J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 29th April 2009

[Seriously, people. Tonight was one of the most enjoyable episodes of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem in ages. I have a blast every week, but every so often, a truly amazing show happens and tonight was one of those. I had the pleasure of having both Filthybird and Albina Savoy live in the studio. They're both playing tomorrow night, Thursday, April 30th, at the Green Burro for this month's Dotmatrix Project show. It's DMP's one year anniversary! It was last April when the first DMP show happened and one year later, look at 'em now! The live performances by both are fantastic, as are the interviews. Can't wait to see them both tomorrow.

Now, while I can, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 29th April 2009 Show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the New York Dolls - "'Cause I Sez So" [the title track from their forthcoming album. their second since reuniting and it sounds like it could be just as good as the first. they also re-did the classic "trash" for this one. we'll probably hear that next week.]
the Clash - "Safe European Home" [from give 'em enough rope. god, i love this song. one of my favorite 'ramp up the mood' songs for the show.]
PJ Harvey and John Parish - "Black Hearted Love" [from a woman a man walked by. my mom, apparently, didn't like this song much when i played it the other week. sorry, mom.]
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "The Tenure Itch" [from their self-titled record. they'll be at local 506 in chapel hill next monday, may 4th, and you better believe i'll be there, too.]
>
Patterson Hood - "Pollyanna" [from the forthcoming album murdering oscar. this is different from hood's previous solo record, killers and stars, in that there is a full band on board here. i'm liking it so far.]
Tommy Keene - "Realize Your Mind" [from in the late bright. there are a handful of great songs on this record and this sounds like another.]
the Felice Brothers - "Penn Station" [from yonder is the clock. the felice brothers are up at the berkeley cafe in raleigh this saturday night, may 2nd. i'll be at prom, but you should go see them as they put on a rip roaring show.]
Citified - "Founded" [from absence. citified is having their EP release show on saturday, may 9th at the flat iron here in greensboro and i will be doing a DJ set for all you people to come dance. so, come dance!]

[First interview of the night was with the excellent Albina Savoy. Jon McLean, Crystal Bright and Barry Cantrell make up the band and I wish I had pictures as I doubt I've ever had a stand-up bass, accordion, saw and guitar in the studio at once. We talked about their musical origins, the meaning of community in music, where the name of the band came from and lots of other great stuff. And then there was the music. Enjoy.]

Albina Savoy - "Especially Your Mother" (live) [i let the band open by introducing themselves via song. i do so love accordion. click here to listen.]
Albina Savoy - "Too Afraid" (live) [here's where crystal picked up the saw and went at it. this was a great song. click here to listen.]
Albina Savoy - "Still Believe" (live) [another fantastic song to close the interview. click here to listen.]

Art Brut - "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes" [from art brut vs. satan. another highly amusing, ribald dash across the rock landscape with one of my favorite pithy bands.]
Lake Inferior - "Spiders" [from their self-titled EP. they will be at local 506 in chapel hill on thursday, may 7th, so a chance to check out this spectacular band in action.]

[The second interview was with another fantastic Greensboro band, Filthybird. Renee and Brian, one half of the band, joined us. They're the second act playing Thursday night. They're in the midst of recording their sophomore full length, the follow up to the excellent Southern Skies. We talked about the album, learning about recording, what community means to them and Renee played us a couple of songs and we heard another recorded one.]

Filthybird - "Portraits" (live) [renee's voice is just an amazing instrument all its own. click here to listen.]
Filthybird - "Leaving Trail" (live) [another performance preview of tomorrow night's setlist, though certainly the overall sound. click here to listen.]
Filthybird - "Mostly of Waves" [from the new compulation volume 3 compilation that pulls together a huge amount of NC artists. filthybird are on it, naturally.]

the Crocodiles - "I Wanna Kill" [from summer of hate. this album has been getting mad attention and it's certainly well focused. we'll be hearing more.]
the Smithereens - "House We Used to Live In" [from their sophomore album green thoughts. i did a post about this song over at aquarium drunkard, so go check it out.]
El Michels Affair - "C.R.E.A.M." [from enter the 37th chamber, a collection of instrumental wu-tang clan covers by el michels affair. really interesting and remarkably true to the original sound. well done, live band.]
Lyle Lovett - "Pontiac" [the title track from the album. well, with the brand name going under, i figured, why not? rest in peace, father of the firebird.]
>
the Replacements - "Swingin' Party" [by request. from tim. a nice way to go out, no doubt.]

That'll do it for this week. Thanks again to Filthybird and Albina Savoy for coming by. Also, I will be playing a set this Friday night at the Lyndon St. Art Galleries in Greensboro as part of First Fridays with the Arts. This will be a set of my acoustic music around 7pm. It's a free show and part of a set of short films and other musicians running between 6pm - 9pm this Friday evening. Stop by and say howdy. Until then, take care.
