J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 6th November 2013

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. A pretty fun week - a bit influenced by the look-back they're doing at 1993 over at the A.V. Club this week, but still full of great new music. Check it out.

I'm going to be MCing the annual Joe G's Cover Band Explosion this Saturday night, November 9th at the Blind Tiger here in Greensboro. It's a fundraiser for the Merit Pit Bull Foundation and Ginger's Fund, both great organizations that look after pets in good ways. The bands being covered include: Damien Rice, Roky Erickson, X, Elliot Smith, Osker, Hot Water Music and Refused. It's going to be a great time for a great cause. Tickets are $8 at the door and all proceeds go to those funds. The Blind Tiger is always kind enough to donate a night and the door to the annual cover band show, so come show a local venue that you appreciate it.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 6th November 2013 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Upset - "She's Gone" [the title track from their debut. new group featuring former members of best coast, vivian girls and hole. pretty fun stuff.]
Sugar - "Your Favorite Thing" [from file under easy listening. still remember this being used to excellent affect in the skit on the state where michael ian black sets his toothbrush free to see if it will come back to him.]
Swearin' - "Dust in the Gold Sack" [by request from their new album surfing strange. really digging this, so we'll hear more.]
Outkast - "American Dreams" [from stankonia. hard to believe it's been thirteen years since this album, but i used to blast this song weekly for awhile on the show. such good stuff.]
>
Midlake - "Antiphon" [the title track from their latest. i haven't listened to midlake much since the trials of van occupanther, so i'm a bit out of it. but when i heard their singer left and the new record sounded more like that one, i was in. i like this.]
Fugazi - "Smallpox Champion" [from in on the kill taker. i'm too much of a sucker for this album in general. so good.]
M.I.A. - "Only 1 U" [from matangi, her long in the works fourth album. i'm digging this so far. that was the most milquetoast interview with her on morning edition with david green on NPR the other morning though. sheesh. well, actually, that was david green's fault. "a lot of people describe you as 'provocative.' is that a fair label?" is one of the worst questions i've ever heard in a music interview. worth a listen still.]
the Tragically Hip - "Gift Shop" (live) [from the live between us live album. i'm not always a huge fan of live records, but i love this album something fierce.]
>
Minor Alps - "I Don't Know What to Do With My Hands" [from their debut album get there. really enjoying this record from matthew caws and juliana hatfield. good to hear her doing things i really dig again.]
the Ramones - "Needles and Pins" [from road to ruin. oh, you know this song. and if you don't, well, now you do.]
Matt Kivel - "Tetro" [from his new album double exposure. beautiful low-key stuff. we might hear more. or i might just curl up and listen to it.]
Rickie Lee Jones - "It Takes You There" [from the evening of my best day. so i'll be honest - prior to that show the other week, i hadn't really listened to modern rickie lee jones music. but she opened with this song the other night and i was hooked. and the album it's from is pretty excellent as well.]
>
Steve Gunn - "Water Wheel" [from time off. good stuff from an album i missed earlier this year.]
Jim White - "Chase the Dark Away" [from where it hits you. my number two album of last year - sheesh, this year has been a long one in some ways, I definitely thought this record came out in 2011 the other night on the show. you can hear me say so on the podcast.]
the Beta Band - "Dry the Rain" [from the three EPs. but also from the new the regal years six-CD box set that compiles the band's entire output. still a song i associate with a great movie.]
Steve Earle - "I Still Carry You Around" [from el corazón. he has del mccrory and his band on this track. just a great song.]
>
CHVRCHES - "We Sink" [from the bones of what you believe. playing at the orange peel in asheville on saturday, november 30th.]
Frank Turner - "Recovery" [from tape deck heart. playing at amos south end in charlotte on friday, november 15th and at the orange peel in asheville on monday, november 18th.]
Roseland - "Nightlife" [from their self-titled debut. played last night at the evening muse in charlotte.]
Elliot Smith - "Roman Candle" [the title track from his first solo record. playing (not actually him) this saturday at joe g's cover band explosion at the blind tiger here in greensboro.]
>
Lydia Loveless - "Boy Crazy" [the title track from her new EP. you can stream it in its entirety here. good stuff and we'll hear more.]
Goo Goo Dolls - "We Are the Normal" [from superstar car wash. from their 1993 album - a song co-written with paul westerberg. my soft spot for the goo goo dolls (well, everything up through dizzy up the girl at least) grows every day it seems. sheesh.]
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - "Triumph of Will" [from his new self-titled album. more good low-key billy.]
Pavement - "Kennel District" [from wowee zowee. one of my absolute favorite songs of all time.]
Vic Chesnutt - "Chinaberry Tree" [from at the cut. got in my head the other day and, well, here it is.]
Lou Reed - "Vicious" [from transformer. the one song i had picked out that i couldn't squeeze in last week for the tribute, so that's for you, lou.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back with more brand new and classic music next week. Until then, take care.
