J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 8th February 2012

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. I'm super excited to be back in my usual Wednesday night slot as the semester gets under way. However, some interesting news to report. Guilford College has been hard at work over the past few years doing some awesome upgrades to the campus and the second floor of Founders Hall, home to WQFS, is finally up for renovation. The new radio station, from what I've heard, is going to be awesome.

Now for the bad news. This means that for an undetermined amount of time - most likely starting in late April and stretching through the summer - WQFS is going to be off the air. I haven't quite figured out what that means for my show yet. Most likely I will shift to some sort of format where I'm doing a show every other week and possibly for only an hour. Why the downgrade? Since I'll be creating the podcasts at home, it's most likely that I will want to try and save myself some of the work. If things work out okay, I may try to do a two-hour show still, but it won't be any more frequent than every other week. I hate to do that, but it's a sanity saving thing. Going to the station, using the equipment to create the show and recording it as I do it is a lot easier than putting together a podcast, I'm sure.

Now, with that said, I'm going to do everything to make every show until then spectacular and I think tonight is an awesome start. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 8th February 2012 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Pop. 1280 - "New Electronix" [from the horror. pretty dark, brooding and, yes, downright horrifying (in a good way) music. we'll hear a lot more.]
Girls Against Boys - "Super-fire" [from house of gvsb. in pitchfork's review of the album, they compared aspects of the previous pop. 1280 song to girls against boys. so there you go. from my favorite of their albums.]
Doomtree - "Bangarang" [from no kings. they're going to be at local 506 in chapel hill this sunday night. can. not. wait.]
Pulp - "This Is Hardcore" [the title track from their 1998 album. been thinking this album over a lot lately, so wanted to play this. got an excited listener calling in to confirm that, yes, this was indeed pulp. always a good thing.]
>
A Place to Bury Strangers - "So Far Away" [from the onwards to the wall EP. one of the loudest shows i've ever seen was this band on tour for their last LP, so let's hope they come around again. i'm tired of being able to hear.]
Sleeper - "Nice Guy Eddie" [from the it girl. was actually thinking about the song "good luck, mr. gorsky" this week and whether or not the story behind the title of the song was actually true. i think i'd rather just assume yes and never really know.]
M.I.A. - "Bad Girls" [the new single from her forthcoming album. i think i really like this song, honestly. i'm looking forward to hearing the album.]
the Happy Mondays - "Loose Fit" [from pills 'n' thrills and bellyaches. i thought i'd keep the show grooving. so i hope you were dancing. i was.]
>
Sharon Van Etten - "We Are Fine" [from tramp. haven't dug all the way through this album yet, but i really like it so far. we'll be hearing a lot more. sharon, seriously, open invite to come be on my show.]
That Petrol Emotion - "A Million Miles Away" [from manic pop thrill. one of my favorite songs from this band's debut.]
Royal Baths - "Burned" [from better luck next life. these folks are going to be at the blind tiger here in greensboro this friday night, february 10th. from the sound of this song, ought to be good.]
Grandpaboy - "Lush and Green" [from the self-titled EP. one of the most beautiful and perfect songs paul westerberg has ever written.]
>
Imperial Teen - "No Matter What You Say" [from feel the sound. really excited that these guys finally have a new album out and it's really good, too.]
Casual Curious - "Remote Control" [from lungs. huzzah to hear new music from this greensboro band. really dig this track. we'll hear a lot more.]
Shana Falana - "In the Light" [the title track from her new EP. it's been awhile since an unsolicitied promo email of music has grabbed me in the way this EP has. good stuff.]
Wipers - "Is This Real?" [the title track from their debut album. because i hadn't played enough wipers in awhile. so here.]
>
the Magnetic Fields - "Andrew in Drag" [from love at the bottom of the sea. a really fun and funny song from the first new magnetic fields record in some time. they're going to be at the cat's cradle for back-to-back nights on april 11th and 12th, so get your tickets.]
Fountains of Wayne - "Someone's Gonna Break Your Heart" [from sky full of holes. these guys are playing the cat's cradle this coming saturday night, february 11th. needless to say, i'm super excited.]
Archers of Loaf - "Harnessed in Slums" [from vee vee. the remastered reissue of this record drops soon and the archers are off on another set of tours. they'll be at the haw river ballroom in saxapahaw on friday, may 11th and at king's in raleigh on saturday, may 12th.]
Hospitality - "Eighth Avenue" [from their self-titled album. their new record is superb and you can catch them opening for tennis at local 506 in chapel hill on friday, march 9th.]
>
Dr. Dog - "Get Away" [from be the void. their new one snuck up on me, but this song sounds promising. we'll hear more.]
Jim White - "Chase the Dark Away" [from where it hits you. jim's new album drops in two weeks. you should get it because it's excellent.]
Leonard Cohen - "Crazy to Love You" [from old ideas. and speaking of excellent, yeah. just too good for words.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Change the Sheets" [from voyageur. hate that i missed it, but from what i heard, her show in chapel hill was fantastic.]
>
Brendan Benson - "Bad for Me" [from what kind of world. good to hear brendan has a new solo record coming out.]
the High Strung - "On Your Way Up" [from posible o imposible? haven't heard from the high strung in awhile. good to hear them in top form on this song.]
Cloud Nothings - "Stay Useless" [from attack on memory. well, it's rock and roll. and i like it.]

That will do it for this week. I'll be back next week with more fantastic new and classic music, so until then, take care.

I'd take an hour every other week. I'd hate to see the show disappear for months but you have to do what's best for your sanity.

Liked the juxtaposition of the Doomtree and Pulp tracks. New Brendan Benson is always welcome.
