J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 15th and 29th May 2013

[Welcome to another episode of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Sorry for the delay in posting this episode from the 15th. Also, you'll have a chance to download this week's episode directly from my hosting space, but not through Libsyn or iTunes. You can see the simplified track listing from that show below the run-down of the 15th show.

Next week on the show, Ryan Snyder of YES Weekly will be joining us for the Indie/Rock Roundtable and we'll be talking about new records from Portugal,  The Man and Queens of the Stone Age. In two weeks, we'll be joined in studio by Estrangers whose new album is dropping in early June. Ought to be a fun few weeks here on the show. Now, let's go. Onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 15th May 2013 show and 29th May 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Primal Scream - "Invisible City" [from their new album more light which i have been seriously enjoying a lot since i first got my ears on it. so, bobby gillespie, whattya say? wanna bring the band stateside?]
Caitlin Rose - "Only a Clown" [from the stand-in. this is one of the songs on the record that she co-wrote with gary louris of the jayhawks. it has that nice pop touch that gary was always so good at. but further proof, too, that caitlin is no slack of a songwriter either.]
Nathan Arizona and the New Mexicans - "Let It Out" [from the let it out EP. this is a three-piece from up in burlington, north carolina. pretty great straight ahead rock and roll.]
the Breeders - "Divine Hammer" (BBC Sessions) [from the new LSXX 20th anniversary re-issue of the breeders' last splash. it's  a three CD treasure trove of the remastered album, all the EPs released around the same time, singles and live tracks. just an awesome warm up for seeing the band at hopscotch this year doing the album live.]

[This is where I was joined by Matty Sheets and the Blockheads to talk about their (then) upcoming CD release show and their new album Sea Legs. We played some album tracks and had them play some live stuff as well. Check out links to download the individual live performances below.]

Matty Sheets and the Blockheads - "Slow Driver" [from sea legs. a song matty and the band performed live on the show back in 2010, so you can compare the two.]
Matty Sheets and the Blockheads - "Walking on Shark"/"When You're Gone" [also from sea legs.]
Matty Sheets and the Blockheads - "You're Not Dead" (live) [performed live in the studio. click here to download.]
Matty Sheets and the Blockheads - "Up to Snuff" (live) [performed live in the studio. click here to download.]
>
Gun Outfit - "Flyin' Low Maria" [from hard coming down. pretty excellent song from a pretty solid record. we'll hear more.]
Haley Bonar - "Raggedy Man" [from 2011's golder. kind of sorry i missed out on this record in its original release time. really digging it as i always have haley's music.]
the Radio Reds - "Keep Myself Together" [from their forthcoming album southern belle. great greensboro rock and roll. we'll hear more.]
Paul Westerberg - "Runaway Wind" [from 14 songs. i had this stuck in my head all that week, so there you go.]
>
the Handsome Family - "Octopus" [from wilderness. really awesome to hear from the handsome family again. love brett and rennie sparks quite a bit.]
the Church - "Unified Field" [from uninvited, like the clouds. one of my absolute favorite late-period church albums from back on 2006. really worth hunting down if you're a fan of the band.]
Wild Nothing - "The Body in Rainfall" [from empty estate EP. really like wild nothing, so good to hear even more new stuff from them this year.]
Johnny Darrell - "Why You Been Gone So Long" [i originally heard this through an oxford american annual music compilation, and i still love darrell's version of this song the best. just a great, great slice of rock and roll.]
>
Vampire Weekend - "Diane Young" [from the new album modern vampires of the city. really liking their new album quite a bit. this band has completely turned me around on them from their first record to this one.]
Jews and Catholics - "Who Are We Think We Are" [the title track from their last album. the winston-salem band has a new album coming out later this year and i'm very excited. hopefully we'll have them back up on the show again.]
Snowden - "So Red" [from their new album no one in control. we'll hear more - really dug this band's first album and when i saw them live.]
the Clash - "English Civil War" [from give 'em enough rope which is a very underrated album in the clash oeuvre, in my opinion, but yeah.]
Citified - "Dutiful Scout" [from their most recent EP absence. citified's former bass player, d.m. franklin kane, who also wrote this song, was getting married the coming weekend, so i wanted to send a shoutout to a good friend and a great musician. congrats, frank.]

Now, below, check out the bonus episode song list and don't forget to download it from up at the top. Next week, we'll have Ryan Snyder on from YES Weekly to do the Indie/Rock Roundtable. Until then, take care.
