J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 17th April 2013

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Another solid show this week. Next week I'll have Ryan Snyder from YES Weekly stopping by for the Indie/Rock Roundtable, so good stuff to come next week as well. We'll be looking at a new album from the Veils as well as another album that we haven't selected yet. Always a treat to have Ryan with us to talk music, so I'm greatly looking forward to it.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 17th April 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Born Ruffians - "6-5000" [from their latest, birthmarks. i dig this song a good bit just like last week's, though not sure how i feel about the whole thing.]
Kula Shaker - "Hey Dude" [from K. so kula shaker actually put out a new record a few years ago, but i have no idea what it was like. anyone catch it?]
the Replacements - "I'm Not Sayin'" [from the innaugural entry in the songs for slim series. this is not finally available for purchase on red vinyl, so those of you waiting for your chance to own a physical copy of this, get on it.]
Girls - "Lust for Life" [by request from their debut album album. hadn't thought about this first girls album in awhile, but i did like both of their records quite a bit.]
>
Edwyn Collins - "31 Years" [from his latest, understated. a good description for most of collins' career, unfortunately. great songwriter.]
Ryan Adams - "Firecracker" [from gold. i still think this is just a bang-up pop song. probably my favorite from this album.]
Bleeding Rainbow - "Waking Dream" [from the excellent yeah right from earlier this year. hate that i missed them in chapel hill, but hopefully i'll catch them at some point.]
Birds of Avalon - "Xarardheere" [from 2011's self-titled record. they'll be playing this saturday at krankies along with greensboro's own the piedmontsmen, so ought to be a great show.]
>
Kurt Vile - "KV Crimes" [from the new album wakin on a pretty daze. pretty excellent record, i'd say.]
R.E.M. - "Disturbance at the Heron House" [from document. the album that followed this one, green, is getting a reissue later this year with a bonus disc full of tracks from a greensboro concert. also, on record store day tomorrow, some additional songs from that show are being released on a live in greensboro EP. awesome stuff for fans of rem and greensboro.]
Art Brut - "Catch" [from the second disc of the new top of the pops best-of collection. this is a cover of the cure classic song. i enjoy eddie argos' talk-singing on this one.]
P.O.S. - "Fuck Your Stuff" [from we don't even live here. i guess i'll chill on the doomtree stuff for awhile considering dessa has a new album dropping next month and i'll have that on the show for sure.]
>
Caitlin Rose - "I Was Cruel" [from the stand-in, just an excellent record and one of my favorites of this year, easily.]
Mel McDaniel - "Big Ole Brew" [by request. a big ole brew and little ole you. i have a big soft spot for mel mcdaniel, so good request.]
Alessi's Ark - "The Rain" [from their forthcoming album the still life. i played some tracks off their last album, so good to hear back from them.]
Michael Penn - "All That That Implies" [from resigned which i almost wanted to name my favorite album of 2012 if, you know, it wasn't released in 1997.]
>
Thee Oh Sees - "I Come From the Mountain" [from their new album floating coffin. i have to wonder whether the album title is a moby dick reference.]
Tom Waits - "Cold Cold Ground" [from franks wild years. this was the first tom waits song i ever heard and i've been a devoted fan since.]
Drag Sounds - "Feels So Good" [from feelin it. yeah, i love the spoken word section of this song. awesome greensboro rock and roll.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Independent Thief" [from back to me. this and "summerlong" from this album are among my very favorite kathleen edwards songs. this one, especially, is just immaculately put together.]
>
Marnie Stern - "Noonan" [from the chronicles of marnia. is this about tom noonan?]
the Whigs - "Right Hang on My Heart" [going back to their second album, mission control. love this song and its big, dramatic chorus.]
Implodes - "Bottom of a Well" [from their latest recurring dream. still really digging on this album.]
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - "I'm Your Man" [from blank generation. i'm reading richard hell's autobiography, i dreamed i was a very clean tramp and it's pretty excellent so far.]
>
Josh Ritter - "New Lover" [from the beast in its tracks. can't wait to hopefully catch messr. ritter next month in chapel hill.]
the Stooges - "I Wanna Be Your Dog" [from their self-titled 1969 debut. i don't know what to expect about this new stooges album coming out in a couple of weeks on fat possum, but who knows.]
Ttotals - "Sometimes You Just Are" [from the spectrums of light 7" record released by our friends at twin lakes records, home of a band i loved quite a bit the other year, myty konkeror.]
Mary Lou Lord - "I Figured You Out" [from the martian saints EP, a version of an elliot smith song that smith never formally recorded for an album. pretty lovely song, too. mary lou is good at interpretation.]

That'll do it for this week. Tune in next week for another great episode and the Indie/Rock Roundtable. Until then, take care.
