J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 16th March 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I was joined in studio tonight by Josh Kimbrough and Patrick Jones of the band Butterflies out of Chapel Hill. They're playing this Saturday night at the Green Bean along with Matty Sheets and the Blockheads as part of the Hand-to-Hand Market. Show starts at 8pm. Check out below for the interview and some live performances.

We'll be back to just the regular show next week, although in two weeks should be the return of the J's Indie/Rock Roundtable. Stay tuned for details.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 16th March 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Telekinesis - "50 Ways" [from 12 desperate straight lines. these guys put on a whale of a show on sunday night at local 506. if you can catch michael lerner and company live, do so with a quickness.]
the Darkness - "Best of Me" [from the get your hands off my woman single. word is that the darkness is getting back together? is it so? i'll tell you that that debut album is still just a great slice of big, dumb rock and roll. clever to boot.]
Hammer No More the Fingers - "Shark" [from black shark. great music from more north carolina bands. we'll be hearing more of this as well.]
Teenage Fanclub - "The Concept" [from bandwagonesque. on sunday night, michael lerner pulled out the acoustic and did a cover of this teenage fanclub classic. pretty awesome to say the least.]
>
the Decemberists - "This is Why We Fight" [from the king is dead. one of my favorites from the new album. this record is really, really solid, people.]
Sloan - "Follow the Leader" / "The Answer Was You" [from the upcoming the double cross. i'm at a bit of a loss and i talk about this on the podcast: the opening three tracks on this album are a masterful collision of songs that just run into each other. love it as a listener, hate it as a DJ. so i decided to at least play the first two together.]
Adam Thorn and the Top Buttons - "Through That Hallway" [from their self-titled sophomore album. genuinely good stuff.]

[Here's where I did my interview with Butterflies. We talked about their history as a band, bringing Patrick into the fold for their recent record, Residual Child, getting on with Trekky Records and heard a few live songs as well. Enjoy.]

Butterflies - "Goodbye (Like a Stranger)" (live) [the first single off of their latest record. a great little song. click here to listen.]
Butterflies - "Serious Fun" (live) [the lead track off of the new album - great li'l weezer reference in it as well. click here to listen.]
Butterflies - "Snowball Fight" (live) [a song unreleased anywhere else, so an exclusive. i feel special. check it out. click here to listen.]
>
Butterflies - "Sunday Afternoon" [from residual child. another great song from their new album. don't forget to catch them saturday night at the green bean along with matty sheets and the blockheads starting at 8pm.]
Prince - "When You Were Mine" [from dirty mind. so, i totally got tickets to see his royal badness in less than two weeks here in greensboro. i am suitably excited.]
the Twilight Singers - "When Doves Cry" [a pretty solid cover of this prince classic by greg dulli and company.]
Smith Westerns - "Weekend" [from dye it blonde. lead track from their latest. hope i get a chance to see them live again and re-evaluate my thoughts.]
>
tUnE-yArDs - "Bizness" [from w h o k i l l. they have a new record coming out in april on 4AD and this is the first single - i'm digging it. we'll hear more.]
Dirty Gold - "California Sunrise" [the first single from this san diego band for the autumn tone label. available on iTunes now with the EP on its way.]
the Fantasies - "Stuck in My World" [an unsolicited email submission this week from a band from up north. i was digging this song and it's free to grab, so go get it!. they'll be happy. i think.]
the Whigs - "In the Dark" [the title track from their latest. still really excited that these guys are playing at the blind tiger on april 5th. going to be an awesome night of rock.]
>
New York Dolls - "Fool For You Baby" [from dancing backwards in high heels. so who knew the new york dolls were putting out another record? i do find the production on this not nearly as good as on the first two reunion records, but it's got some great songs. plus, check out this interview with david johansen over at the AV club.]
Beastie Boys - "An Open Letter to NYC" [from to the 5 boroughs. so a release date for the new beasties album, hot sauce committee part 2 was finally announced this week for early may. cannot wait.]
the Streets - "Going through Hell" [from computers and blues. where i will still go to bat for the first two streets albums, checking out mike skinner's work has turned increasingly into a chore rather than pleasure. we'll see when i get done actually listening to this album all the way through, but in the meantime, here's the first single.]
Patti Smith - "Break It Up" [from horses. i've finally begun reading smith's just kids this week and it is brilliant. just absolutely awesome. so here's some patti in tribute.]

That'll do it for this week. Tune in next week for more great music, but until then, Go Heels!, and take care.
