J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 25th January 2012

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. My trainees didn't show up this week - which was fine, considering I had Ryan Snyder from YES Weekly in for our monthly Indie/Rock Roundtable. We had a great time discussing new releases from Nada Surf, Lambchop and some quickie reviews of new Of Montreal and Cloud Nothings. Always a great time with Ryan, so take a listen below.

The show times for the spring semester will be set this Sunday evening. I should be in my normal spot, but I do work at the pleasure of the student managers, so if anything changes, you'll hear it here or on Twitter first. I feel like the shows have gotten a lot better in the last few weeks and I'm looking forward to making this the best year of the show yet.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 25th January 2012

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Hospitality - "Friends of Friends" [from their self-titled record which is really quite solid. we'll keep hearing more.]
Decoration Ghost - "Father's Fist" [from the haze of wine and age. sad this band had to call it a day before they got a second album in the can, but man, what a record.]
Cardinal
- "Carbolic Smoke Ball" [from their first album in 18 years, hymns. i'll be honest, i've never heard the previous cardinal output, so wasn't sure what the fuss over this release finally arriving was. but we'll see.]
Teenage Head - "You're Tearin' Me Apart" [from their self-titled debut. late 70s canada's answer to the ramones. pretty rockin' song.]

[Here's where Ryan and I jumped in to do the Roundtable bit. Our final votes on the albums - Nada Surf's The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy got a split vote, thumbs down from Ryan and thumbs up from me. Lambchop's Mr. M got a unanimous thumbs up from us. Take a listen to the podcast to check out the songs and hear our more specific thoughts on each as well as our thoughts on records from Of Montreal and Cloud Nothings.]

Nada Surf - "Waiting For Something" [from the stars are indifferent to astronomy.]
Nada Surf - "Jules and Jim" [from the new album also.]
Lambchop - "If Not I'll Just Die" [from mr. m.]
Lambchop
- "The Good Life (Is Wasted)" [also from mr. m.]
>
Of Montreal - "We Will Commit Wolf Murder" [from the forthcoming paralytic stalks. ryan's pretty high on this one.]
Cloud Nothings - "No Future/No Past" [from attack on memory. i'm pretty high on this one and we'll definitely hear more.]
Juliana Hatfield
- "What a Life" [from only everything. i guess it was all this watching of homeland recently and seeing claire danes all the time that made me think of juliana hatfield. props to anyone who can correctly explain why they would be connected in my head in the comments.]
Riviera
- "Destiny" [from watching western skies. got a positive response from long-time listener justin in the comments a couple of shows back on the last riviera song i played, so here's some more.]
>
Lucero - "Sometimes" [from the forthcoming women and work. pretty nice little song and i'm looking forward to the rest of the album.]
Pulp - "Babies" [from his 'n' hers. so excited to hear that pulp was adding more american tour dates for their swing through to play coachella. bummed to hear that the only east coast date was a wednesday night in new york city.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Chameleon/Comedian" [from voyageur. really enjoying this record and hopefully i'll be heading to the cat's cradle in carborro next tuesday for her live show as it comes through town on the 31st.]
Handsome Boy Modeling School - "I've Been Thinking" [going back to 2004's white people and the song from the record featuring cat power on vocal. always really enjoyed it.]
>
Craig Finn - "Terrified Eyes" [from clear heart full eyes, the hold steady front man's new solo album. not a bad little song.]
Jim White
- "Infinite Mind" [from the forthcoming where it hits you. really enjoying this record a lot.]
Dinosaur Jr. - "Start Choppin'" [from where you been? since my wife and i have done a fair bit of wood splitting this week, it felt appropriate to play this. from the title of it at least. not much else.]

That'll do it for this week. I should be back next week with more great new music, so until then, take care.
