J's Indie/Rock Mayhem - 27th August 2014

[This is a story about a blogger and long-time podcaster and radio DJ who got a new job and fell off of knowing how to make time for his blog each week. Thus, the long radio silence. Shows have still been happening weekly, but they haven't been making the transition to the podcast realm, unfortunately. But clearly, because you're reading this, that changes now and hopefully gets back to normal.

Durham's Horizontal Hold was kind enough to stop in this week and chat. They have an excellent new EP and are playing a show this Friday, August 29th with Jews and Catholics and the Kneads at the Garage in Winston-Salem. Come on out if you're in the area and want to see a guaranteed good rock show.

Now, let's cut to the chase. Onward.]

J's Indie/Rock Podcast: 27th August 2014 show

Theme Song - Peaches - "Rock Show"
>
Ty Segall - "Feel" [from his latest, manipulations which has some amazing songs on it, to be sure. we'll be hearing more.]
Temples - "Shelter Song" [from sun structures. this song, and this album, hasn't gotten old for me yet this year. really good stuff.]
Wand - "Flying Golem" [from their new album ganglion reef. i dig this song a good bit, so we'll hear more.]
the Replacements - "Sixteen Blue" [by request, from let it be. fellow DJ frank's youngest turned 16 on wednesday, so he asked me to play this one. very appropriate.]

[Here's where Kim and Dave from Horizontal Hold joined me. We talked about a lot of things including both of their pedigrees from North Carolina bands and their new EP, This is Not a Living. Check out the podcast for more music and some good conversation.]

Horizontal Hold - "All In a Day's Work" [from this is not a living.]
Horizontal Hold - "Powder White" [from this is not a living.]
>
Horizontal Hold - "Amazing Larry" [from this is not a living.]
Jews and Catholics - "Civilized" [the title track from last year's album. they'll be playing at the garage as part of the show with horizontal hold on friday.]
the Kneads - "Frames" (live on WXDU) [a live track from their bandcamp page. the other band playing friday at the garage. greensboro rock and roll.]
the Breeders - "Invisible Man" [from last splash. since we talked about the breeders, i thought i'd throw this in. great song.]
>
the New Pornographers - "Fantasy Fools" [from the new album brill bruisers. i love the idea of a bunch of pop-song toughs that the album implies.]
Teenage Fanclub - "When I Still Have Thee" [from 2010's shadows. i guess we're due for a new teenage fanclub album next year. they're on a 5 year cycle nowadays it seems. here's hoping i'm right.]
Actual Water - "647-445-1141 (Call 4 Fun)" [from their new album call 4 fun. really digging these guys.]
Summer Cannibals - "The Hand" [from last year's really excellent no makeup.]
>
Literature - "Tie-Dye (Your Life)" [from their new album chorus. i don't get band names like this - though it does remind me of the idea i saw for naming a band "algebra II."]
FKA Twigs - "Pendulum" [from the minimalist-titled LP1. i'm really digging this album. it's some pretty amazing pop music, to be sure.]
Operators - "True" [from the similarly titled EP1. dan boeckner is a member of handsome furs and wolf mother and divine fits and here he takes the helm of a band fully for the first time. good results.]
Q and Not U - "So Many Animal Calls" [from different damage. let me tell you, yet again, how amazing i think this album is. i miss this band. and i think it holds up so well though it's 12 years old now.]
>
Connections - "Aylia" [from into sixes. pretty sharp little song. we'll hear more.]
the Rosebuds - "Esse Quam Videri" [from sand + silence. my favorite named song on the album - north carolina, represent.]
Twin Peaks - "Strawberry Smoothie" [from their new album wild onion. getting great reviews. autumn tone is one a roll as a farm league of late.]
Social Distortion - "Let It Be Me" [from their self-titled album. such great stuff.]

That'll do it for this week. I'll be back next week with a regular show and more great new and classic music. Until then, take care.
