J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 14th July 2010

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I'm heading to the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this weekend and this show has a bevy of some of the acts I'm most looking forward to catching. While I'm at the festival I'll be live Tweeting performances and posting daily recaps at Aquarium Drunkard so make sure you stay up to date and get in on what's going on. If you're at the fest, say hi!

Now, while the going's good, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 14th July 2010

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Decoration Ghost - "Repay the Spark" [from the haze of wine and age. this band tore it up last saturday at legitimate business here in greensboro and this was the barnstorming set closer. great greensboro rock.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Summerlong" [from back to me. it's a classic summer jam and quite possibly my favorite edwards song. sigh. so good.]
M.I.A. - "Born Free" [from her new album maya. the song samples suicide's "ghost rider" so it's appropriate that sucide's martin rev would appear to help play the song live on letterman. killer.]
Tubeway Army - "Me! I Disconnect From You" [from replicas. an acquaintance of mine (whom i'll mention later) lead me to this advertisement using numan's "cars" to great effect. awesome commercial.]
>
the Love Language - "This Blood is Our Own" [from libraries. excellent new album that you can read my review of over at aquarium drunkard. they're playing their album release show this saturday, july 17th, at the cat's cradle in carborro.]
El-P - "Drive" [from i'll sleep when you're dead. one of the artists i'm most looking forward to seeing at the pitchfork music festival this weekend. when i saw this guy live back in 2007, it was a beast of a show.]
Free Energy - "Dream City" [from stuck on nothing. this is out on DFA records and is being hyped as DFA’s first true “rock band” release or some such. either way, it’s good.]
Bear in Heaven - "Lovesick Teenagers" [from beast rest forth mouth. another of the pitchfork bands i'm dying to see.]
>
the Mynabirds - "Let the Record Go" [by request. from what we lost in the fire we gained in the flood. this album is a year-end best-of without question.]
Jews and Catholics - "Thank God I Don't Live In Your Eyes" [from who are? we think we are! great winston-salem, north carolina rock and roll. it was eddie from j&c that tipped me off to that gary numan commercial. awesome.]
Local Natives - "Shape Shifter" [from gorilla manor. another pitchfork band for me to finally see. woo!]
Superchunk - "Rainy Streets" [from here's to shutting up, their most recent new full length LP from 2001. that is until majesty shredding drops this fall! yay for new superchunk!]
>
Best Coast - "Boyfriend" [from crazy for you. i can't get over this song. i can't wait to see them do it live this weekend at pitchfork so i can exorcise it. check out aquarium drunkard’s review.]
the Beastie Boys - "Hey Ladies" [from paul's boutique. there was a beasties question at trivia last night, so i thought i'd throw on a classic.]
Beach House - "Used to Be" [from teen dream. another pitchfork band. sorry for the short descriptions on these bands, but hey, this is the purpose of this week's show.]
Track a Tiger - "Glad to Be Scattered" [from woke up early the day i died. a band from chicago that i wish was playing at pitchfork. love this band.]
>
Titus Andronicus - "A More Perfect Union" [from the monitor. another pitchfork band i'm excited to see live.]
Tommy Keene - "Long Time Missing" [from isolation party from 1998. a long time member of the power pop community in the united states. great stuff.]
Megafaun - "Volunteers" [from the excellent new heretofore EP. get it if you haven't. seriously.]
Pavement - "Grounded" [from wowee zowee. this is THE band i'm most excited to see at pitchfork. i never saw the band when they were originally together, so this is going to be awesome.]
>
Futurebirds - "APO" [from the forthcoming hampton's lullaby which is super, super good. they're playing on friday, july 30th at snug harbor in charlotte.]
Dwight Yoakam - "I Played Dixie" (1981 demo) [from guitars, cadillacs, etc. etc. deluxe edition. by the time dwight put this on a proper album, he'd removed the snippet of "dixie" guitar line that i think adds so much to the song here. a shame, but glad this demo exists.]
Stornoway - "The End of the Movie" [from beachcomber's windowsill. one of my favorite records of this year, without question.]
Wilco - "Via Chicago" [from summerteeth. felt it important to throw on this song since i'll be going home via chicago. sort of. i mean, i'm leaving home, to go to chicago, to come back home. so, yeah.]
Ben Gibbard/Jay Farrar - "These Roads Don't Move" [by request. from one fast move and i'm gone. i didn't give this much of a fair listen when it came out, but this song is pretty nice.]
>
the National - "England" [from high violet. really dig this song and it will probably end up on my year-end singles list. this album is a slow grower for me. i haven't been in the right somber mood.]
Randy Newman - "Marie" [from good ol' boys. one of my favorite randy newman songs and, really, the first one i consciously heard by him. i'd heard stuff before, but hadn't paid him any mind. when i heard this, i knew i'd been mistaken.]

That'll do it for this week. Don't for get to follow me on Twitter while I'm at the Pitchfork Music Festival and check for daily recaps of the fest at Aquarium Drunkard. Until next week, take care.
