J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 31st August 2011

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. First off, I'd like to take a moment to thank all of the kind listeners who wrote in about last week's show, whether it was just to express shared sorrow over Tim's passing or even to say, on some occasions, that despite not knowing Tim, the show moved them in some way. I had a lot of fun with that show, despite the terrible circumstances that caused it to happen, and I loved hearing the positive reinforcement from you guys. Many, many thanks.

Due to some last minute wrangling, Ryan Snyder couldn't join us again this week, but he is almost most assuredly going to be with us next week for Indie/Rock Roundtable as we give our Hopscotch Fest preview and finally catch up on all the good new music that's been out.

I was joined in studio by WQFS trainee Eli who is gearing up to be a new DJ this semester. He took over the board at the very end, so I hope you enjoy his work. Keep your ears peeled for him on the air this fall.

Now, while we can, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 31st August 2011 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the Wombats - "Girls/Fast Cars" [from this modern glitch. cruel cromer called to, rightly, complain that he was hearing this song elsewhere on the radio dial and, i admit, it's a little slick for our normal playlists. but i do kind of have a soft spot for this song. so, last time you'll hear the wombats on the show.]
Verbena - "Six White Horses" [from verbena is the alabama boys choir. a pretty awesome little EP that predated the release of their la musica negra album. there's a new a.a. bondy record on the way, too, soon, i hear. can't wait.]
Sloan - "Unkind" [okay. time to retire the double cross. but i can't help myself. seriously. power pop rarely gets this good.]
Public Image Ltd. - "Swan Lake" [from second edition. funky, caustic and infectious. that epitome of post-punk.]
>
Blitzen Trapper - "Fletcher" [from the new american goldwing. really would like to catch these guys live sometime soon.]
the Church - "Reptile" [from starfish. i heard this song on WQFS years and years ago and instantly became a fan of the church.]
the War on Drugs - "Brothers" [from slave ambient. more good stuff from a pretty solid record.]
Elastica - "Stutter" [from their self-titled debut. seriously. this record is still one of my absolute favorites of the 90s. shamelessly aping post-punk greats and making it sound original, even in its obvious theivery. that's a great band.]
>
Tommy Stinson - "All This Way for Nothing" [from the new one man mutiny that came out this week. a pretty solid record so far. we'll hear more.]
the Jayhawks - "Tailspin" [from rainy day music. and lo and behold, the jayhawks are releasing their first new album in nearly a decade later this year. exciting.]
Yellow Ostrich - "Left Behind" [a cover of the beat happening classic. a pretty awesome cover, too.]
Citified - "KL Gala" [from the meeting after the meeting. certifiable, stone-cold greensboro classic rock and roll.]
>
Cymbals Eat Guitars - "Keep Me Waiting" [from the new lenses alien. i really enjoyed their last album, so i'm looking forward into digging more into this one.]
Patti Smith - "Free Money" [from horses. there's also a new best-of collection that has come out. patti always has been more of an album artist, but it's still full of great songs.]
Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter - "Ceilings High" [from marble son. easily one of my favorite songs on this new album.]
Placebo - "Without You I'm Nothing" [the title track from their sophomore album and maybe my favorite song of theirs of all time.]
>
Glen Campbell - "Hold on Hope" [from the new ghost on the canvas. this is a cover of the guided by voices classic from their do the collapse album and campbell really nails it. we'll hear more.]
the Cash Brothers - "Nebraska" [from how was tomorrow? just one of those great meta-music songs. all about the springsteen album.]
Fountains of Wayne - "Someone's Gonna Break Your Heart" [from sky full of holes. seriously. this song. jeez.]
Big Black - "The Model" [from songs about fucking. as my trainee said: "are they playing a chainsaw on the record?" close.]
>
Male Bonding - "Tame the Sun" [the lead track from endless now. really digging this album so far.]
Sonic Youth - "Eric's Trip" [from daydream nation. this is where eli took over for the rest of the show.]
Beck - "Lost Cause" [from sea change.]
Modest Mouse - "3rd Planet" [from the moon and antarctica.]
DJ Shadow - "Broken Levee Blues" [from the outsider.]
Fleet Foxes - "Quiet Houses" [from their self-titled debut LP.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next week with Indie/Rock Roundtable and more great new music. Until then, take care.
