J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 13th November 2013

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Tonight was a fun show filled some great music - and a couple of segue flubs. With the way that I plan out the show (or rather, don't plan out the show), it's almost like a live performance of DJing each week. So occasionally I'm pretty underwhelmed by segues. But the next to last set of the evening is one of the best I've put together in awhile, I think. So there you have it. Enjoy.

The end of the year is coming soon, so if you have some suggestions about best albums of the year, feel free to leave them in the comments. I always look forward to hearing what you guys think about the music of the year as well.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 13th November 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Diarrhea Planet - "White Girls (Student of the Blues, Pt. 1)" [from i'm rich beyond your wildest dreams. these guys were here in greensboro at empire books last week and put on a hell of a show from what i heard.]
Sleater-Kinney - "Dig Me Out" [the title track from their third album. this song kind of blew my mind back in the day - this whole album did.]
Tennis - "Cured of Youth" [from the new small sound EP. we might hear more. interesting stuff.]
the Lemonheads - "Into Your Arms" [from come on feel the lemonheads. the same songwriter who wrote this also wrote "the outdoor type" from car button cloth, two of my absolute favorite lemonheads songs.]
>
Polica - "I Need $" [from shulamith. another new track from the minneapolis band's new album.]
Matthew Sweet - "Dead Smile" [from kimi ga suki * raifu. this week's brain exorcism. not sure why this got stuck in my head, but it did.]
Jeff Tweedy - "The Ballad of the Opening Band" [from songs for slim: rockin' here tonight. one of my favorite songs from the new collection of all of the songs for slim singles. this is one of my favorite dunlap songs in general.]
Slim Dunlap - "Partners in Crime" [from the old new me. this is up there as well - just love the "before they know we're gone / we're halfway to oregon" line.]
>
No Joy - "Last Boss" [from the pastel and pass out EP. an EP to follow their LP from earlier this year.]
the Emergency - "Lie Detector" [from doo lang doo lang. just good music. miss these guys.]
the Ends - "Snowblower" [from guilty sunrise. more new good music from burlington, north carolina. check out the video for the song here.]
Blackalicious - "It's Going Down" [from blazing arrow. got a call about this one - and it's true, you just don't hear enough blackalicious on the radio. well, you never did, unfortunately, but even more so now.]
>
Swearin' - "Watered Down" [from surfing strange. digging this record a good little bit so far.]
Placebo - "Nancy Boy" [from their self-titled debut. interesting to think how much placebo's sound has developed over the years. still love those first two albums an awful lot though.]
Yamantaka // Sonic Titan - "Hall of Mirrors" [from uzu. i'm really getting into this record a lot so far.]
Hayden - "Two Doors" [from the closer i get. i've always loved this song, but i think it's hard to tell whether it's mildly sweet and longing or stalkerish and weird.]
>
Blood Orange - "You're Not Good Enough" [from cupid deluxe. going to have to do some more listening to this but i like it so far.]
Destroyer - "European Oils" [from destroyer's rubies. on my short list of my favorite guitar solos in a song ever.]
Travis - "On My Wall" [from where you stand. travis finally is kind of back in my good graces. this sounds like classic travis and that is not a bad thing at all.]
Hammer No More the Fingers - "Fingernails" [from black shark. the closing track from still one of my favorite nc rock records in recent years.]
>
Califone - "Magdalene" [from stitches. haven't heard a lot from this record, but i do love califone. still hate i missed them at hopscotch.]
Geggy Tah - "Don't Close the Door" [from sacred cow. one of the 90's one-hit wonders that are truly forgotten, but this record is actually really quite good. i think.]
Roman Candle - "Small Time" [from debris. our good friends in roman candle have a new album and this song sounds great.]
Pulp - "The Birds in Your Garden" [from we love life. another kind of odd song in terms of lyrically, but it is gorgeous at times. always fun to re-think pop songs.]
>
Bill Callahan - "Small Plane" [from dream river. gorgeous music from his beautiful new record. really love the low-key happiness of this song.]
Ra Ra Riot - "That Much" [from beta love. not a huge fan of ra ra riot, but i like this song a little bit.]
Lazlo Bane - "Overkill" [from 11 transistor. the band that went on, of course, to do the theme song to scrubs had a really fantastic first couple of records. haven't kept up with them since then, but love their version of this men at work classic.]

That'll do it for this week. Tune in next week for more. Until then, take care.
