J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 11th January 2012

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Good to be back with my first official podcast of 2012, but also getting started on a great year of music. We've already got a ton of great new music coming down the pipe and tonight is a great example of that. This really was a tremendous show as a listener. As much as I'm the one programming this stuff, I'm just as much a listener as you all are.

Not gonna waste any time, so onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 11th January 2012 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Real Estate - "Easy" [from days. from last year's album, but the band has a hilarious new video out for this single, so check it out.]
At the Drive-In - "One Armed Scissor" [from relationship of command. it was announced this week that the band is getting back together; i know i'm not in the frame of mind to really get psyched about loud rock and roll much anymore, but if these guys could make another record as good as relationship of command, then sign me up.]
Onward, Soldiers - "Cinder Blocks" [from monster. north carolina band from their new album. digging this song.]
Matthew Sweet - "We're the Same" [from 100% fun. one of my favorite matthew sweet singles of all time. such amazing harmonies.]
>
the Joy Formidable - "Cradle" [from last year's the big more. i wasn't on this band much last year, but i do really enjoy them and want to catch them live sometime. can you imagine this stuff live? jeez.]
Son Volt - "Straightface" [from wide swing tremolo. the lead track from the third and final album from the first versison of the band.]
the Bevis Frond - "Johnny Kwango" [from the leaving of london. this came out last fall, but nick saloman deserves kudos for his amazing power pop, so since we missed it, here it is.]
the Damnwells - "What You Get" [from bastards of the beat. the damnwells won me over by me accidentally seeing them three times within a year as they constantly seemed to be opening for bands i went to see. by the third time, i was hooked.]
>
Disappears - "Replicate" [from pre-language. really digging this. we'll hear a lot more.]
the Stooges - "I Wanna Be Your Dog" [from their self-titled debut. the disappears song had this stooges throb to it that i couldn't ignore, so i thought i'd throw this on.]
First Aid Kit - "Emmylou" [from the lion's roar. the pipes on these ladies. we'll be hearing a lot more of this.]
Veronica Falls - "Thorn in My Side" [from 5 covers. this was released as part of record store day, if i remember correctly. this is their cover of the eurythmics' classic.]
>
Kathleen Edwards - "Sidecar" [from voyageur. this albm finally drops next week and you can check the album out streaming over at NPR. it's really, really solid. she' s playing at the cat's cradle on tuesday, january 31st, also.]
Pulp - "The Trees" [from we love life. it was just announced this week that the reunited pulp will be playing at coachella this year. sigh. wish i could go.]
the Roots - "Tip the Scale" [from undun. wrote up this song over at aquarium drunkard this past week. check it out.]
Michael Penn - "Don't Let Me Go" [from mp4: days since a lost time accident. i think i've been playing this song since i first started this show. such a great song.]
>
King Khan and the Shrines - "Bite My Tongue" [from a split 7" with mikal kronin. one of the best king khan songs i've heard in some time. quite groovy, in the literal sense.]
the Beastie Boys - "Shadrach" [from paul's boutique. i wrote a piece about this song over at aquarium drunkard awhile back and i'm still proud of it.]
Jim White - "Chase the Dark Away" [from the forthcoming where it hits you. a really, really good record. here's hoping jim can come be on the show this year.]
Dave Davies - "Do You Wish to Be a Man" [from hidden treasure. caught this on a blog that, sadly, i don't remember. unearthed, un-released dave davies solo record from '69 that finally got a somewhat proper release this past year. great stuff.]
>
the Wrong Words - "Summer's Gone" [from their self-titled album. a song i picked up via the folks at bull city records blog. well worth regular reading, especially for north carolina folk.]
Superchunk - "Late Century Dream" [from here's to shutting up. just a truly gorgeous song. and i think i've used the word 'gorgeous' too much in this post.]
Hospitality - "Argonauts" [from their self-titled debut. really enjoying their new record. we'll be hearing more.]
Ben Lee - "Pointless Beauty" (live) [from his recent daytrotter session and originally from last year's deeper into dream. been catching up on the showtime series homeland and, admittedly, i thought of ben lee as the show stars his ex-girlfriend claire danes. ah, the 90s.]
>
Riviera - "Hopeless" [from watching western skies. great band. we'll be hearing more.]
the Mountain Goats - "Thucydides II-58" [a stray song released via twitter late last year from some work john darnielle has been doing. sounds like classic 'goats stuff.]
Heron - "Yellow Roses" [from their self-titled record. a more gorgeous album i don't think I've heard recently. well worth tracking down if you like stuff like this. i first heard of this album thanks to an article in the believer in 2010. (sadly, can't read the whole thing at that link.) so glad to finally hear it.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next week, probably with trainees, and a lot more new stuff. Until then, take care.

Great two hours of music here. I really dug the Riviera track - is that from an album that's out or upcoming?

It's from their latest EP which is already out. You can grab it for free over at the Captain's Dead blog for a limited time. That's where I picked it up.

If it's already down over there, then you can purchase it from the usual online suspects. Check out the band's site for more info. Glad you dug it.
