J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 10th July 2013

[Welcome to another episode of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Sorry for the delay on this one, but I was doing some traveling last weekend and decided to just hold off on uploading. Also, I did not record this week's actual broadcast, but if you check my Twitter account, you can go back and find the artists played this week.

A special thanks to the people who have continued to donate to the podcast. My goal for all this is to raise enough to support the podcast for the next year or further and so far we're about a fifth of the way there. If you haven't already read the details, go to this post and read up. There are gifts for different levels of donations and you'll help keep this podcast - which has been self-funded and operated for nearly 7 years - fully up and running.

Now, while the going's good, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 10th July 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Oblivians - "Call the Police" [from desperation. really digging this new album from these guys. i'll admit to not knowing them until now, but i do love the reigning sound, so here's to this.]
Oakley Hall - "Confidence Man" [from gypsum string. the position of 'second song' each week usually goes to some classic cut that just rocks. and this song has been an official one of those that routinely shows up in this slow over the years. i miss you oakley hall. wherefore art thou?]
Hunx and His Punx - "Born Blonde" [from street punk. i kind of hate the name of this band, but i am enjoying this song. we'll hear more.]
Grandpaboy/Paul Westerberg - "Silent Film Star" [from mono. still one of my absolute favorites from westerberg and i love how it shares a lyrical theme with "got you down" from the stereo half of this album pairing.]
>
Gun Outfit - "Flyin' Low Maria" [from hard comin' down. enjoying this song. need to check out more of the album.]
Wilco - "I Got  You (At the End of the Century)" [from being there. one of my favorites from my favorite wilco album. hey, in a few years, maybe the band can do a 20th anniversary touring of this?]
Robert Pollard - "Flash Gordon Style" [from honey locust honky tonk. i'm really digging this album so far. might also be up there with one of my favorite pollard solo joints of the past ten years, robert pollard is off to business which was really solid.]
the Afghan Whigs - "John the Baptist" [from 1965. this album gets a lot of credit - and i think up through the track after this one on the album, it's killer. it ends kind of weakly, but that's my opinion. still love these guys.]
>
Austra - "Forgive Me" [from olympia. been digging the singles off of this record. we'll probably hear more.]
Tom Waits - "16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought-Six" [from swordfishtrombones. my favorite waits record after bone machine.]
Speedy Ortiz - "Tiger Tank" [from major arcana. uh, top 25 bound? maybe. we'll see how it holds up, but right now this album is hitting my nostalgia buttons so hard it's amazing.]
Suburbs - "Rattle My Bones" [from love is the law. only six days left for the great minneapolis band's kickstarter campaign to raise money for their new album. they're pretty close.]
>
the Mantles - "Marbled Birds" [from long enough to leave. really enjoying this record. anyone else into this band?]
Aztec Camera - "Get Outta London" [from stray. this album doesn't come up much - that i've noticed - when discussing aztec camera, but man, i do love it so.]
Deafheaven - "Dream House" [from sunbather. yeah, a nearly ten minute song like this is quite the anomaly on the show, but i thought it was quite pretty.]
Jonny Polonsky - "Love Lovely Love" [from hello my name is jonny. had to follow it with some short, punchy goodness though. so there you go.]
>
Camera Obscura - "William's Heart" [from desire lines. did anyone go see this show last weekend in saxapahaw?]
Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Rings" [from coil. playing tonight in charlotte and tomorrow downtown here in greensboro. might have an interview with the band, too, so keep your fingers crossed.]
Kurt Vile - "KV Crimes" [from wakin' on a pretty daze. how was this show last night for anyone who went?]
Swirlies - "One Light Flashing I Love You" [from cats of the wild vol. 2. and how were swirlies? love this band so much.]
>
Ruby Pins - "Chameleon" [from their self-titled debut. really like this so far - from the drummer of grass widow. we'll hear more.]
Kool Keith - "Rockets on the Battlefield" [from black elvis / lost in space. clearly this week's show took a weird bent with my ten minute song and then this. but honestly, this particular kool keith record has long been a weirdo favorite of mine.]
Ashrae Fax - "Ectome" [from static crash. they'll be playing on august 31st at the flatiron here in greensboro, so get excited.]
Hayden - "Middle of July" [from moving careful EP. now that it's officially the middle of july, a very appropriate song.]
>
the Pastels - "Night Time Made Us" [from slow summits. enjoying this first new album from the pastels in a long, long time as well.]
Veronica Falls - "Teenage" [from waiting for something to happen. one of my favorite, favorite singles of this year and it was stuck in my head for pretty much all of that week. so there you go.]

That'll do it for this week. Next week's show should return to regular Friday updates. Until then, take care.
