J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 7th May 2014

[Welcome to another edition of J's Indie/Rock Mayhem. Well, it looks like I will be here next week after all, so no need to fret. The concert I was going to see has been canceled, so I'll be in the driver's seat for next week's fun. However, I will be missing on the 21st, so you know, be prepared for that. We're hitting a great stretch of releases lately and I feel like the shows are going to be awesome in the coming weeks though.

Now, onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 7th May 2014 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
the Afghan Whigs - "Algiers" [from their latest, do to the beast. i'm a big fan of this song - and of this album. hope i get to see them live at some point. here's the band doing "matamoros" on later...with jools holland as well.]
Adam Daniel - "Her Shake" [from blue pop. adam daniel, if you're out there, i just want you to know how great this song is.]
tUnE-yArDs - "Real Thing" [from the new album nikki nack. it's growing on me. this band is something else entirely.]
Calexico / Iron and Wine - "A History of Lovers" [i had not thought about this collaborative EP in quite some time called in the reins. there are some great moments on it.]
>
First Aid Kit - "Cedar Lane" [from their forthcoming album stay gold. excited to see them at the cat's cradle on friday, june 13th as well.]
Gene Clark - "Elevator Operator" [from gene clark with the gosdin brothers, his first solo album after his initial departure from the byrds. a great, great record.]
Cheap Girls - "Knock Me Over" [from their forthcoming album famous graves. we'll be hearing more as this stuff sounds quite good.]
the Ramones - "Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio?" [from 1980's end of the century. i don't play the ramones on the show often, but this song was a good fit.]
>
Wovenhand - "The Refractory" [from their latest refractory obdurate. i'm glad to hear new music from david eugene edwards again. i guess i fell off of the wovenhand wagon for awhile - not sure what was going on. but glad i caught this new one.]
the Rain Parade - "This Can't Be Today" [from emergency third rail power trip. oh, paisley underground. how i love thee.]
Soft Peaks - "Marty" [from their self-titled EP that is up on their bandcamp page. great power-pop from former greensboro-ites.]
Jurassic 5 - "L.A.U.S.D." [from quality control. seriously one of my favorite jurassic 5 songs of all time.]
>
Lykke Li - "No Rest for the Wicked" [from her new album i never learn. interesting stuff - i haven't been on top of her work so far, so this is new to me. we'll hear more. someone correct me if i just completely slaughtered her name pronunciation after slaving so hard over the wikipedia phonetic key.]
Swirlies - "Bell" [from 1993's blonder tongue audio baton. seriously one of the best 90s albums in american indie-rock. period.]
See Gulls - "You Can't See Me" [more new music from raleigh's see gulls. last week and this week's songs are up on soundcloud so check 'em out.]
Rain - "All I Want" [from their 1991 debut a taste of.... the band shared some members with the eventual oasis, so you get an idea of what kind of early 90s brit-rock we're talking about here.]
>
Clear Plastic Masks - "Baby Come On" [from being there. we'll definitely hear more - they're in carborro at the cat's cradle back room this sunday, may 11th.]
Sylvan Esso - "Play It Right" [from their new self-titled album. they'll be at the cat's cradle tonight, friday, may 9th, but it is sold out.]
North Elementary - "Eventually Everything Connects" [from their new album honcho poncho (the title of which i may have gotten backwards on the podcast. oops.) they'll be having their CD release show in raleigh at king's on friday, may 16th.]
Angel Olsen - "Hi-Five" [from the tremendous burn your fire for no witness. she'll be at the cat's cradle on friday, may 16th and at the grey eagle in asheville on saturday, may 17th.]
>
the Pains of Being Pure at Heart - "Simple and Sure" [from their forthcoming album days of abandon. good to hear from them again.]
the Replacements - "Nowhere is My Home" [from the boink! EP and also from the tim reissue the other year. a great, great song.]
Wussy - "North Sea Girls" [from their new album attica! i like this song quite a bit, so we'll hear more.]
Ex Hex - "Hot and Cold" [from the "hot and cold" 7" from earlier this year. i hope to hear more. a lot of promise in this song. then again it is mary timony. has to be awesome.]
>
Sturgill Simpson - "Long White Line" [from his new album metamodern sounds in country music. we'll be hearing a lot more of this because...well, listen to it? man it's good.]
Haley Bonar - "Car Wreck" [from ...the size of planets. haley has a new album coming out shortly, so hopefully we'll be hearing more of that.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next week with more great new and classic music. Until then, take care.
