J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 21st August 2013

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. The show this week was a rarity - it was on my birthday! Won't have another one of those until 2019! I think I was off on the estimate when I said so on the show. Oh, well. Hope you enjoy my birthday bonanza.

I'll be taking next week off again, but I'll be back in two weeks with another visit from our old friend Caleb Caudle and the guys in Greensboro's Roseland as they get set to set out on tour together. Ought to be fun.

Thanks to everyone who donated during the fundraising drive. The donation link is going to go up on the right here on the main page so that you can still donate in the future. Thanks again. It means a lot to get the response that I did from listeners.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 21st August 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Superchunk - "Me & You & Jackie Mittoo" [from the new i hate music which just came out this week. it's a really, really good record, y'all. for real. and keep your ears peeled for the awesome bookends i set up this week.]
the Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner" [from their self-titled debut. never get tired of this song. and it's just rock and roll at its finest.]
Queens of the Stone Age - "Smooth Sailin'" [from ...like clockwork. one of my favorite songs from this record.]
the Replacements - "Hayday" [by request. from hootenanny. the 'mats' first show in 22 years is this weekend in toronto. anyone up that way? i need reports!]
>
Grant Hart - "Is the Sky the Limit?" [from the excellent new the argument. looking forward to eventually seeing that grant hart documentary also.]
Television - "Friction" [from marquee moon. yes, clearly, i was loading up the personal favorites for this birthday show. what can I say?]
Ty Segall - "Sweet C.C." [from sleeper, his latest. dig the tyrannosaurus rex-era t. rex sound to this song. we'll hear more.]
Drive-by Truckers - "Do It Yourself" [from decoration day. it's the bridge that makes this song - otherwise it's almost a little too run-of-the-mill truckers. but that bridge. lord, it saves the day.]
>
Jackson Scott - "Evie" [from the excellent new melbourne. more great north carolina music. i'm hoping all this political turmoil means a continuation of this wonderful uptick in great new NC music.]
Randy Newman - "Political Science" [from sail away. this was the first randy newman song that i really heard in the sense that i really paid attention to it. and it was all downhill from there. so good.]
Chastity Belt - "Black Sail" [from no regerts. yes, the misspelling is intentional. i'm not sure what i think of this record yet, but we will probably be hearing some more.]
Son Volt - "Right on Through" [from wide swing tremolo. and i will go to bat for this record any day. i think it's an excellent album even if it hardly ever gets mentioned in talks about son volt as a band.]
>
Humanbeast - "Nightgown" [from their latest, venus ejaculates into the banquet. we might hear more of this. i'm intrigued, certainly.]
Kathleen Edwards - "Somewhere Else" [from the amazing back to me which has several of my favorite edwards songs of all time on it.]
Travis - "On My Wall" [from their new album where you stand. admit it. you like this song. i do, too. i had kind of given up on travis. good to hear them in good form on this song at least.]
Vic Chesnutt - "Degenerate" [from about to choke. i think i played this song not too long ago on the show, but it's vic chesnutt, so there are so many riches and so many good songs. it's hard not to repeat sometimes when they're this amazing.]
>
Eros and the Eschaton - "Carry the Water" [from the excellent new home address for civil war. if you didn't catch my interview with them last week, then you should fix that. they'll be at the green bean here in greensboro tonight, august 23rd.]
Ashrae Fax - "Pointbreak" [from static crash. they'll be at the flat iron in greensboro on saturday, august 31st.]
No Age - "An Impression" [from their latest, an object. really digging this record so far. they'll be at pinhook in durham along with spider bags on tuesday, september 3rd.]
Lucinda Williams - "Get Right With God" [from essence. she'll be at the haw river ballroom in saxapahaw on wednesday, september 18th playing her self-titled record in its entirety.]
>
Diarrhea Planet - "Field of Dreams" [from i'm rich beyond your wildest dreams. welcome to a short list of bands whose music i really dig but whose name i loathe, diarrhea planet.]
Wilco - "I'm Always In Love" [from summerteeth. always love this song. plus even though nels cline wasn't in the band yet, it was a good intro to the next song.]
Mark Kozelek & Desertshore - "Livingstone Bramble" [from their new self-titled album. love the little nels cline lyrical and audio dig in the song. i think it's clearly a pretty funny joke. wonder if he really hates nels cline or just went for the rhyme and the auditory humor?]
John Prine - "Lake Marie" [by request from jeremy on twitter. from lost dogs and mixed blessings. this was the first john prine song i ever really heard and it was amazing. here's that performance that i saw from the sadly defunct sessions at west 54th.]
>
Dog Party - "Best Friend" [from lost control. interesting stuff. we'll probably hear some more at some point. good, summertime rock.]
Howe Gelb - "The 3 Deaths of Lucky" [from the coincidentalist, the new album from the giant sand frontman. always love hearing new music from howe.]
the Replacements - "I Hate Music" [from sorry ma forgot to take out the trash. a good bookend with the superchunk song, see? exactly. you thought i'd forgotten, i bet.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be skipping next week as I'll be elsewhere, but I'll be back in two weeks with Caleb Caudle and the guys in Roseland stopping in for a visit, plus a Hopscotch preview, so until then, take care.
