J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 28th March 2012

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. This week's show was a whole lot of fun and I had a blast putting this playlist together. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as well. Ryan Snyder of YES Weekly should be joining us next week for the next edition of Indie/Rock Roundtable. Ought to be a lot of fun as usual.

Going to keep it short and sweet this week. Onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 28th March 2012 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Frankie Rose - "Night Swim" [from interstellar. there's a new video for this song that premiered this week. check it out.]
Television - "See No Evil" [from marquee moon. i'm always kind of amazed that i liked this record as much as i did in high school. i'm less amazed that i've grown to love it more and more as the years go by.]
Hospitality - "The Birthday" [from their self-titled album. really digging this record. might sneak onto my year-end list after all.]
Superchunk - "The First Part" [from foolish. got this stuck in my head randomly on the day of the show, so i had to play it. god, it rocks.]
>
the Bayonets - "Flickering Lantern Low" [from driver. excited to see the bayonets here in greensboro this saturday, march 31st at the green bean along with drag sounds and the old one-two.]
New York Dolls - "Looking for a Kiss" [from their self-titled debut. when i say i'm in love, you best believe i'm in love, l-u-v.]
Polica - "Violent Games" [from give you the ghost. like this song, so we're going to hear a lot more.]
Luna - "Rhythm King" [from penthouse. did an interview with dean wareham of luna that went up at aquarium drunkard this week. excited to see him and britta phillips do their 13 most beautiful.. warhol screen tests performance at SECCA this friday, march 30th as well.]
>
Delta Spirit - "Empty House" [from their self-titled third album. my initial listen to this record just killed. can this band do any wrong? the answer seems to be nope.]
Sonic Youth - "100%" [from dirty. this record sometimes gets a bad rap, and i know i'm a weirdo for saying it, but pretty much all of my favorite sonic youth records are from the 90s.]
Nite Jewel - "Mind Eyes" [from one second of love. enjoying this record a lot more than i thought i would.]
Geraldine Fibbers - "California Tuffy" [from butch. i talk about this on the podcast, but as much positive press as this record got, the band just doesn't ever get talked about in terms of great 90s bands. anyone else out there a fan?]
>
Gentleman Jesse - "I'm Only  Lonely" [from leaving atlanta. i'd heard a bit about gentleman jesse's last record, but didn't get my ears on it. sounds like i need to fix that with this new one.]
the Db's - "Spy in the House of Love" [from like this. the db's have recorded new material and are putting together a new album that, apparently, sounds pretty heavy. looking forward to that.]
Midtown Dickens - "Only Brother" [from home. this will probably end up on my year-end singles show for sure. just a gorgeous song from the durham band.]
Bobby Womack - "Woman's Gotta Have It" [from understanding. the great r&b legend just got out of the hospital after a bout with pneumonia. he's also dealing with cancer right now, so here's to a great and his hopeful recovery.]
>
Lee Ranaldo - "Tomorrow Never Comes" [from between the tides and times. nice little beatles nicking here in the sound and title. this was the concert calendar set. ranaldo and band will be opening for m. ward on tuesday, may 15th at page auditorium at duke university.]
Megafaun - "These Words" [from their self-titled record from last year. the boys will be at the haw river ballroom in saxapahaw, NC on saturday, april 14th. ]
Horse Feathers - "Fit Against the Country" [from cynic's new year. they'll be at local 506 in chapel hill on tuesday, may 15th.]
Iron Maiden - "The Trooper" [from piece of mind. they'll be at verizon wireless amphitheater in charlotte on thursday, june 21st with alice cooper opening! good god.]
>
Paul Weller - "That Dangerous Age" [from sonik kicks. not sure what i think of this new one yet. might be up next week on our roundtable discussion.]
Nine Inch Nails - "Get Down Make Love" [a cover of the queen classic from the "sin" single. i was inspired by this video which showed up on music blogs and sites yesterday of nine inch nails performing "down in it" from pretty hate machine on dance party USA. check it out.]
Rocket Juice & the Moon - "Poison" [from their self-titled record. this is a new project between blur's damon albarn, red hot chili peppers' flea and tony allen of fela kuti. digging this song.]
Casual Curious - "G.G.Y.M." [from lungs. great new greensboro music from a great greensboro band.]
Sharon Van Etten - "Warsaw" [from tramp. i wrote about this song this week over at aquarium drunkard as well. pretty awesome opener to a pretty fantastic record.]
>
Jack White - "You Know That I Know" [from the lost notebooks of hank williams. this is a record similar to the mermaid avenue albums - lyrics from a great songwriter that never had music written. jack white is just one of many on this collection and i'm not sure how i missed this last year. love this song though.]
the Velvet Underground - "Venus in Furs" [from the velvet underground and nico. since i'm heading to SECCA to see dean wareham and britta phillips do their music for warhol's screen tests, i thought it appropriate to play some velvets. enjoy.]

That'll do it for this week. Ryan Snyder should be with us next week for the next Roundtable, so until then, take care.

Such a wide variety this time around. You usually have it but I think the Iron Maiden put it over the top :) I'm really going to miss the full show over the summer.
