J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 28th May 2014

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. This week's episode is pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. Lots of good new and classic stuff.

Next week, Ryan Snyder from YES Weekly will be joining us for the Indie/Rock Roundtable. We'll be discussing new albums from Parquet Courts and Yonatan Gat. Ought to be a good time.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 28th May 2014 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Parquet Courts - "Black and White" [from their forthcoming album sunbathing animal which will be out next week. we'll talk more about it on next week's show.]
Temples - "Shelter Song" [from sun structures. one of my favorite records of this year so far.]
Haunted Hearts - "House of Lords" [from initiation, the new album from the band featuring dum dum girls' dee dee and crocodiles' brandon welchez. this is the married couple's new project together and it sounds pretty good. we'll hear more.]
Beastie Boys - "Sure Shot" [from ill communication which celebrated its 20th anniversary last saturday. a pretty important record in terms of the pop culture as i was growing up, no doubt.]
>
Sharon Van Etten - "Our Love" [from her new album are we there. take a loook at my review of the album over at aquarium drunkard.]
Midnight Oil - "Kosciusko" [from red sails in the sunset. was pretty stoked to find a copy of this album on vinyl a few weeks ago. love midnight oil.]
Sturgill Simpson - "Living the Dream" [from metamodern sounds in country music which, frankly, is in my top ten albums of this year, unquestionably.]
Steely Dan - "Barrytown" [from pretzel logic. i've been reading the three novels that compose roddy doyle's barrytown triology and this song is in my head each and every time i look at the cover.]
>
Echo and the Bunnymen - "Constantinople" [echo and company are back with their new album meteorites and this is a pretty solid song. we'll probably hear more.]
Jews and Catholics - "Bastards" [from last year's civilized. great north carolina band. they'll be at new york pizza here in greensboro on saturday, june 14th. go see them.]
the Roots - "Black Rock" [from the new album ..and then you shoot your cousin. still figuring out how i feel about the album as a whole, but this is a stand-out for sure.]
Public Image Ltd. - "Poptones" [from second edition. i'm sure i run some listeners off every time i play PiL, but honestly, that's kind of fun. i love this record.]
>
La Sera - "Running Wild" [from her new album hour of the dawn. i dig this song quite a bit, so we'll be hearing more.]
Felt - "Rain of Crystal Spires" [from forever breathes the lonely word. i haven't explored felt beyond this record, really. any recommendations from people?]
Emma Ruth Rundle - "Shadows of My Name" [from some heavy ocean. this is a gorgeous song, people. we'll be hearing more of her, for sure.]
Nanci Griffith - "Lookin' For the Time (Workin' Girl)" [from last of the true believers. i also love the version from her one fair summer evening album which is mis-identified on the broadcast. my bad.]
>
Popstrangers - "Country Kills" [from their sophomore album fortuna. new zealand band that just moved to london to do this album. we'll hear more.]
Lambchop - "Beyond Belief" [their cover of the elvis costello classic. this is from the beyond nashville compilation and also the loose: new sounds from the old west - volume two compilation. great cover.]
Herzog - "Mad Men" [from their album boys. interesting uptempo rock. not sure i can say much more.]
Evan Dando - "Won't You Sometimes Think of Me" [a cover of the hank williams classic from the loose: new sounds from the old west - volume 3 compilation.]
>
Jolie Holland - "First Sign of Spring" [from her new album wine dark sea which is, honestly, really, really good. we'll be hearing more.]
Noahjohn - "First Communion" [this is also from the third volume of the loose series mentioned earlier. this is a more stripped down, demo-y version of the song that would end up on noahjohn's last album water hymns. and if you don't know that album, well, go read what i had to say about it.]
First Aid Kit - "My Silver Lining" [from their forthcoming album. we'll be hearing a lot more off of this album, i get the feeling.]
the Supersuckers - "Must've Been High" [the title track from their 1997 album. a band that seems to get lost at times, but such a good band.]
>
Young Widows - "Gift of Failure" [from their new album easy pain which is a pretty raucous record at times. we might hear more.]
Joni Mitchell - "Amelia" [from hejira, one of her great albums that people don't talk about as much as the others. another album i picked up on vinyl pretty cheaply recently.]
D.M. Franklin Kane - "The Mind of God" [from the hard truth. love this greensboro music, man. and this song especially.]
Eliza Shaddad - "Waters" [the title track from her forthcoming EP which you can order or listen to more of here.]
Blur - "This is a Low" [from parklife, one of the many, many great albums that turn 20 years old this year. there you go.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next week with Ryan Snyder for the Indie/Rock Roundtable plus more great new and classic music. Until then, take care.
