Doe - "Heartless" [one of the best songs he's put out in awhile, from forever hasn't happened yet. we'll hear more from his new record next week.]
Adam Thorn and the Top Buttons - "Savior Nation" [the song that sounds so much like david bowie's "heroes" that it hurts. but i love it. from the excellent where's the freedom?]
Robert Earl Keen - "Paint the Town Beige" [so i finally bought a copy of a bigger piece of sky so i could figure out if there were songs i liked in addition to "corpus christie bay" and there are. this one, for instance.]
>
the New Pornographers - "My Rights Vs. Yours" [the other previously leaked song from the forthcoming challengers due out in two weeks. oh, god i'm excited.]
Ryan Adams - "Two" [from easy tiger which i still haven't bought. yes, the reviews got in the way. i'm fickle sometimes.]
Blur - "The Universal" [from the great escape. this was the first blur video i ever saw and the first blur album i ever bought. thank you, 120 minutes.]
Matt Pond PA - "If You Want Blood" [i'll be honest, i haven't cared much for matt pond pa over the past several releases. i've found them okay, but nothing really exciting. well, i can't speak for the rest of the EP yet, but the title track off of this is a GREAT song. really. good job, guys.]
>
Art Brut - "Direct Hit" [mad dog called in and said "i started to like this song, then he started talking again like he always does!" i like the talking. i love it's a bit complicated and i love art brut. end of story.]
Jay Farrar - "Clear Day Thunder" [from his quite good debut solo album sebastopol. haven't played anything off it in awhile.]
Matthew Sweet - "Sick of Myself" [the first matthew sweet song i ever heard, saw the video of and from the first matthew sweet album i ever bought: 100% fun. and this song still rocks like nothing else.]
Queens of the Stone Age - "Goin' Out West" [a b-side from the european "sick, sick, sick" single. this is a cover of the tom waits' classic from bone machine. oh, it's a rockin' song indeed.]
>
the Stooges - "Down in the Street" [and i went out with fun house! how's that for a closing set, huh?!?! HUH!?!?!?]

I'll be gone this Sunday night, but the lovely Emily Stewart will be filling in for me on Extra Mayhem. I'll be back for another Indie/Rock Mayhem next Wednesday night. If you'd like to take a listen to Sunday night's show without a playlist (just me filling you in on the podcast) click here. Until then, Go Panthers! Crush those Giants! Take care.
