J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 11th April 2012

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. So we got the final word this week of our sign-off date for our renovation project: April 18th. So that means that next week, I get the honor of being one of the last DJs to DJ in our current studio. It also means that next week will be a certifiable party. Mad Dog is already definitely coming up as a guest - we'll have to see if we can get some other DJs up there as well. Already know what my send-off song will be. Exciting.

This week's show is stupid good, point blank, so let's get to it. Onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 11th April 2012 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Screaming Females - "Rotten Apple" [from ugly. really digging this record the more i get into it. we'll hear more next week most likely.]
Girls Against Boys - "Tucked In" [the lead track from cruise yourself. one of the bands that actually made me feel cool by listening to them in high school. yeah. i was that kid.]
Royal Baths - "Darling Divine" [from better luck next life. i wish i'd seen these guys when they were at the blind tiger. kinda kicking myself about that.]
Ned's Atomic Dustbin - "All I Ask of Myself is That I Hold Together" [from brainbloodvolume. one of the many bands i first heard of through beavis & butt-head oddly enough. there are many of those.]
>
Pond - "Fantastic Explosion of Time" [from beard, wives, denim. thanks to frank for the mention of these guys. enjoying this record quite a bit so far.]
Midnight Oil - "Blue Sky Mine" [from blue sky mining. yes, one of the bigger singles by this band, but i swear i never hear them anymore. great song, still.]
Delta Spirit - "Tear It Up" [from their self-titled record. really, really good as ryan snyder and i discovered in our discussion last week.]
Danger Mouse - "What More Can I Say" [from the grey album. a kind of annoying caller wanted to hear the beatles. so i gave him this. if you know why that's funny, good.]
>
Patti Smith - "April Fool" [from banga. really love this single and am really looking forward to the new album in june.]
the Reigning Sound - "Reptile Style" [from time bomb high school which is, really, just a tremendous rock and roll album. get your ears on it, please.]
Sun Kil Moon - "Sunshine in Chicago" [from among the leaves which will be out soon. love the lyrics in this song. takes knowing kozelek's history a bit, but it makes it worth it.]
the Church - "Reptile" [from starfish. yes, i thought i was being cute by playing this close to "reptile style." don't know how well it worked.]
>
Lotus Plaza - "Out of Touch" [from spooky action at a distance. really liking this record a lot so far. the deerhunter music factory is just overwhelming sometimes.]
Blur - "There's No Other Way" [from leisure. since damon albarn all but dashed my hopes of ever seeing blur again this week, here's some blur to try and make me feel better.]
Graham Coxon - "Advice" [the lead track from a + e, his new solo record. back to back with the blur, i like it since, you know, he plays on both.]
Field Report - "I Am Not Waiting Anymore" [a demo from our friend chris porterfield who used to be in conrad plymouth, a band i loved quite a bit here on the show. good to hear more. go get the song at aquarium drunkard.]
>
Bear in Heaven - "Idle Heart" [from i love you, it's cool. i'm liking this new record, but it isn't quite grabbing me as much as the last one. we'll see.]
the Dream Syndicate - "That's What You Always Say" [from the days of wine and roses. such a tremendous album and band. that is all. there's a great post over at aquarium drunkard this week about another early dream syndicate song.]
M. Ward - "Primitive Girl" [from a wasteland companion. haven't given a listen to this whole record yet, but i've always been a fan of theirs.]
Lightships - "Two Lines" [from electric cables. this new record from gerard love of teenage fanclub is just superbly gorgeous.]
>
Gentleman Jesse - "Eat Me Alive" [from leaving atlanta. enjoying this rockin' new record from this band.]
Daniel Rossen - "Up On High" [from silent hour / golden mile. a solo EP from this member of grizzly bear. pretty good stuff so far.]
Chromatics - "Into the Black" [from kill for love. a cover of the neil young classic that leads off their new record. am i alone in having this remind me of something from this mortal coil?]
Joni Mitchell - "You Turn Me On I'm a Radio" [from for the roses. her first record after blue and i enjoy the country leanings on this song. a bit rare for her.]
Shana Falana - "Tragic" [from in the light EP. shana is going to be coming to greensboro at some point this summer, hopefully, so can't wait to hear this stuff live.]
Chubby Checker - "Goodbye Victoria" [from chequered! aquarium drunkard wrote about this album some time back. it's a wonder to hear, truly.]

That'll do it for this week. Next week will be the last regular radio show podcast until August, so stay tuned for more details about how the podcast will be evolving this summer. I will most likely take the rest of April off after next week, but will be back in early May with the summer version of the podcast. Until next week, and our big send-off, take care.

The guitar in "April Fool" sounds Nels Cline-ish to me.

Love love love that Sun Kil Moon track.

Great finish with Chubby Checker too.

Nice blog work. I came across your blog while “blog surfing” using the Next Blog button on the Nav Bar located at the top of my blogger.com site. I frequently just travel around looking for other blogs which exist on the Internet, and the various, creative ways in which people express themselves. Thanks for sharing.
