J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 1st May 2013

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. The podcasts are going to go up a little later than usual for a few weeks as I get my podhosting situation properly sorted, so expect Monday updates for at least the next couple of weeks.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 1st May 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Deerhunter - "Pensacola" [from monomania. well, i'm already liking this new deerhunter more than previous ones. but that shows a bit about what kind of music i like. we'll hear more.]
New York Dolls - "Trash" [from their self-titled debut. it's the new york dolls. you know you love it.]
Pretty & Nice - "Q_Q" [from golden rules for golden people. hadn't heard this band before, but i like what i've heard so far.]
Sleater-Kinney - "Male Model" [from all hands on the bad one. "kick it out, can you show me your riffs" remains one of my favorite sing-along lines of all time.]
>
Savages - "Swift" [from silence yourself. well, pitchfork gave this an 8.6 and they are not wrong. this is a tremendous album and we'll be hearing a lot more.]
the Happy Mondays - "Step On" [from pills 'n' thrills and bellyaches. i still want to start a monthly indie dance night here in greensboro. because this is the type of stuff i would regularly play. anyone with me?]
Anika - "In the City" [from the anika EP EP. seems redundant, i know, but the actual title is anika EP. i played some anika on the show a year or so ago. glad to hear more.]
Wipers - "When It's Over" [from youth of america. the box set of the first three wipers albums for about $20 is one of the best deals you will ever have in music. so, so good.]
>
No Joy - "Prodigy" [from wait to pleasure. not bad and we'll hear more.]
Haley Bonar - "Candy Machine Gun" [from golder. i have been a long time fan of haley bonar (here's proof from 2008) ever since her the size of planets album in 2002. i had missed this record from 2011 though and a shame i did. really good.]
Night Beds - "My Kind of Woman" [from the aquarium drunkard lagniappe sessions. this is a cover of a mac demarco song from his 2 album. and free to download. check it out.]
Sisters of Mercy - "Lucretia My Reflection" [by request from 1987's floodland.]
>
Akron/Family - "Sand Time" [from their new album sub verses. more good music from a consistently great band.]
Shana Falana - "Tragic" [from the in the light EP. one of my favorites from last year. she was supposed to maybe come to greensboro at some point  last year. maybe still?]
Guided by Voices - "Islands (She Talks in Rainbows)" [from english little league. dig this song quite a bit. tobin sprout is batting 1.000 it seems on these reunion records.]
Squirrel Nut Zippers - "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" [from perennial favorites. my favorite zippers record and a song that is forever awesome, too.]
