J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 1st December 2010

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight combined a 'best of the rest' mentality along with some stone cold classics and a few other things worked in - some of the best live performances from this year on the show, for instance - to make a really fantastic show. In the coming weeks we have the annual Best Singles of the Year show (Dec. 8th) and the 9th annual Top 25 Albums of the Year (Dec. 15th) and the Christmas Spectacular (Dec. 22nd), so lots to look forward to in the coming weeks here on the show.

Now, while the gettin's good, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 1st December 2010 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Bad Religion - "Cyanide" [from the dissent of man. 'best of the rest' was a quasi theme of this show and this is certainly one of my favorite songs of this year, but not quite bound for the 'best singles' show next week.]
Matthew Sweet - "Where You Get Love" [from blue sky on mars. in addition, this is the last show of the year (well, until the 29th) where i'll be playing what i want rather than doing year-end or holiday-related stuff, so i piled on the classics.]
the Joy Formidable - "Austere" [from a balloon called moaning. it was announced this week that this welsh band's new album will be out in march of next year on atlantic here in the states. pretty exciting. can't wait to hear it.]
Cold Water Shave - "One Horse Blues" [from grand old uproar. more new music from this great greensboro band whose new album was produced by the delightful and talented snuzz. we'll hear more and hopefully have them up on the show in a few weeks.]
>
Dom - "Burn Bridges" [from sun bronzed greek gods. a record i was just sent yesterday - self-released earlier this year, but bound for a label re-release next year. really good. we'll hear more.]
P.O.S. - "Low Light Low Life" [from never better. one of my favorite singles of last year - in fact, my favorite single of last year. never gets old. "lean to the left / call me 'terrorist' / rock wit it."]
Wavves - "Mickey Mouse" [from king of the beach. one of the wqfs sponsored shows from this year and one of my favorite songs as well. great stuff.]
the Replacements - "Nobody" [by request. from all shook down. had this stuck in my head earlier this week from some writing i was doing and needed to exercise it. so thanks for the request, frank.]
>
the Twilight Singers - "Blackbird and the Fox" [from the forthcoming dynamite steps. also thanks to frank for hipping me to the newly leaked first single off the forthcoming twilight singers album. i'm terribly excited for this record in february.]
Velocity Girl - "Tripping Wires" [from simpatico! if you've never heard this album, shame on you. go fix that. now. and then check out the clever thing i did here..]
Primal Scream - "Velocity Girl" [from the c-86 compilation. see? the song the band was named after right after a song by the band. hah! by the way, the upcoming 20th anniversary reissue of primal scream's screamadelica is looking ridiculously cool. i want one.]
the Alcazar Hotel - "In Between the In Between" (live) [recorded live on the show in september of this year. one of my favorite live interviews of this year and certainly one of the best live performances, too.]
>
James - "Crazy" [from the morning after the night before. i'll be honest. i think i knew that james was still releasing things, but i'll be damned if i could name you anything beyond "laid." but that's being american for you. that said, this song makes me really interested in the new album.]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Don't Go Away" [from pale. i think i'm going to have to do a write-up about this album at some point - it rivals their dulcinea as my favorite toad album and, seriously, it's really good.]
Delta Spirit - "Bushwick Blues" [from history from below. this is one of the bands that accidentally got on this week that you'll almost certainly hear next week on the best singles show as well. can't help it. it's too good.]
Caleb Caudle - "Red Bank Road" (live) [recorded live on the show in april of this year. caleb and the bayonets will be playing at the garage in winston-salem on friday, december 10th along with lake isle. ought to be a great show.]
>
Belle and Sebastian - "Write About Love" [the title track from their latest. i'm enjoying this record the more i hear it, but the life pursuit set a really high standard for me and i haven't really felt this one living up to it yet. alas.]
Tricky - "Christiansands" [from pre-millennial tension. picked this up this week. i think this is the first tricky song i consciously remember hearing and it's stuck with me for quite some time. i still love it.]
Lake Isle - "Anodyne" [from wake up. great greensboro shoe gaze rock and roll.]
Romancer - "The World is Exploding" (live) [recorded live on the show in september of this year. i love jonathan moore's songwriting and this is another great example of it.]
>
Steve Wynn and Miracle 3 - "Resolution" [from northern aggression. this new album came out on november 30th and i'm really digging it still. a definite must for any old dream syndicate fans who haven't delved into wynn's solo work.]
Justin Currie - "A Man With Nothing to Do" [from the great war. the former del amitri frontman's second solo record is full of some great songs like this.]
Burnt Ones - "Gonna Listen to T. Rex (All Night Long)" [from black teeth, golden tongues. i probably should have saved this for next week - it really is an amazing song from a really solid record.]
Crystal Bright and the Silver Hands - "Corpus Callosum" (live) [recorded live on the show in october of this year. one of the most unique live performances from this year, no question.]
>
North Elementary - "Hilcrest 101" [from southern rescue trails. saw them play this live a week or so ago at CFBGs here in greensboro and it was fantastic. great chapel hill rock from a very reliable band.]
the Housemartins - "Bow Down" [by request. from now that's what i call quite good. "loyal listener" brooke called this one in and i was only too happy to fulfill it. thanks for calling.]
Glasser - "Glad" [from ring. more great stuff from this really fantastic record. we'll, undoubtedly, be hearing more.]
Josh Ritter - "When I Paint My Masterpiece" (live) [recorded live on the show in july of 2007. i was reminded of my live interview with josh from back in 2007 earlier this week and i thought i'd break out this great cover he did of this dylan song. he would play this occasionally on his subsequent live tours, though i never heard it again. and as he says in the intro, he'd never played it before. so maybe this is a recording of the first time he covered it live? maybe. awesome all the same.]

That'll do it for this week. Next week will be the Best Singles of 2010 show, so make sure you tune in for all the great, pop song glory. Until then, Go Panthers!, and take care.
