J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 20th November 2013

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - this is the last sort of regular show of 2013, so enjoy it, folks. I lay out the upcoming schedule on the podcast, but here it is in brief: Nov. 27th - the Annual Thanksgiving-Eve Theme Show; Dec. 4th - Final Roundtable of the year with Ryan Snyder; Dec. 11th - Top Singles of the Year; Dec. 18th - Top 25 Albums of the Year. And then I'm taking the next week off (not doing a show on Christmas - sorry) and then my next show will be New Years Day! So get excited - the end is nigh!

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 20th November 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Future of the Left - "The Male Gaze" [from how to stop your brain in an accident. didn't know the welsh band was sneaking one out this year - there have now officially been more FOTL albums than mclusky ones. i'm still processing that.]
Iggy Pop - "Lust for Life" [from 1977's lust for life. but honestly i played this off my copy of the trainspotting soundtrack. i love that soundtrack like no other.]
Blood Orange - "Uncle ACE" [from cupid deluxe. this record is growing on me quite a bit. maybe year-end bound.]
Sorry About Dresden - "Deadship; Darkship" [from the convenience of indecision. oh, north carolina indie rock, how i love thee.]
>
Throwing Muses - "Sleepwalking 1" [from purgatory/paradise. first new throwing muses record since 2003 and it sounds like a doozy so far. we'll probably hear more.]
the Beastie Boys - "Shake Your Rump" [from paul's boutique. you just can't not love this album from front to back.]
Obits - "Taste the Diff" [from bed & bugs. i have never seen any of the obits/hot snakes/drive like jehu bands. maybe one day.]
Paul Westerberg - "Stain Yer Blood" [originally from the soundtrack to the tv show friends but also on the besterberg: the best of paul westerberg collection. i saw a copy of the soundtrack in a goodwill the other day. probably easier to pick up than the westerberg comp, not counting amazon, that is.]
>
Brad Laner - "Be Gone" [from nearest suns. the medicine member/producer drops another solo record. hometapes does good when they put these out.]
Josh Rouse - "Nothing Gives Me Pleasure" [from under cold blue stars. my love of josh rouse has dimmed over the years as his more recent records have been more meh, but the first five are just pure, lovely pop and i enjoy them very much.]
Toddlers - "Since You've Been Gone" [from their self-titled debut full-length which you can stream for free and then download at your own price. go get it.]
Kraftwerk - "Pocket Calculator" [from computer world. i will never get tired of this song, and if any of you want to buy me a christmas gift and can find one of those musical calculators that were sold on kraftwerk's tour for this album, i will be your friend forever.]
>
Minor Alps - "Wish You Were Upstairs" [from get there. more from the new matthew caws/julianna hatfield team-up. good stuff.]
Teenage Fanclub - "Ain't That Enough" [from songs from northern britain. one of, if not the, loveliest song ever recorded by teenage fanclub. period.]
Lydia Loveless - "All I Know" [from the boy crazy EP. still digging this EP. she kind of reminds me of the same sort of playfully nasty spirit that inhabited the early kathleen edwards stuff.]
Bob Dylan - "Like a Rolling Stone" [from highway 61 revisited. yeah, you will almost certainly never hear this particular song on my show again, but if you haven’t seen the video for it that was released this week, do yourself a favor and do it right now. i’ll wait.]
>
Crocodiles - "Gimme Some Annihilation" [from crimes of passion. this new crocodiles record got some stiff reviews, but it’s got some great singles on it. i’m digging it still.]
Son Volt - "Right on Through" [from wide swing tremolo. the last LP released by the original son volt lineup. i really love this one. it also serves as a bit of a warm-up for jay farrar’s solo releases in general spirit and construction.]
Destroyer - "El Rito" [from the forthcoming five spanish songs EP. so, how is dan bejar’s spanish singing? i have no way to judge.]
Lambchop - "Slipped Dissolved and Loosed" [from OH (ohio). i prefer the original recording of this from kurt wagner’s kurt LP, but this is still one of my absolute favorite lambchop songs.]
>
Sebadoh - "Defend Yr Self" [from defend yourself. thanks in advance for laughing at my sentridoh/folk implosion jokes.]
Scott Walker - "Get Behind Me" [from scott 4. this popped up on my mp3 player on random this week and it made me wish this scott walker was actually governor of wisconsin. man, his voice is something.]
Midlake - "The Old and the Young" [from antiphon. i’m liking this new album a good bit. maybe i actually do like midlake. huh.]
Roadside Graves - "My Son's Home" [the title track from their 2008 album. been awhile since i’ve heard from these guys, but they’ve done some great albums and this is high on that list.]
>
Pity Sex - "Sedated" [from feast of love. this may be one of the sleeper albums sneaking onto my top 25 albums list. it’s quite good.]
Patterson Hood and the Downtown Rumblers - "Hate This Town" [from songs for slim. leave it to patterson hood to sneak a little spoken word homage to slim there at the end, but i’ll say, he does a great song justice.]

That’ll do it for this week. I’ll see you guys next week for my annual Thanksgiving Eve theme show (don’t worry - it’ll still make sense after Thanksgiving), and until then, take care.
